Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do house cleaners cost in Dallas?

The best house cleaners in Dallas charge between $75 and $140, but these prices are subject to change at any time. This price you pay will likely depend on how many bedrooms and bathrooms you need cleaned, as well as the state of your home and type of service you choose. Extra services such as window, fridge and oven cleaning may add to the cost. Some professionals in Dallas will also do your laundry, which may add to the cost as well. Make sure to tell your house cleaner how often you want your house cleaned, as some cleaners will offer a discount for repeat customers.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service in Dallas?

There are several factors to consider when searching for the best cleaning service in Dallas. For example, the city is home to many house types, which range from craftsman-style and single-family ranch homes to high-rise apartments and lofts. For that reason, you may want to look for a house cleaning service that has experience with your particular home style.

Muggy summers in Dallas can cause mold, and a good cleaning service should know how to address it. Finally, when searching for the best house cleaning service, homeowners should read trusted reviews from verified customers of the house cleaning companies in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

How much do maids or house cleaners make in Dallas?

The average annual salary of housekeepers and maids in the Dallas area is $22,900 annually, or about $11.01 per hour. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is lower than the current national average salary for maids and housekeepers, which is $25,570. Individual salaries and rates may depend on experience levels and specialties.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Premier Maid Service was amazing. Reached out to them very last minute needing a cleaning service. They were able to come out next day and did a fabulous job. We’ve already booked them for the following week.

Wasn't going to post this review but since my instant booking was cancelled without explanation--this company is a nightmare. I was quoted over $300 for an airbnb cleaning (typically take 2 hours). It was an emergency so I paid it. The guy was incredibly late so my Airbnb reached out and said he'd clean it himself and wanted a discount instead. I said okay and contacted the maid service to cancel. They said okay. Next thing I know I get an email charging me $200+ for the trip. I contacted North Dallas Maids to see what had happened and was told he had cleaned the place. I reached out to my guest, who said the maid eventually showed up, was told it was cancelled, and had no ride so waited inside begging to help. He told him he could sweep the floors and paid him $50 in cash. The guy then relayed to North Dallas Maids that he had done a full array of cleaning that had never happened. I then spoke to North Dallas Maids and sent them video of him arriving much later than he stated, the statement from the guest, and thoroughly confused why they would have cleaned the home at all despite me cancelling. I was told I'd be refunded but never received anything back. Point being, this a company that will nickel and dime you and either is committing fraud or is okay with their employees doing so.

We loved Pearla and she did such a terrific job! Everything is perfect! She worked so hard and did a wonderful job in every room! The rates for services are reasonable and I am now using World Maid Clean every two weeks. Thanks to them for making our home sparkle!

I booked a ‘deep’ clean but she only did an okay job. It was not a deep clean at all. The cleaner started 30mins late and there was lots of dirt left behind. I also put out new bed sheets but the maid put them on over the old sheets (very strange!). It wasn’t terrible but I wouldn’t recommend them at all. I’m sure Mary will write a response full of excuses, as when I told her, she said “Friday’s are busy and maybe the maid had an off day”. She was rude and defensive when I tried to explain my complaint - terrible customer service. Just not good enough for $160! I foolishly tipped in good faith before noticing all that was wrong.

Marisol thoroughly cleaned our home and the bathrooms, floors and baseboards are spotless. I’m so thankful that she could make time for a new client in such short notice, she even showed up early with flowers!! If you have a chance to hire La Divine Maid Service, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

Unfortunately, we had a horrible experience with Tidy Maids. During her third time to clean our home, my husband went to the kitchen to eat lunch so that she could clean his home office. While there, we have reason to believe that she stole an antique gold coin and his grandmother's handwritten note that went with it (it was a gift from her) out of a display case. It was there before he left and it was not there when he returned to his office as he immediately noticed it was gone. When he asked her about it, she denied it and asked if he was sure it was there that morning. When he asked her a second time to make sure, she wanted to leave. Unfortunately, we cannot prove that it was her but not another soul was in the house during that day. We have reported this information to the police. I don't feel that she can be trusted. We were both devastated that our trust was broken. We have had cleaning services in our home for over 20 years. We have never experienced any sort of trust issue prior to this.

I paid for a "deep cleaning" for a 1bd, 1.5 bath condo, which was supposed to include baseboards, fans, blinds, floors and dusting. I found the girl who came out to be personable and incredibly speedy (in and out in a little over an hour), which showed. Many surfaces were left dusty, the fan blades were still dusty, there was debris on every floor. The baseboards were sporadically cleaned (none of the ones behind doors were touched). The blinds, which are only a few months old, had streaks on them and a few strands of hair hanging from them. The downstairs bath wasn't cleaned. Every stair had dust bunnies / debris on the back (more than when she came - probably due to a faulty vac), there was significant debris under both rugs and in the closets. My bed was a mess, the kitchen counters were not wiped down and not one book was moved or dusted in this "Deep cleaning." I spent 3 hours the same night cleaning before my parents came in. I called the service the day of the cleaning several times, but nobody answered. I emailed them when I got done re-cleaning that evening and they called me back at 4pm the next day, so offer me $20 off my next cleaning. I paid $135 for someone to spend 75 minutes "cleaning," then 3 hours of my own time doing it right. The only reason I don't rate them lower is because the woman that came to my house was friendly. Not good, but pleasant. World Maid, however, is a sham, and I wouldn't want anyone else to make the same mistake I made by hiring them. PS I will add that, a week later, nobody has called me back or made any attempt to rectify this matter.
