Joel did a great job with our rescue pug and I would hire him again. In just 6 short 20-30 minute sessions, he provided general obedience training and our dog has been very well behaved since then. He is efficient with his time, sticking to the dog's attention span of 20-30 minutes, and provides positive reinforcement, thus avoiding the things like choke or shock collars. He also provided guidance to my family on what we should or shouldn't do. Joel was very affordable compared to the various options out there but I felt like we sacrificed nothing. Lessons were private and in my house or neighborhood. Quality was excellent and you can tell Joel cares about you individually and not as just another client. He also follows up after the sessions are done to check in and make sure all is okay. Top notch!

We have had only one session with Lena and have already seen amazing results with our 1 y.o. dog. Lena gives hands-on training to you and your dog. We are training our pup to be a therapy dog, and he is already well on his way to having the skills needed to pass the test. Well done Lena Skov! Glad we found you on Thumbtack!!!

I could not be more satisfied with Kevin's K-9 Academy. My puppy did a 3 week train and board and wow was it worth every penny! Kevin updated me throughout the training with videos and progress. Kevin followed up to every question I had and I had many. When my puppy came home, Kevin took the time to review the commands and how he worked with my puppy. My puppy is trained with his same personality (which was really important to me). Now that my puppy is back home I can tell how much good the training did him, Kevin was a complete advocate for my puppy and his training. With that said, the training was so amazing I am sending my other dog too! Thank you Kevin, we could not be more pleased and appreciative.

We rescued our german shepherd Ritter when he was about 1 year old. He had come from an abusive past and was a bit of a mess. We engaged John shortly after we got Ritter and John helped us turn Ritter into the confident and well trained dog he is today. John is great reading dogs and knowing what it takes to reach their potential and knows what is too much. He trains interactively and it helped us so much but more importantly, it helped Ritter immensely. I cannot say enough good things about John. Many people compliment us on how well trained Ritter is and we always highly recommend John.

Mariah did an awesome job with our 2 year old Husky Leonidas. We could barely walk him before hiring her and now he is perfect on a leash. He is perfect walking buddy now! We would definitely recommend her for all of your puppy and even older dogs training needs!

I cannot recommend Jarod highly enough. The work he put into training my dog was unbelievable and he has absolutely transformed my dog. My fearful, anxiety ridden pup came home confident and obedient and full of life. You WILL NOT find a better or more dedicated trainer.

I rescued a 90llb lab mix, Ringo. I believe he is 1-2 years old. Ringo had ZERO leash training when I got him. To my knowledge, he had never been walked on a leash at all. The first few weeks, I had to walk him with a flat collar and a harness that had two leashes connected to both. On our walks, he would put on the brakes, drag me through yards trying to chase squirrels, try to wiggle out of his collar, REFUSE to turn down certain streets - it was really tough. It was also extremely dangerous because I live near very busy roads with a lot of traffic. After just the first week of training, Ringo was noticeably better on his walks and it made our walks SO much more enjoyable. Fast forward to 4 weeks of training, he walks beside me and auto-sits before we cross main road. He no longer rushes in the door knocking me over or when I leave. Instead, he politely sits and waits for me to leave or enter first. Also, he walks very confidently with his head held high and a sashay in his step - its clear he is happier now that he has some structure. About the trainer: he is very knowledgeable and knows A LOT about dog behavior. He spends a lot of time with the dog AND owners answering questions and providing feedback/suggestions on what needs to be worked on. He will explain in detail why/what he is doing. He is extremely trust worthy and very communicative. It's also great to have someone like Paul to call on if I need help with Ringo because his training is for the life time of the dog.

Stacy is an amazing trainer. She really blew me away with how much she knew about dog behavior and training. I was having issues with my dog attacking me when I put her harness on. It was so stressful for me and my dog to the point that I was in tears. I exchanged several emails with Stacy and even before our first session she went out of her way to provided information. She included articles, website links, and videos. After just one session I saw huge inprovements in my dog's behavior. The harness is no longer an issue! Stacy also helped me address the doorbell and guests entering my home, barking, and being defensive over food and the garbage can. I would highly recommend Stacy to anyone in need of a dog trainer.

Wow! its amazing, i loved the way training went. Speaking from my own experience, Sheetal has helped us a lot to communicate with my dog and understand my dog better. Its truly amazing. I have also tried her methods, when done correctly; they work awesome. Earlier my dog was having trouble walking on streets with me, he used to pull me everywhere. Worst to tell he was ignoring what my husband say, but not now, tons of thanks to Sheetal. He is the same dog but improved one. He listens to me and my husband, his excess barking stopped that is just amazing, he will walk with me on streets, people are so amazed with his behavior, now i am proud of my dog. Thanks Sheetal! What you have done, to bring lots of joy to our family.

    About

My unique approach to dog training is not just teaching your dogs mindless tricks, but addressing the dog's state of mind and building their confidence by teaching them life skills and how to live happily by your side. I also teach you how to be a confident and trustworthy leader that your dog will respect and not take advantage of. I love seeing the drastic transformation of the human/dog relationship by providing both with a skill set to build their confidence and make everyday life happy and stress free.

    About

Carolina Natural Dog is founded on the principles of Natural Dog Training (developed by Kevin Behan). Dogs are social by nature and they react to the world around them according to the laws of nature, not human reason. Working with a dog's energy instead of fighting against it, will allow you and your dog to achieve balance. A fundamental belief of Carolina Natural Dog is that energy is communication in its purest form. By learning to understand your dog's natural energy, you can bring out their true, cooperative and social nature. I have spent years reading, studying and implementing these techniques with my dogs, dogs at local rescues and with my clients. I have seen remarkable changes in the behavior, disposition and tendencies of dogs that were once in the throws of instability and chaos. I have trained and consulted with the leaders of the Natural Dog Training philosophy to gain knowledge from their vast experience and bring it to my life and the lives of my clients here in NC. I want to bring this amazing philosophy to you and to your dog. Together we can discover your dog's true nature.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
