Great teacher! Really been enjoying the lessons! Wish it was longer for the same price or closer in physical location (lesson through facetime has its limitations), but have been loving it so far. He's a really encouraging teacher, very excited and always willing to help and answer any questions I have.

I have greatly enjoyed my experience at Nashville Music Academy! The lessons (banjo) themselves have been wonderful and the experience with the company is top notch. They have helped me by setting up recurring appointments and payments to make the experience as easy as possible.

Though the time that I took piano lessons was short, Mr. Pennell's experience and interest in the subject made each hour an event to look forward to. My progress was noticeable within the first few weeks. Tips and advice that he gave me bettered my piano skills in a way that remains today, and his flexibility in catering towards my learning style was very respectable. He personalized lessons and did so without complaint. Mr. Pennell's insight and knowledge should absolutely be pursued through lessons; he's an outstanding teacher and musician.

Nathan is an incredible piano instructor! I figured getting a late start to learning piano was going to be extremely difficult, as I’m in my late 20’s and not the fastest learner, but Nathan has made it so easy to pick up on the basics quickly. I wanted to learn to read music as well as chords so I can play my favorite songs and he has touched on both sides of that learning process with great detail. I would absolutely recommend his services to anyone interested in learning piano and look forward to continuing my lessons for a long time! :)

I took weekly guitar lessons from Matt Kass for six years when he lived in Philadelphia. Matt focuses on teaching you the music you want to learn to play and at a pace that is comfortable to your level of proficiency. He combines instruction on the fundamentals of playing a guitar with the basics of music theory so that lesson time is spent not just on how to play the guitar by why particular chords or notes work together and their relationship to the different modes of the major scale. As a professional musician, Matt is thoroughly knowledgeable about the guitar and music in general but is incredibly personable, thoughtful, reliable and friendly. He is able to tailor his teaching approach to your individual needs and helps you progress at a pace that is appropriate to your skill level. The thing that impressed me the most in Matt's teaching ability was his patience and willingness to help me around obstacles or plateaus in my playing ability. You feel that he is fully invested in your learning and shows a willingness to try different approaches to helping you succeed. I would highly recommend Matt as a guitar instructor. He is a terrific teacher and an excellent musician.

Patricia really wants you to learn at your own pace with your own style of learning. She personalizes the lessons given your background, interests, expectations. I have been very pleased with her efforts. You as the student need to work at it as hard as she does.

I've been taking guitar lessons with Dan for a couple months now. I have been played piano since I can remember, and always wanted to learn how to play guitar, but never got around to it. I can say I'm definitely getting more comfortable and confident with it after a few lessons. I like that he doesn't just teach you basic chords, but also really gets into finger picking and intricate exercises as well. On top of being a great teacher, he's such a friendly and inspiring human being. I would highly recommend guitar lessons with him!

The coaching at O-Kaye truly is one of a kind. Natalie & her team strive to discover each students talent and giftings as well as who they desire to be as an artist or performer. They are wonderful with children as well as adults. O-Kaye Productions provides ample opportunity for each student to perform in public settings. My children always enjoy their lessons and walk away with constructive criticism to grow from. They feel encouraged, yet challenged. O-Kaye Productions events are always so much fun. Natalie plans events with great excellence, always having the student and audience in mind.

Ree is a rare gem in the world of vocal coaches in Music City and beyond. Her expertise, method of instruction, and understanding of how and why the voice works make her one of the most gifted coaches I have encountered. We found her when looking for a vocal coach for our 14-year-old daughter who was new to singing and extremely shy. We knew we found a match when Ree explained her philosophy of teaching--that learning to sing is more than becoming a great singer but about personal growth, confidence, and self-esteem. What is more perfect for a younger person or any person, than that? Since beginning lessons with Ree, our daughter has truly blossomed in her vocal capability, her confidence and her understanding that she has a lot to offer as a performer and a person. Ree is patient, understanding of the courage it takes to find your voice and enthusiastic about teaching the art and craft of singing and song. I would recommend Ree to a seasoned professional, the beginner and the person who wants to sing and believes that they cannot. Trust me--you can sing and Ree will get you there. Wendi from Nashville

Cindy has been the highlight of our week, and we have had lessons every week for almost 2 years now! She is extremely talented and very experienced in the music industry in nashville. She brings her experiences and expertise every time. My son is very creative, and she can relate to him. She also encouraged him to write his own music after he showed interest in it. She makes it fun! Cindy was the perfect introduction to music and the perfect first instrument, piano, teacher. Love her!!!

Bob Lewis was my on and off guitar teacher for close to 10 years in Wilkes-Barre Pa. I started with Bob at 12, gave up (my first mistake!) taught myself came back at 16 and studied with him for four or five years. In those four/five years I learned General to Moderate level Music Theory including Diatonic Theory, Chord building Theory, scale theory, chord progressions, picking posture ect. I could go on for days about what I learned but the fact that the social climate of those thirty minute weekly sessions was always calm, relaxed and full of fresh ideas. Every concept was very straight forward and if it was a bit complex (such as modal guitar solos,) Bob would explain it in a way that made sense based on our prior sessions (aka, he actually adapts to your idiosyncrasies ) At any point when I hit a wall Bob was immediately finding ways to climb over the wall. If it was not in that session by next week he would have devised a plan to work on overcoming the daunting idea at hand. Aside from the straight forward learning methods, if you go into a lesson with Bob off the cuff without any goals in mind for your development he can easily break down what you need to work on and how your should work on it. Also... Bob can shred...so fear not fret board wizards! As for what could have been better I have not much to say. The fact is with most good teachers your own ignorance is usually the problem and when i started at 12 by the time i came back at 16 I realized that Bob's method was not flawed, it was my attention span. The Man is a brilliant guitar player and all around musician and is well worth your time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
