Mr. Gaylord did an excellent job installing platforms for my home entertainment system that were very sturdy and were well finished. He also installed shelving for a basement garage in order to help organize that space and open up an area for a woodworking shop. He was prompt, efficient, honest and insightful. I give him my highest recommendation for his carpentry and handyman services.

Darin replace some rotting wood around our front door frame. I was a little skeptical of just replacing the bad areas but didn't like the expense of a new door. After seeing the final product I am very happy. I also, observed him working and I could see how solid the wood was underneath. This made me a lot more confident in taking his advice. His experience not only saved us a lot of money, it gave us a front door we can be proud of again.

We found Southern Woodworks on Facebook Marketplace that did refinishing of furniture. They responded to us within hours. They stripped our oversized dining table of its water based finish and did a oil based finish that doesn’t show water rings or turn white from a pizza box. We were very satisfied with the progress pictures and the final product. Very reasonably priced also. We would highly recommend this company for any of your wood furniture that is in need of some TLC!!!

Adam reinvented 2 of my tray ceilings- one to a coffered style using handmade barnwood stained beams. The MBR was filled with 'gold overlay' wood in a beautiful pattern; gorgeous cedar barnwood mantle; added barnwood beams to my MBR ceiling (fitting perfectly into existing crown molding), added floating shelves & countertop cabinetry; created builtins in my master closet-a desk area & separate wrapping center, complete with mobile sewing machine unit! And he created a beautiful sliding barnwood door into the Master bath, ordering the hardware we found together online. He also took an existing entertainment center and matched the finish perfectly creating a full wall of matching builtins in my upstairs loft. He also helped me create wooden 4' tall bride & groom figures. I use 'created' because he patiently listened, looked over countless picture ideas, and consulted with me in detail before beginning. He will work within a given budget & not over charge you! He is trustworthy (he had a key while remodeling my home), creative, precise, and actually fun to be around. He takes pride in his work. He is resourceful and dependable. And as a single woman, I felt completely safe having him in my home!

Martin works meticulously with attention to detail, (e.g., good joins,) and will add extra touches to make it just a little more distinctive. He offers suggestions without being overbearing. He tries to find the best price on materials. He thinks about the project in terms of longevity of the project

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
