My Son has an IEP and Michael worked with him to prep for the ACT. We met ahead of time, reviewed my sons strengths and weaknesses and Michael set up a study plan for him. My son enjoyed the study sessions and practiced between meetings, I was impressed how well my son responded, homework is not one of his favorites. I was also given weekly progress updates. My son completed the exam and was comfortable because he was well prepared by Michael, I highly recommend him, he worked well with my son and showed interest in his success.

I would be very happy to provide a reference for Roy. I highly recommend him. My daughter started tutoring with Roy in the 9th grade and continued with him the next two years (10th & 11th grades). When she started she was taking the accelerated Math class and was having some troubles with her teacher's style of teaching. Roy was able to fill in the gaps for her and give her the confidence (and knowledge) to succeed in the class. In the first reporting period after she started tutoring with Roy, she brought her grade up from a B- to a B+. That may not seem like a big jump but she was in a very competitive class and the teacher was a hard grader, so she was thrilled. After 9th grade, she continued to have the same teacher for the next two years and she also made it onto the Math Team (which the same teacher also led). Although she had by now gotten used to her teacher's way of teaching, Roy was extremely helpful in explaining some of the concepts more thoroughly and helping her when she was stuck with homework problems. He also helped her prepare for quizzes and major tests as well as the more complex math problems she had to face when competing on the math team. Roy was always patient and explained things to my daughter in a way she could understand. He also gave her different ways of thinking about solving a problem that she wasn't getting in class. I asked her about the types of math she studied with Roy and it sounds like it ranged from topics in algebra (mass points, bases, etc.), trigonometry, and calculus. He sometimes used proofs to explain concepts to her. I doubt if there would be any math topic that he couldn't teach, however. He also suggested extra things for her to consider or learn and posed more challenging problems - she called them "enrichment problems." He not only was interested in helping her stay on top of her coursework, he was also trying to stretch her abilities. I think this really paid off for her - not only did she continue to do well in class, but she also got a perfect score on the SAT Math II Subject Test. Hope you don't mind the long-winded review, but I wanted to show how important Roy's tutoring was to my daughter's success in math over the last 3 years. We usually met with him once a week during the school year and I believe his help really made a big impact on my daughter's ability. She also progressed from being insecure about her math abilities to feeling confident enough to tutor new math team members. In her words, she appreciated having a low pressure environment to learn math - a place where she wasn't been graded or judged, but just getting the personalized coaching she needed. She hasn't had to see him on a regular basis this year (she's taking AP Calculus) but will be using him to prep before big tests. PS - I should also mention that Roy is a very nice person as well.

Prep scholar is absolutely the best program out there. As a student who always works very hard but lacks the innate intelligence that would get me a top SAT score, I tried almost every program out there before finding prep scholar. I spent countless hours on the college board's own website with their program, and found no progress. I hired a personal tutor to work with, at a very costly rate, and still didn't feel any more prepared for the SAT. I purchased work book after work book until I finally found prep scholar. Prep scholar is amazing because it's flexible, individual, and self paced. A worker bee like me was able to finish my weekly assignments in two days and continue, but a slower worker can simply carry weekly lessons into the next. However, the owner, Allen, is in touch by email making sure you're on track in spending enough time on the site. Prep scholar lessons are also amazing. They feature tips and tricks that are simple, easy to learn, and best of all- they really work! I started with a barely above average score of 1690, but after just 3 weeks with prep scholar I raised my score to a 2020! Prep scholar is amazing, and you're doing yourself or your kid a disservice if you choose not to provide them with this program.

This program is exactly what I would have needed when I took the GMAT. The challenge with the GMAT is its adaptivity to your skill level. Therefore, a traditional prep book from the library or bookstore will inadequately prepare advanced test takers with enough difficult questions to be ready for the test. The customization of this program is perfect for the design of the GMAT. And the guarantee from PrepScholar is pretty impressive. No-brainer for anyone serious about applying to business school!

Nafisat Sanni " We have been greatly pleased with Damie tutoring our 11th grade son in maths. As concerned parents for the overall progress of our child at learning ,Damie was recommended by a reliable test prep service to help with his factorizing and graphing equations problem. Damie's perceptive skill in working through a student's area of strength in order to improve a weakness can't be overemphasized. We saw great improvement in our son's test scores in his maths class. We highly recommend Damie as a tutor for any level of math"

Lisa is one of the best writing tutors that I have ever had. She is smart, kind, and believes in every single one of her students. I first started working with Lisa to prep for the ACT. She always believed in me and encouraged me to keep working towards my goals. After getting through the ACT, Lisa helped me with my college application and supplemental essays. She helped me to get my vision into solidified and ideas. She has a hyper focus on making sure that her students voice is heard. Her respect and confidence in me is what made me believe in myself and my work.

I signed up with Cambridge Tutoring last winter when I was preparing for my GMATs. Working with Karthic saved me a ton of time as he was able to help me break down my studying into more organized sections. I stopped spending hours reading test prep books and instead spent a fraction of that time working through problem sets with him that addressed my individual needs as a student. I'd highly recommend Cambridge Tutoring to anyone that wants to accelerate/improve their preparation for the GMAT.

Gold Test Prep not only strengthened my skills but my confidence in test taking. They made preparing for the GMAT manageable and convenient. I have a job so the option to study with a tutor at a library or via Skype was a huge plus. My tutor was encouraging, helping me to set realistic goals and reach them within a limited time period. I saw considerable growth with my GMAT score from the practice exams to the extent that I only needed to take the test once. Can't thank Gold Test Prep enough, at the end of the day they produce results.

Angela worked with me, helped me select colleges, wrote drafts of essays and prepped me for college interviews - and then she helped me with nursing school! When I had my first interviews, I was confident and ready - we had done role plays many times! I really enjoyed her calm nature and her reassuring ways. She set a realistic timeframe for me, and was always accessible by phone or email. As a first generation college student, my parents were really worried, but Angela made the whole process much easier and so much less stressful. She is detail oriented, and relates so well to what kids and their families are going through. Working with her was great - and I definitely recommend her!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
