John is a very nice guy and his work is impeccable. At times I felt bad because I thought I was being too demanding about the specifications of the job but John met every demand of me and my wife. I hired John to put up a textured stone tile back splash for me. Originally I bought a tile off Amazon. John put up about half of the tile which took him a decent bit of time because he had to cut the tile and ensure that it looked good. After looking at it, I was not satisfied with the look. It was not because of his work but because of the quality of tile, which was poor. John explained to me that the tile was not good. He could have took advantage of me, finished the job, and went on with his day. Instead he gave me his honest opinion, took down the tile and cleaned off the wall free of charge (even though it was his time that was wasted because of my mistake in buying cheap tile), and he gave me a GREAT recommendation of who to purchase tile from. I went that same day to where he recommended and we quickly rescheduled the job. On the day of the rescheduled job, we had yet another set back. The new source of tile sent me some damaged pieces and I did not have enough tile to complete the job. Again John worked with me and came the next day after I got extra pieces to complete the job. John was extremely understanding and very helpful throughout the entire process. Any home improvement job from hereon out that I have I will absolutely call John first AND I will refer all of my family and friends to him. If you value honesty, professionalism, attention to detail, and expert craftsmanship John is without doubt the person to handle any job you need!

Exceeded expectations. R&D's professional, courteous and extremely capable team painted ALL of the interior of my home, refinished my front door and found me someone to fix my stone path. They worked efficiently and with extreme care for my home, managing to complete the work in half the time that others quoted and at the best price. Highly recommend R&D.

Clifton was very easy to work with, from start to finish. I appreciated all the time he put into discussing the plans with me ahead of time, and that he delivered as promised and within budget and schedule. For this project, he found a solution to install French doors in an irregularly shaped doorway--More than one friend said the end result looked classy. In addition, Clifton and his assistants Kylie and Miguel repainted my sad-looking, peeling porches into a glossy, mirror-like shine. Before they'd even finished, a neighbor had already asked for a business card. The entire crew was courteous and left the place neat and tidy. Would recommend for similar work.

KC's Lawn & Landscaping came up with a good landscape design They removed all old shrubs and hauled them away, they purchased and planted new bushes with varying height & color. By far the best landscaping work we have ever had. We hired Dan & Jaime to weed, edge and mulch around our home. It was a large project. The level of customer service was outstanding from my first phone call with Jaime to delivery of the final product. Without our knowing, Dan actually walked into woods near our home and hauled large rocks to make our garden look even more beautiful. I cannot give this company enough praise and look forward to sharing them with family and friends. After this initial job, we decided to hire them for our routine lawn care. We HIGHLY recommend CSJ!

Dave did a really great job replacing rotten window sills as well as painting others and two doorways in our 1762 stone house. Besides the work being done well, it was done on time and for less than his original quote. Dave and his crew were very organized and neat. He did the work in 3 days and each day they cleaned up as if they'd never been there. I work from home and Dave was extremely conscientious about noise and would text/call my cell when he arrived and left each day rather than risk interrupting. We are really pleased with everything.

Jeff has remodeled most of my home. He is a very skilled contractor. His work with tile and stone is the best I've ever seen. Many people remark at the quality of work that was preformed in my remodel. I would use Jeff anytime and plan to again in my next home.

We needed to replace the floor in the upstairs bathroom of our old stone house, (too many years of children splashing all the water out of the tub). Once the old flooring was up and out the complexity of the situation was apparent-the home had been built before indoor plumbing and Andrew was faced with the jigsaw puzzle left by whoever had put in the pipes. We are quite pleased with our new floor- good work- thanks Andrew. I would recommend hiring Wick's Helping Hands.

There was a complete remodel of 2 room add on of my house. Everything was done in a timely fashion, organized and area kept relatively clean. They removed drywall and replaced anything that needed it. Outside they put insulation, vinyl siding and replaced metal roofing. The also removed rear rotted 2 level porch and roof and rebuilt it into a 2 level porch with steps to upper level and to bottom yard with stone area to walk on to. They also cemented and patterned the stone and cement walls. They are knowledgeable in construction, are licensed and insured and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for good work at a good price.

Mr. Beecher is a very nice young man, just getting started in his business. He removed 7 bushes, one of which was a small tree. It took 4 hard tugs with his diesel truck to remove the tree. Step stone pavers were put down, decorative arches were put up next to the neighbors fence and a very crowded flower bed was cleaned out. Everything was mulched. It took 2 days and I am very satisfied with his work. He was punctual, pleasant to work with, paid attention to what I wanted and I would highly recommend him. It was somewhat pricey but considering all of the work that was done, it was indeed a reasonable amount.

John Patterson did several interior home improvement projects for us. He demonstrated superior abilities in the areas if painting, carpentry, and even masonry. One of the more outstanding projects was the flagstone accent wall in our basement. This wall was constructed one stone at a time. It's exquisite design and symmetry is outstanding and brings us a lot of compliments. Mr. Patterson is a committed provider who is punctual and thoroughly invested in his work. Indeed, we would and probably WILL rehire him in the future.

Ray worked on my patio. He does outstanding work with stone. He built my stairs which were very involved as they were curved stairs. He also put in a water line and installed my electrical led lighting. The project overall was very well done. Ray was always prompt and takes the extra time to make sure a job is done right.

I had a great experience with Pristine Services. Andre & Neville were professional, courteous, thorough & took pride in their work. I needed to clear a long garden bed on a slope. I was somehow unable to capture the effect I wanted from this garden. Andre & Neville removed all the stones used for edging, carried the stones to an area underneath the deck where there had been some erosion, removed the plants & the mulch, prepared the soil & sowed the grass seeds. They also removed all garden debris. Their job was neat, clean & professional. I intend to hire them again for other work. Thanks to Thumb Tack for recommending this company. Great service!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
