I had a week that only lacked a dead dog to make it a country song. Under some duress I had a last minute need for some moving help and other companies I contacted could not accommodate. The men from WM Pro confirmed they could do it, showed up early, were professional, and did a great job. I will call them again and share their information (as well as Thumbtack).

Chris does it ALL. The owner of the storage facility in Wimberley where I had been storing all my furniture recommended Little Guys Movers in San Marcos. I was moving into a small 565 sq ft condo in north Austin and would be taking only some of my furniture. They quoted me about $895. I decided to get a second opinion and happened on this website (Thank you Lord). I had no idea how many options I had until I started getting non stop calls from movers with all kinds of prices and details...like how many guys, whether they had their own truck or would be renting a uhaul, availability, etc. Some had a wide open schedule and even though I thought I wanted it done right away, I wondered why they had so few other jobs if they were that good. I was also wondering what I would do about everything being covered with that dust and grime after 2 1/2 yrs. That's when Shane called from Tx Elite Movers. She took charge of the entire situation...she knows exactly what to do and she explains exactly what will happen and when, plus she and Chris are such nice people...very honest and they are into what they are doing. They are professionals, not people who move furniture to make some money. This is what they do. I already liked her but when I ran it by her about the dust she was immediately all over that, explaining it was not a problem for them bc they also do make ready cleaning so she would just put a cleaning kit in the truck and the guys would wipe down the furniture before they loaded it...no extra charge...they would do it as part of their service. Chris even brought an extra man who had been with him on the job before mine...no extra charge so there were three instead of two. The two men with him also knew what they were doing and were thoroughly enjoying being there with Chris. I've had movers who, number one, didn't know what they were doing, number two, weren't that happy to be doing it, plus I would end up paying more than we had agreed on. When Chris showed me the bill I was surprised, but in a good way. He only charged me $288. Even though I didn't have that many pieces, my furniture was BIG and some very heavy, but again, that was no problem for them. When Chris discovered they had forgotten my bed rails he took his men home, went back to storage, got them and came back with Shane ( his wife) and they assembled my bed. I gave them keys to my storage and to my condo because I hadn't moved in yet and needed to be somewhere. I would hire them again in a minute. In fact I just did hire them to move my RV into storage. I'll let you know how that goes after tomorrow.

I have used a couple different moving companies and I would hire Chris with his pickup and trailer anytime! I have never seen anyone move a piano so quickly. I know it was crazy heavy but they sure made it look easy. Thanks Chris!!

We hired Lone Star Lawn Care and Services back in February. From initial contact to project completion was about a week—incredibly punctual compared to much of what you’ll find in other companies. Recently, we discovered that two yard sprinkler heads were enclosed within the flowerbed. After informing LoneStar of this oversight, it was quickly remedied. I will definitely hire LoneStar again for all of our landscaping and outdoor masonry needs. :)

Jason was very responsive and friendly/professional whenever I called with questions. I had to change my move date which was no problem. He and Stephen arrived early on my move day, but didn't pressure me to get started early if I wasn't ready. I was a little nervous all my stuff wouldn't fit in the trailer they had, but it did with plenty of room to spare (1/1 apartment). They had plenty of moving blankets and equipment to make the move quick while protecting my belongings. They were careful with my stuff which I really appreciate. Best priced moving company I found in Austin with high-quality service. Would definitely recommend them!

We hired Jon to replace our wooden 9 year old crumbling fence that had partially blown down from a storm. We got lots of quotes from big fencing companies and no one could come close to the price that Jon offered us. Jon's quote was about $10 cheaper per linear foot than the other companies could offer! Jon and his crew did a beautiful job on the fence. They even had to deal with connecting the fence to a large tree and they did it seamlessly. I am so happy that we had Jon and his crew come out to do our fence. They were able to finish the project in just three days and I hardly knew they were even there. The best part is, that rather than just take the old wood to the dump, they offered it to a few couples who needed the wood repair their fences/make crafts which is super environmentally friendly! I will definitely hire them in the future to do other projects around our house.

