Mago responded & delivered under difficult circumstances. We were in a pinch having fired our previous painter & needed to meet a tight deadline. He and his team postponed other projects to accommodate us & delivered excellent work, on time & under budget. I would recommend him & his team without hesitation. We were very pleased.

Tony was very professional and did very good work. The painting project took longer than anticipated. He kept me up to date almost daily so knowing what was going on made the delay less stressful. There were no surprises in the the price as the project progressed. I would recommend Tony and will use him again for other projects.

August and his crew were always on time, took care of my new carpet by putting down painters tarps (without prompting), looked over each aspect of the job and completed it both his and my satisfaction, was very personable and did outstanding work for a fair price. I will definitely use him again for future projects.

I have to say I got more than I bargained for hiring this company. Not only is Chris an excellent carpenter, he is a wood genius! All you need to do is give him a general idea of what you want and he will run with it. He did my stair railing, custom built a faux ceiling beam in my kitchen and my laundry hamper for my laundry shoot. In addition, he made sure to install the hamper with hardware that will allow it to lock and keep little fingers from getting squished. Questions he asked were very simple and included, "How high and what color?" which I love because I don't speak wood. His attention to detail is borderline OCD but that's exactly what you want if you expect a project to be done right. His wife Mya is his helper/accountant/painter aka 'jack of all trades'. She's super friendly and helped explain portions of the project to me in layman's terms which I greatly appreciated. I will definitely hire this company again for future projects. They're honest, trustworthy, affordable and do an absolutely outstanding job!

I have hired Aaron to paint three different houses that I have lived in. The last house was over 100 years old and despite the mixed wall surfaces (some plaster from the age of the house and some sheet rock on the newer additions), he did an incredible job. I will never figure out how he always manages to paint such straight lines without painters tape! My current living room has chair railing and he painted the chair railing a glossy white and the lower walls and upper walls are two different colors. He also has an eye for color and convinced me that the darker color I chose was not the right shade to compliment the lighter shade, the undertones or something being different. He painted samples side by side so when they dried I could see and he was right! I had picked two colors that didn't flatter each other. He did the same thing in my kitchen when I picked a color that didn't have the same undertones as my kitchen cabinets and he was right. I felt bad I insisted he paint the kitchen the color I picked and it looked awful against the cabinets. It had to be repainted and he didn't complain or say "I told you so", he just repainted the kitchen the shade I should have trusted him to paint it the first time. I've also had him do accent walls and the lines come together beautifully. I wish I could post pictures of the work he has done. If requested, I will be glad to send them to someone. This is the only painter I will use and highly recommend him. He is of high moral character, works in a very timely fashion, is honest, does beautiful work and at a great price. I wholeheartedly recommend him.

My husband and I bought our dream 1 story ranch style home this past fall. Only thing we didn’t love was that it didn’t have an open concept. We found Level Up Construction using thumbtack and after the initial meeting new we found the team for us. I also gave them an extremely tight timeframe as we wanted to be in our new home by Christmas. Even thru minor setbacks they just worked harder and longer to ensure we were in! Naturally we have some tiny things after having lived here for almost a month, getting a hold of them to come back and fix them has been very easy and not an issue. Work we had done: removing a load baring wall, painting the entire home, adding canned lighting, building an office, removing textured ceiling, laying wood floors/tile, installing a new sink, and installing a kitchen backsplash. We had an idea of we wanted but in talking with them they gave us so many practical changes that we wouldn’t have known about. Paul Sr even threw in the most gorgeous piece of cedar wood to finish off our fireplace. They were always prompt and very easy to talk to. After several quotes their price was more than reasonable. Our friends have all taken their number from us! The only thing I would’ve changed was communicating better that we weren’t keeping any fixtures. As their painter went thru he painted around things so we’ll have some touching up to do. Not a big deal given the tight timeframe we gave them. We’ll definitely be using them again when it’s time to overhaul our master bath!

I hired Bobby to paint our master bedroom and bathroom a few months ago. The rooms have high ceilings which made it something i put off doing myself for a long time. But it was time to get rid of the drab beige that was there when we bought the house and add some color. Bobby did a fantastic job. I've had some bad experiences in the past with painters who do a quick and sloppy job, but Bobby was skilled and proficient. He protected the floors and furniture, hand cut the trim and corners, and worked around my awful popcorn ceilings with ease. He was pleasant and professional to interact with. I was really happy with the price, especially given the quality of work. I'm having him come back to tackle my stairs, hallways, ceilings and closets to spruce the place up for spring. I've also been considering painting our cabinets and feel comfortable that he has the attention to detail that it takes to do that kind of job right. I appreciate that I now have a go to person for quality, affordable painting.

Ben Ford did painting in my home. He was professional, polite, and arrived on time . I had numerous cracks in the drywall in 7 different rooms in my home . I had called in a person to do the patching of the drywall, then I needed a painter . My home had not been painted since it was built 12 years ago . My husband and I were very nervous about how much painting this might turn into , since the walls had ,of course, faded over the years . When Ben arrived, he looked at what needed to be done , he took time to explain in detail what he planned to do to try to avoid painting complete rooms. He also gave me an estimate before he left my home . ( many other painters will take days to just give you an estimate ). He had paint mixed to match my " 12 year old paint". When he was finished ,my husband and I were amazed at how he painted over the drywall patching and blended the paint into the Old paint on the walls . It looked so fresh and clean . A painter could have easily have come into our home and convinced us we needed whole rooms painted. But , Ben Ford was very fair , priced his work very reasonably and he truly did an amazing job. We have already asked him to come back in the spring and paint our faded exterior shutters.

Judy helped me paint my entire apartment when I moved one year ago. Her hand is outstandingly steady; she painted all the trimmings and moldings perfectly without the assistance of painter's tape! Judy is attentive to detail and will do a beautiful job with any color or surface. I recommend her painting services 100%; I can't say enough good things about her work. Judy is also a fierce animal lover, and has owned up to five dogs and three cats at one time. She cares about the health and happiness of any animal she interacts with, and prioritizes proper training for a stress-free lifestyle. I trusted her to care for my puppy 24/7 when I was traveling for a week, and not only did she ensure his safety but she even taught him to stop being afraid of the front staircase and walk more confidently on a leash! I would use Judy's services for painting and puppy care again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

Using Upstate Painting Co. is the best decision anyone can make. The owner himself, Matt Gray came out to give my wife and I an estimate on painting our great room and two bathrooms. Their pricing for what I was getting was better than any of their competitors. More importantly, the job they did was outstanding, professionally done and not a trace of paint splatter was left anywhere. From start to finish Matt and his painters were in and out in no time at all. Upstate Painting Co. made our house look brand new again and our neighbors, HOA, and family are very happy with the results. I highly encourage anyone to use Upstate Painting Co. - they were second to none in professionalism, price, attention to detail and job completion time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
