We hired Russ and his crew to install vinyl flooring in a kitchen rental property. From the start Russ was very professional and knew what he was talking about. He was prompt in his response and showed up ON TIME for his appointment estimate. He brought samples and offered different types of alternatives that were within our budget. When it came to scheduling he was able to squeeze us in before we left for vacation so I had the peace of mind the job was done, and done right. My husband said the cutting around the corners was superb and they did an above average job. From start to finish, Russ was great to work with and we highly recommend him.

Peter and his team were professional, detailed, thorough and worked quickly to remove old, tarnished vinyl flooring from our office space and restore the original wood underneath to a brilliant luster. I could hardly believe my eyes at how beautiful the floor looked after Peter finished his work. He arrived early, worked late and completed the job quicker than expected for a fair price. He communicated clearly and responded immediately to all of my questions and communications to him. Peter is a true professional who takes pride in his work. I would gladly hire him again to take care of any future flooring projects. Highly recommended.

Cezar and Robson did absolutely first class work. Robson did a floor tile, toilet, vanity, and mirror replacement in our small master bath and Cezar did a full carpet/tile removal and installation of vinyl flooring in our finished basement area and refinishing of our stairwell. The results came out very nice. However, their work did have some rough edges. They were not prepared to isolate their work from the rest of the house and residual dust from the floor removal/finishing ended up covering everything in the rest of the home. They were also somewhat careless in treatment of the home, leaving some stains/unfinished areas. While they were receptive to my requests, I feel more could have been done to care for the home during/after the work completion. We had to almost entirely clean up after them at the end of the day. That said, the price was fair, they did a great job (other than cleaning), and they provided a prompt and detailed quote which is hard to come by these days.

Kwasi and his team were fantastic!! I am very pleased with the results of all projects. Besides putting down laminate flooring on approximately 1200 square ft, Kwasi tiled bathroom floor and installed two vanities. And replaced pine stairs (previously were carpeted) with red oak stairs that he perfectly stained to match the dark brown laminate. And it was the best price out of all the quotes I got. I highly recommend Flambeau Flooring!

Tamas and his team did an excellent job removing old floors -- laminate wood and tile -- and then installing engineered hard wood. Tamas's work all around was excellent -- from the moment we began discussing the project, to the project in action, to afterwords, Tamas was very attentive to questions I had, explaining the process along the way. I'm most impressed with the quality of his workmanship -- and that he was able to mix a stain color that nearly replicated the color I wanted. And all of this was done through sending photos over email as I was not at the location in person. He matched the color perfectly. I highly recommend Tamas Wood Floors for all of these reasons.

I found KJC Construction via Craigslist. That’s not usually a good way to find the best worker, but I got lucky when Chester Chang responded. I knew I'd found a good man when he was in absolutely no rush to enthusiastically go over all the details and to offer valuable advice.____ KJC is usually a one-man show, though he does have helpers when necessary. But one man was all I needed for my kitchen makeover - Chester. The quality of his work and his attention to detail are top notch! It's obvious that he truly enjoys his profession.____ Chester resurfaced my 31 year old laminate counters, which were still very solid, with all-new Formica and new bullnose edges (see photos). A few others who responded to my ad were obviously nervous to attempt that, but Chester was very confident and anxious to tackle it. He did an excellent job! That saved me a fortune compared with removing and replacing them with all new counter tops, which other respondents had tried hard to sell me.____ He also installed vinyl plank flooring over the old tile floor, installed all new baseboards and new ceramic counter backsplashes. In every case his past experience and attention to detail resulted in a beautiful job.____ Chester made good use of plastic sheeting to protect the cabinets and seal the doorways. Virtually no dust made it out of the kitchen! He graciously helped me to remove the stove and frig. from the room, and to later move them back in place.____ I really can't say enough good things about KJC Construction, because KJC is Chester. His work ethic, his pricing, his attitude and his wealth of experience all came together to make our 31 year old kitchen look virtually brand-new again!____ You'll see in my photos that I still have to finish painting the walls, which I chose to do myself. I do enjoy painting. But Chester is more than qualified to do that and much more, such as construction, roofing, plumbing, doors, windows, etc. I have already promised him that he will be my go-to guy for our upcoming bathroom makeover. I have no need or desire to get competing quotes, and that’s a great feeling!____ I highly recommend KJC if you want a real pro who really cares. Check out my before and after photos!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
