Brad provided an excellent service to correct a plumbing issue in my kitchen. We have a standard 80's era dual well sink and the left side had corroded or eroded enough such that washers and spacers had disintegrated. I was unsure of how to fix it, but Brad took one look at the issue and knew what needed to be done. He brought a few parts with him, but my description of the problem was lacking some details of course and that meant he had to make an extra trip to the hardware store. Once he got back with the proper parts in hand, the job went quite smoothly. I could not be more pleased with his efforts and attention to detail. A great hire.

Normally I do my plumbing, including replacing a gas water heater, toilets and bathroom sinks, tec. However, I was not having any luck replacing my kitchen faucet. Little room and 2 deep sink tubs. Decided to hire Adam, who was very efficient, very nice and reasonably priced. Will differently contact Adam again if the need arises.

Even though he wasn't able to fit my plumbing issue in his schedule for today. He offered to walk me through a temporary fix. This is by far above and beyond the call of duty. He made the suggestion out of the kindness of his heart. I am thankful for his over the phone help. Even though I couldn't wait till tomorrow he wanted to help just in case I couldn't find someone today. Thank you!!!!!

Steve was hired to to do what we thought was a simple tile job, replacing missing/damaged tiles to the shower wall in our recently purchased home. After removing the old tile, we were shocked to find out that the walls were totally rotted out! Upon further inspection he discovered the floor (and subflooring) under the tub was rotted also! The cause of all the water damage? Old, rusty deteriorated plumbing fixtures (pipes, drains faucets) that were hidden from plain view. Steve "held our hand" every step of the way, assuring us through his calm demeanor, expertise and skill as he spent the next three days tearing out all old bath and shower components (including floors and walls) and totally rebuilding and installing the new shower and tub! Knowing we were first time homeowners who just moved in, he was extremely generous with the bill he presented to us. We will definitely call on him for future repairs/remodel projects!

Victor was awesome! He was willing to come on a Saturday morning and install a new water heater. He brought/installed new parts and even hauled the old water heater away (which was totally unexpected and a HUGE help). He was completely finished within a couple of hours, and the new unit looks great. Can't say enough good things about Victor's work, and he is going to be my go-to plumbing guy from now on!

Full kitchen renovation including, tile backsplash, drywall work, electrical, plumbing, cabinet making, and cook top restoration. Truely nothing he can't do. He even hung antique doors for us. He is more picky about how his work looks than I am and that says a lot.

Hector Enrique (Torres) has completed several projects for us in the past few weeks including plumbing and general carpentry. All of the projects were completed in a very timely and workmanlike manner. On top of that, his rates were very reasonable. We will be using Hector Enrique (Torres) for all of our repairs.

He is humble, honest and pays attention to the details. He dresses appropriately, is prompt and very friendly. I have found a great handyman in Johnny and will continue to use his services!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
