FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We like to take the time to learn as much as we can about the student. We want to know if they have traditionally struggled in a subject, what are their current needs and goals, and what type of learner they are. If appropriate, we will arrange for the student to take a free online assessment to evaluate their math and/or reading skills. This can help us develop a personalized tutoring plan that addresses their any underlying weaknesses that have been identified. We are also happy to communicate with the student's teacher(s) to make sure that our tutoring efforts are coordinated with the activities and behaviors in the classroom. We then work to match the student with the best tutor based on specialty, schedule, and personality. We always want to create a positive match so that a student is truly comfortable with his/her tutor and will learn best.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Duke University and began my teaching career in Virginia as a biology and chemistry teacher. We are always working to stay abreast of the latest educational trends - whether it has to do with learning styles research or upcoming SAT changes. We attend continuing education training, read widely, and belong to various professional groups to stay current.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I grew up in a family of educators and have always loved teaching. Above Grade Level gave us a great chance to help students throughout our community when they needed extra help that their teachers didn't have the time to provide.
