FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My rates reflect a sliding discount for any lesson length greater than 30 min./week, whether that be for one student taking longer lessons, or for multiple students from one household. Books are not included; i order those for the student and am reimbursed by the student/parent.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When I get a transfer student, I like to know what book(s) have been used previously. We have to work together for a few weeks before I can know definitively where the student is in his or her progress. Some review may be necessary. With beginners, we start right out in a set of books appropriate to the student's age, and we go from there. It is important to understand that the only "shortcut" to reading music is consistent practice. I do everything I can at the lesson; what happens between lessons -- PRACTICE -- is what determines progress.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received a Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, in 1979, with a major in music education and piano as my primary instrument. I belong to several professional networks which focus on the profession of piano teaching. Members share knowledge of new materials, answer questions about relating to students and parents, discuss questions about specific pieces and books, and discuss virtually every issue which can arise in the piano teaching profession. I also subscribe to publications which contain scholarly articles on music, the piano, and piano teaching.