I moved to Austin in short notice and did not schedule any unloading/unpacking services with any moving company in Austin. No company could help immediately except Todd. He charged a reasonable rate and managed to move my entire one bedroom apartment's worth of furniture and belongings in just over an an hour by himself. I had a large sectional couch, large coffee table, queen sized bed and bed frame, and 8 medium sized boxes. He's quick, skilled, and friendly. I recommend using Todd if you are moving one or two bedrooms worth of materials.

Above and beyond! Hands down, the most client-friendly moving service we've experienced. Rarely do I write reviews (most often, it's just word of mouth) however, their work deserves a review. Working with Andy specifically, his team was prompt, professional and established a level of trust that separates them from others. Moving an entire home can be stressful (especially with a kid). Andy gave us an extremely very fair quote and stuck to it. No hidden games. During the move an item was misplaced. Not only did Andy take full responsibility, he apologized for the inconvenience and replaced it right away! He mentioned establishing trust with his clients is the most important aspect of owning his company. Moving forward, 1Source Moving will be our only moving company. Congratulations Andy, you've made a client for life. Thank you for your trust, leadership and quality of work. I am confident it will pay dividends. Choosing a moving company just became the easiest decision I'll ever need to make. Thanks again!

I just want to make sure everyone out there knows that this company is the best company I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. I am almost 60 and I have moved about 30 times in my life. In all those moves, I was never as pleased and completely satisfied with a moving company as I am with Right Choice Moving. Caleb and his team treated my moving items as if they owned them. They took great care in wrapping and protecting, and moving an extremely heavy item up 40 stairs with a very sharp turn between floors. Not only did they move quickly and carefully, they stayed to make sure I was satisfied and did not rush me at all. They set up everything and made sure all was working properly too! They are clean, professional, punctual, polite and easy to communicate with on what you want, and they find the way to perfectly accomplish your moving wishes. Above All, Their Prices are very affordable and don't be fooled just because they will have better prices than anyone else out there --- their expert performance cannot be beat and is worth much, much more than they charge. I highly recommend them and expect they will expand quickly as they will be swamped by just my family and friends alone! Better book now while you can! Great job Caleb!!! Awesome Service!!!

I don't know where to start first. Allison is amazing! She has worked with me the past two weekends organizing my 2nd floor after a total remodel. She does it all. She helps you decide what to keep and what to donate or trash, gives interior design help, organizes personal filing systems for your paperwork and she will keep a lookout for furniture for a redesign to meet your budget. I have never had fun doing this dreaded job and have avoided it for years! Allison makes it fun and keeps me on task. Allison is professional and worked fast moving things around and reorganizing my closets, dresser drawers, linen closets and rooms. If you always wanted that high-end look on a budget or you have a larger buget and know what you want, she can help you design your space perfectly. I can't recommend her enough. She is not done at my home. I want all of my house organized including the garage. I plan on having her back to keep me on track! Allison is very talented and has many tips and ideas from her years of experience. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment with her. Just leave some time for me! I am not giving her up.

This team worked hard, worked well and worked fast. I moved into a house and hated the color of the walls. I decided to repaint the entire house but knew that there were parts of the process that I would have to get a professional to complete. When Marco and his team came to paint the staircase, it was clear to me that I was in over my head and they gave me a quote to paint the entire house. The price was reasonable so I accepted. After seeing the first coat, I was immediately elated. The color looked great and the quality of the work was incredible. Their crew was finished in 2 days with a two-level house. They took great care to protect the floors, trim and other areas of the house. I highly recommend them and would definitely use their services again.

Daniel was great! Not only was he professional and persistent with obstacles that UT Austin West Campus apartments presented, but he was also patient with me trying to coordinate moving in 2 college kids at the same time! He even went with me to the hardware store to buy screws and bolts for a TV mount! You can't go wrong!

She did a spectacular job getting our house ready for move-out. Even though our air conditioning was broken, she worked hard without complaint and did a great job on the house, despite it being 90 degrees in the house. I would definitely hire her again if we hadn't moved out of Austin! I highly recommend A.D. Cleaning Services.

Jay and his associate, I forgot the name, were great. I will definitely recommend and use them again next year. They were quick and efficient with moving my belongings. There were a couple blemishes but I did not expect everything to be perfect. Their supervisor called me after the move was completed and provided a discount on my next move for the minor issues. I appreciate feeling valued as a customer. The movers worked their butts off. Again, I will recommend and use again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
