Janet is amazing. She began tutoring my daughter in Chemistry almost four months ago. I have only positive thoughts about our experience. The difference in my daughter is evident. She seemingly had little confidence in herself with regards to chemistry, and now verbalizes how much better she feels about it. Janet is very patient and thorough with her instruction. I feel that Janet has tapped Into my daughter's strengths and weaknesses, which is clearly helping my daughter feel successful . Janet has made herself accessible to my daughter if she has questions in between sessions, and my daughter feels comfortable reaching out to her if necessary. I am quite confident Janet is making a huge difference in my daughter's academic life , and that we will be with her over the next couple of years.

Alfonso has had 3 tutoring sessions with my son. Upon our first meeting I provided him with some information that my son's teacher had forwarded to me regarding what my son was having challenges with. Alfonso reviewed the information and was quickly able to assess his needs and get started. So much was accomplished after just their first session. Another thing is that Alfonso was a good fit for my son. Not only was he teaching him but he was able to connect with him.--which makes all the difference. My son looks forward to his tutoring sessions (this is the kid that was once dead set against tutoring and didn't see the benefit of it). I am so pleased and extremely grateful for what Alfonso has been able to do for my son. I listen to them and my son is actually excited and engaged. I would encourage anyone who has a child who is struggling to seek help and Alfonso would be a great place to start.

We first tried in person tutoring and then tried online tutoring. We were very happy with both. We ended up sticking with online tutoring.

I highly recommend Armin and his company, Ace Tutoring Services. Armin has been tutoring my high-school senior son in physics and precalculus two to four times a week for over six weeks now. Armin is a gifted tutor. He has a magnificent grasp of the material. He knows how to relay the information to my son in a way that my son understands the material. He engages my son in the work and doesn't just "talk at him" like so many tutors do. He explains the basic concepts and then has my son work the problems. He has my son explain back to him why he is working the problems the way he is and the reasoning behind the steps he is taking. I can't say enough about how impressed I am with Armin's skill as a tutor and his personal skills. My son is typically a reluctant student and usually dislikes his tutors. In the past with other tutors, my son has has not been engaged and has just watched the clock, counting down the minutes until the sessions were over. However, my son likes Armin, sees the value in working with him, and generally remains engaged throughout the entire session. Again, I highly recommend Armin and Ace Tutoring.

Hollis has been tutoring my Sophmore son in Algebra 2 since late February. His approach is very formalized, he works with your child to ensure they understand the problem so that they are not simply writing down answers. I highly recommend Hollis for math tutoring. As with many service provider's I always take the time to confirm an appointment via text.

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

My daughter required intense daily tutoring to finish her correspondence class. Gary made a plan and between the private lessons and nightly homework assignments he gave her had the class wrapped up exactly as planned. My daughter had superior knowledge of the material that was reflected in her high grades.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
