Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Jose David Painting did a great job in removing wallpaper, texturizing the walls and painting. Their team was very professional and hardworking. They priced the job fairly and communicated well. Next time I have anything to paint, they will get my call.

We had them strip off some popcorn plaster and retexture with a trowelled finish, then paint it and paint the walls in two other rooms.

Working with Nextdoor Painting, especially their District Manager, Cameron Markey, was an excellent decision on our part. Not only was the price very reasonable, they stand behind every aspect of their work. We would definately recommend them to our family, friends, and neighbors and will use them again when we decide to paint the remainder of our home.

The folks at Spectrum Painting did an AMAZING job!! The "faces" of their company where very courteous & attentive. One of the two was ALWAYS there with requests for input & any concerns. I'll be getting my deck stained soon & they're the ones I'll call. A+++! (ps...I'm bad picture-taker but the quality & service were excellent)

Had a great experience using USA painters. Their quote included 2 coats of paint, covering/moving furniture (including a large TV that was mounted). Some other quotes I received from other companies did not include all of that. Came on time and did not have to reschedule like other companies I have used in the past. Great work, pleased with the results.

I recently purchased a home in Denton which needed to be completely repainted inside...all rooms, ceilings, door trims, and baseboards. Living out of town made it difficult for me to locate painters in Denton for this job. I found Serrano Painting on the Thumbtack website so after reading the reviews, I scheduled an appointment with them during my recent holiday trip to Denton. I felt their proposal was appropriate for the job, so I employed their company. They requested 35% down payment and the balance upon completion of the job. I gave them a personal check, and I must admit, I was a little apprehensive about whether they would show up and follow through on the job. They estimated that the job would take 3-5 days. Since my son is living in the house, he kept me informed on the painter's activities. Two painters arrived on the first day, as promised, at approximately 8:30 AM... covered all furniture, light fixtures, and flooring for protection. These guys worked until almost 6 PM...my son wasn't even sure they took a lunch break!!! They repaired all holes from curtains, TV brackets, and wall hangings before painting. If they had any concerns they would speak with my son first. The second day was like the first one and by the third day, they completed all trim and clean up by 3 PM...3 days for the entire job!!!! My son said the house looks GREAT!!! He said the guys were very professional, quiet, and worked full-speed ahead...never any wasted time. I appreciate Serrano Painting's outstanding job, and I look forward to seeing the completed job on my next trip to Denton. I'm sure the pictures I've received don't do it justice! HATS OFF TO SERRANO PAINTING FOR A JOB WELL DONE!!!

Had to fire him from the job. The painting they did had really heavy brush marks, the surface was not anywhere near prepared properly, and the paint peeled off with just the lightest of rubbing. I told him it needed to be taken down to bare wood, and also told him that I wanted 3 light coats applied in order to minimize brush marks. I have done a lot of painting in my 68 years so I know how to do it properly. But due to health constraints I was forced to hire it out. There was most of the old finish left on the cabinet doors and drawers and paint is just not going to stick under that condition. Paint will not stick to an old smooth varnished surface. That's why I told him to strip it to bare wood. The paint job looked like a kid with ADHD did it. Plus, the whole job was looking just plain sloppy and amateurish. It is a two-color scheme and there were brush marks of the dark blue smeared on the light blue areas. There were places where there were small chunks of the verneer missing and those were not filled in. There was no care taken in masking off the light blue before the dark blue was allied to the large center area of the door. If he had been a real professional where the customer satisfaction comes first, he would have asked me what he needed to do so that I would be satisfied with the work. Instead, he calls daddy about this customer giving him a hard time about the job he was doing. His father told him it needed to be stripped and primed ( which is technically correct) but he did not offer to do that. He was going to charge me $1200 for doing just the half of the cabinets that I had not gotten to before I became ill. I called around and the prices I got locally were around$1000 to do ALL of the kitchen cabinets. He almost royally screwed me on that. Before that, I hired Net's Happy Pets to train my dog. She did not even know how to teach my dog to fetch the paper on the mornings when I am hurting too bad to go get it. I needed to get her to stop barking all the time. The things she told me to do did not work. In the 4 or 5 sessions we had, the "trainer" really taught her nothing meaningful. Thing that were absolutely useless considering the goal of service dog training that I was aiming for. Wasted $250. I will not use Thumbtack anymore except for Firehouse Lawn Service. I was very pleased with their work and especially their low price. I don't recall who made the cuts on my new kitchen cabinets, but he did a good job. The problem was that he had to use my tools!!!! But as I say he did a good job of cutting of the ends of the countertops and cutting out for the sink. But the painter really got me p....d off because of the poor quality of work, running to "daddy" and not offering to make it right. He may have been doing it for ten years, but he apparently never learned how to do it right.

This job was a failure from the start. The scheduling and communication was poor. The price was probably too low which should have been a red flag. When they arrived to pressure wash, the worker they sent brought three very young children with him who were in the yard through the entire day. The work required repairing many areas of rotted soffit and fascia wood before caulk and paint. Repairing the rotted wood was part of their original quote. When the crew arrived the second day they began prepping the house for paint but did not replace any rotting wood as agreed upon in the initial quote. The crew filled the rotted wood areas with caulk. They also got caulk on areas of my bricks. Victor sold the job but was never on site to show his guys the work. He sent them in blind so I understand if the workers had no idea what to do. However, putting caulk over rotted wood that you can put your finger through is obviously cutting corners and not what I expected from a contractor with so many positive reviews. I was not comfortable proceeding with this company any further and told them I would hire another contractor to do the work properly and clean some of the mess they've made. Although it will probably cost more, it will be done right. If I did not catch them caulking the rotting wood, they would have just painted over it the following day. It makes no sense to caulk and prep wood areas that need to be replaced. Proceed with caution if you choose to work with these guys.

I can not say enough good about these guys. Sampson and his crew were affordable, efficient, (arrived on time and were willing to work as late as we would allow; estimated 3 days for the job and finished in 2), left no mess, and were incredibly nice to deal with. We were in a bit of a time bind and they were able to do exactly what we needed in a very timely manner. The finished job is FLAWLESS and beautiful. We HIGHLY recommend them and will absolutely use them for our next paint job.

Honesty, Dependable, A + Customer Service, Very Knowledgable about the trade - these are all qualities that Rory Costigan holds. I called him out to get a painting quote and when I started telling him my vision of having a wall cut out to make the room bigger he says "Oh we can do that!" Wow really? Yay! And Jay did an awesome job transforming my ugly brown brick wall into a beautiful shiny white brick wall to display my wall of art on! And Antonio's detail work was really nice as well. Rory always made sure that everything was being done right and it was so nice to not worry about things like that. Rory was a wonderful person to work with and even my Mother and Aunt (the hardest critics in remodel!) approved of him and his workmanship and that says a lot.
