What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Jessica is incredible! Skilled as a singer and a teacher, but even more important, supportive and encouraging. I'd had one or two Groupon voice lessons but couldn't really sing with those teachers. But with Jessica, I felt comfortable on the very first day. Already after just 3 lessons I've gained enough confidence to sing into a microphone and have been asked to sing harmony on stage with a band! I recommend her very highly to anyone looking to take that leap into singing because she will truly make developing g your potential a personal quest.

Gabe has been an incredible vocal coach. When I first began seeing him for lessons, I was 6 years out of training and my technique was rough. He was both patient and encouraging. In the 4 months since I’ve been attending regular lessons, I can already do things with my voice that I wasn’t able to achieve even at the peak of my classical training. Gabe is a fantastic instructor. He has stretched my range, improved my performance skills, and continued to come up with beautiful new repertoire. His lesson space is lovely, he is always responsive to messages, he has a great sense of humor, and he is - above all - very skilled at his craft. I look forward to many more years as his student, and am eager to continue honing my instrument with his impeccable guidance! Worth every hour and every penny.
