Chris was hired to demo for early renovation preparation. He also installed faucets and painted the entire home to include trim and doors. I appreciate his eagerness to keep us on schedule in our reno and his diligence to see the job done quickly and with the quality expected. He put in the extra time needed to keep us on track and demonstrated pride in his work by his attention to detail. I was pleased with his work and found his quote to be of a better value than many of his competitors offering similar services. Thanks Chris!

We bought an older home in Donelson that needed some serious kitchen updating and repair from the 1960's construction. We had a vision on what it could look like. JAZ construction made it all come true. They are outstanding, professional contractors who look out for your satisfaction and pocketbook, every step of the way. We could not be happier in the process and outcome of our kitchen. I would never go anywhere else for remodeling needs. Jose and Fernando are All-Stars. These guys are the best!!

Our relationship with Curtis started with a deck demo/expansion and quickly grew into a near-total home renovation, including: Full deck demolition and expansion during the 2016 ice storm - aka no power! Gas line installation to grill on deck and cooktop in kitchen. Replacement of fully tiled shower off kitchen with shelving storage. Replacement of vanity and commode. Installation of over the range microwave/vent. Full electrical panel replacement in home and subpanel at pool. Drastic widening of opening between entry way and living room. Complete flooring removal and replacement in 60% of house. Stair retreading and replacement with stain to match flooring. Complete popcorn ceiling removal in entire home. Whole home baseboard and crown moulding installation. Painting of all interior walls. Complete replacement of all interior doors with solid wood doors. Removal, resizing, and replacement of front door. Complete gut of second upstairs bathroom and installation of new tub, heated tile, fixtures, vanity, etc. Complete gut of master bathroom and installation of new custom doorless shower, heated tile, fixtures, vanity, Toto washlet, etc. We are very pleased with Curtis' work and at this point consider him a friend. As such, we have referred him to several neighbors, colleagues and friends, and will do so again.

Al was a pleasure to work with. His attention to detail was above and beyond expectations. Several contractors had turned down the job due to the complexity of staining the top slats, but Al got it done and it looks great! I couldn't be happier with the finished product.

In an age of hiring crews of cheap labor, where "good enough" is just that, it's refreshing to find someone who is a true craftsman. Paul is what others here have stated, hard working, skilled and lightning fast. He is also someone who can not only hang the store bought cabinets but can build the cabinets from scratch. I am well pleased with the work he has done and highly recommend his services.

Joseph completed several projects for us, our family room and our master bathroom suite. Both were major renovations, requiring several disciplines, electrical, and plumbing, in addition to his expertise in construction. Mr. Sortet completed both jobs timely, on budget with beautiful results. We couldn't be more pleased with not only the work performed, but his work ethic, professionalism and knowledge. We highly recommend Joseph for any job, big or small! Ruth A., Jackson TN

Jason Hildabrand renovated my kitchen in 2015, and I have been extremely happy with the results. He refaced my cabinets, laid a new hardwood floor, tiled the backsplash, painted, and built new trim around the doors and windows, doing an outstanding job with each project. He gave me the option of letting him choose things for me to select from, light fixtures, faucet, tiles, etc., and I am happy with all those choices. And that made it so easy for me. Best of all, in a way, Jason was always there when he said he would be, ready to do what he said he would do. Working with Jason was probably my best experience in home improvement.

It's so nice that I hired recom LLC to help me finish the replacement for the hardwood floor. I was hesitating to decide on the laminated floor or an engineered hardwood floor. Mr. Amin is so patient and professional for answering all of my questions. The installers were so hard working with high efficiency. They finished the project within one day! The most important thing is they offered me the cheapest price! I am so happy to have them!

Around 2013, My husband and I were introduced to Bill Maxwell through a good friend of ours when we needed help remodeling a rental property. Bill did an excellent job with everything - it was apparent from this first encounter that Bill was very hardworking and conscientious. It was wonderful to have someone that communicated with me throughout the entire project, which was very important to me. From that first job he did for us, we continued to call him to work on various projects for us until the month that he left Monroe. We always felt his prices were fair and reasonable, he showed up when he said he would and would always contact me if he could come over earlier or later. He worked a full time job and did work for us on the side, and we never had a problem working with his schedule, it was worth the wait. He worked on our home and then when we built a house, I asked him to come over and do jobs around the house for me. I trust Bill completely to handle any job he agreed to do, and would often leave my home open so he could get started if we weren’t home, he is extremely trustworthy and we have always been pleased with his work. I knew about a year ago that he was planning to move, so I Asked him to do as many jobs for us before he left. I got to know Bill through the years and gained a lot of respect for him. Sad to see him leave Louisiana, but happy for him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
