We contacted Jason and in less then a minute he replied and was on his way to make the repairs needed for the heating system. Jason was fair in price, repaired during after hours and fixed the problem in ten short minutes. Thank you Jason! We're finally warm during this winter storm.

Roy was awesome. His price was very competitive and he was thorough during the process. We got a new furnace and coil to match the compressor outside. The system is working very well now and we'll definitely have him back out to continue service in the future.

Dave was super helpful in correctly diagnosing what was wrong with my heating system; after the technician sent by my home warranty company had misdiagnosed the problem. I wish they'd sent Dave in the first place. Very fairly priced.

Todd from Texas Discount Air is my hero. Our heater quit lighting, and nothing we did would fix the problem. I called a few contractors and they were pushing me to replace the entire furnace. With a seriously ill husband and daughter and no income, this was just not possible. Then Todd came to look at the furnace. He showed me what the likely cause was - a very simple fix - and walked me through everything I needed to know in order to fix the heater myself in minutes. I have not words enough nor time to express how huge this was. What a blessing! What an honest, kind, ethical man! I will never again call on any other contractor for our heating and cooling needs. I know that in the future, regardless of how big or small the job is, I can trust Todd to give me a straight answer and fair pricing for any repair.

Noble was very friendly, professional, punctual, and responsive to me before, during, and after the job was done. He came by and provided a free estimate and offered me a reasonable price for the installation of a 2.5 ton A/C unit, evaporator coil, and furnace. The installation went well and was done in a timely manner. I would highly recommend him and his team for anything HVAC related. Thanks!

Jim did a great job. His price was $1300 cheaper on replacing both the attic and outside units (everything new). What I liked about him is that he was not pushing services. Although, he assessed and pointed it out everything that needed to be fixed, at the same time, he was sharing how I could do the work myself if I wanted to save the money. I really liked that. Final work was a Trane- 4 Ton, 14 Seer Heat-Pump System with 1year warranty on labor and the 10 year parts from the Trane. It works great so far. I had a 2.5 ton old ac that even when it worked well would take hours to cool down the house. No kidding, now it cools the house from 76 to 72 in 15 minutes. After using thumbtack for a while, I realized that there are good workers that will do the job for a lot cheaper. You just need to be patient and do the estimates with all the contractors that send you messages. Oh, and please, rely on the reviews. I would definably recommend 911 AC/services !!! Great job Jim!

I can't praise the owner and his employees enough. My upstairs central a.c. unit died last August. I called other companies. Several had wait lists for an estimate. We were living downstairs because of the heat. I contacted Jun. No waiting games. He came out that day and gave me an honest opinion about my rusted system and a reasonable estimate on the replacement. The next morning (8 AM) he and several technicians we at my home ready to work. They pit down protective floor coverings from the attic stairs all the way to my front door. The rusted contractor installed unit was dismantled and removed. The outside condenser needed to be replaced due to revisions to freon since my home's construction. The copper tubing connecting the units in the attic and outside was tested and purged. Some a.c. contractors i suspect will claim that needs to replaced to pad the bill. JMJ doesn't do that. Very honest. My wife is leery of having men in our home. She was totally comfortable with the crew from this company. This house had issues with the venting. Other a.c. contractors have been here previously. None were willing to address these ventilation issues. JMJ did, at no extra charge. All upstairs bedrooms now get cold air. JMJ also replaced an old school dial style temperature control downstairs for an updated digital model. My electric bill has steeply gone down due to a new properly installed and vented system. JMJ returned the day after installing the system to check on it. I truly can't recommend JMJ enough. Prompt. Considerate. Honest. Quality workmanship. Customer service and attention to detail. Other contractors wanted to charge me for an estimate after waiting a few days. Really? Just call JMJ. Honesty with NO GAMES.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
