Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

These two gentlemen were very efficient in mounting my wall mount for my TV. They were on time, polite, and professional. They also insured before installing the TV that it was to my liking. I would definitely recommend using them and what they say they charge is exactly what they charge me.

Installed 55 inch tv mount and tv over chimney. Sent picture to confirm job is within scope, wires can be hidden in wall and confirm the price. Installer confirmed price once I provided the tv mount. Price was reasonable and it was definitely worth it (for the installation). My only caveat I didn't anticipate was the add-on items. Based on the picture it would have been "nice" if installer had mentioned I would possibly need an extension cable, and extra wall cover that's not included in price. Luckily I had a longer HMDI cable or I would have definitely regretted it. But i'm guessing that is all part of the "business" to provide these items at a high markup. Overall, clean finish and just what I wanted.

Guy was on time. TV is slightly tilted, enough that I noticed as soon as I came home, but guy had already left (spouse was home during installation). What bothers me most is I requested and paid for a wall mount that would tilt sideways, but he installed on that tilts up and down instead. Other than that, for what I hear, the guy was polite, punctual and professional.

We need some help to install a 77inch on a new wall mount. We had an old mount which was holding a 65inch and was slightly higher than what we want for our new TV. Farhad from FixTman helped us complete the job perfectly. Though he was little late for appointment, it was worth waiting for him. Very polite and good workmanship from Farhad. Cannot ask for anything better. Yes would hire them again as needed!!! Thanks Farhad and FixTman.

Ali seems knowledgeable about TV wall mounting however he can get better at doing proper assessment during concealment of wires behind dry wall so that he can bring the right tools and apply his skills correctly. My first TV was wall mounted by Amery from this company and the job was done very meticulously hence I gave the installation of 2nd TV to this company. But then this different pro was not as skilled as the previous one. The pro was late by 20 mins without informing me, however I was okay as I can understand that he may be finishing his previous job. But then he didn't have the necessary tools to finish the concealment of wires behind the dry wall for which he wanted to come next day. He mentioned that there was a stud owing to which the wire could not pass through but then his co-worker who came next day said the wall had insulation, which seemed reasonably accurate. Unfortunately, he was late by 1:30 hours the next day without informing me so I'd to reschedule the appointment as I'd other commitments and could not wait for him to show up. 3rd day, his co-worker accompanied him and they were 'on time' and finished the job together. Thanks for getting it done finally! Workmanship could have been better as a bigger hole is left unaddressed during wire concealment. I'm posting pictures of both the jobs (1st TV wire concealment and 2nd TV wire concealment) to decide on what I mean by good workmanship.
