"I've been using James with Nexus Fitness for a little over 2 months now. I am already seeing great results! One of the things I enjoy most about working with James is that he caters the work out to my needs and abilities. He pushes me, but does not kill me. He gives me work outs to do throughout the week so that I am progressing even outside of our personal training sessions. He is also very knowledgeable and is constantly explaining how each exercise affects the body."

"Ethan Painter was my trainer for over a year. I approached him about using weight training to address bone loss in my hips. The program that he designed was so effective, that within 1 year the bone loss stopped as determined by a bone density test. He was always pleasant and encouraging. My goals for each session were challenging, but attainable. I never thought that I would enjoy weight training, however, I looked forward to my time and my overall strength and fitness increased substantially. Ethan designs each client's program very individually, tailoring their workouts to their specific needs and goals. "When I first was started my search for a personal trainer I was immediately drawn to body by hunter. Just from searching through countless profiles and reading other trainers I could tell immediately that body by hunter was the choice for me. With Hunters long impressive resumé, it was most certain the best “bang for my buck.” In first contacting Body by Hunter, he responded promptly and directed me to fill out the fitness profile on BodybyHunter.com after completing the fitness profile of my self, he immediately got back to me about my current level of fitness. One of my main goals was to lose a lot of body fat that I had gained in my first year of college and after taking a year off lifting, also on of my biggest health concerns was that I was smoking a 1 pack to 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day, along with my unhealthy eating choices of fast food, junk food, etc... Now that I have been training with hunter for only a month I am no longer smoking, nor having craving after my intense, but very rewarding workouts, along with the supplement he recommended I have fixed my poor dietary choices. I was at 200-205 pounds when starting with Hunter, now after a month I have dropped to 185 while losing fat and gaining muscle. With Hunters positivity, he gets me looking forward to my workouts instead of dreading the gym. Also he is so flexible with my crazy schedule he always caters to my scheduling needs. "Ashley is an amazing personal trainer. We’ve just begun working out together, so I’ll update my review in a few months but I’ve been so pleased with my initial sessions that I had to submit my initial reaction. Ashley tailors my workout to work around my back issues however she still challenges me to push beyond my comfort zone. "He did not take I can't for an answer. He always pushed me and expected me to do better. He truly cared about my health and review everything before starting me on my weight loss journey. He was always on time and quick to answer my questions. Very professional and concerned about what I ate or did not eat for the day. He placed me on the correct program fit for me. "In a personal trainer I was searching for a cross between Jillian Micheals and Bob Harper, I was lucky to that with Knox Pilkerton. Knox is passionate about health and fitness, he's committed to making sure his clients reach their fitness goals. "I have been working with Jim for almost a year. It sounds cliche to say he has changed my life, but I don't have a better way to summarize it. Although the certificates say "personal trainer," Jim is a true coach whose professional knowledge coupled with his personal approach to holistic wellness (mind, body and spirit) have given me a body and an outlook that I never dreamed possible. I am 45 years old and was a size 10 when I started with Cutting Edge. I wasn't really looking for a transformation, just a good workout. I was hiring a trainer because I wanted to work out with intensity and consistently. When I started to lose weight (and I had plenty to lose), I told Jim I didn't want to be skinny; I want to be solid. At less than 5 feet tall, I need to feel like I can stand my ground. It took me a long time to trust him and trust that I could lose weight and still feel safe. But he earned my trust. Now, I am a size 0 and totally unafraid. I am strong AND I wear a bikini (a combination I never thought possible!) The results have been way behind anything I could have imagined for myself, not just physically, but emotionally too. I can't wait to see what is next! Jim has the exercise and nutrition thing down to a very exact science. He is boundlessly knowledgable and keeps abreast of the latest research. But there's more to it. His "all in" approach inspires me to dig deep, to reflect, to set goals, to keep track, to figure out why, to understand myself and my behavior in order to make change and build real, lasting strength...the kind that comes from deep inside. Although he has many clients, you always feel like you are the only one. He has on many, many occasions written me personalized workouts that I can do at work, at hotels, on vacation. He is incredibly available via email, too. Whether I am confused or just having a moment of weakness, Jim responds thoroughly and thoughtfully with unconditional support. He is an endless fountain of positive energy and useful information and I have yet to ask him a question he can't answer. The fact that Jim is without question an expert in his field matters beyond his ability to answer my questions though. I trust him to keep me safe in the gym. Lifting weights without a professional who chooses the right weight, watches carefully, and stays protectively close is dangerous. Thanks to Jim's knowledge, experience and diligence, I lift heavy weights to the point of fatigue and have remained injury free despite my age and my size. He really is right there with every rep. But finding the right trainer goes beyond making sure they are highly qualified. The relationship is equally important. I succeed in large part because I want to make Jim proud. I wonder what he would think about what I am about to eat (or drink) before I put it in my mouth. If he expects me to run before our next session, or writes "homework" workouts for me for the weekend, I can't wait to do them. If he hands me a weight I don't think I can handle, I suddenly want to be able to lift it so badly. If I think I'm done and he says he needs more from me, I find more. He pushes me with such intensity that I've come to realize that I had (and still have) no idea what I am capable of...but he does and he won't let me settle for anything less. And yet, as tough as he is on the gym floor, I have met few people in my life who have a heart half as big as Jim's. He is kind, and true, and gentle, and caring. And knowing him has enriched my life beyond measure. I feel very lucky to have Jim in my corner. "

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment.
