I had a side garage door installed and I was extremely pleased with the results! Not only was it installed perfectly, but he also painted it too. I would have had to paint the door myself if I had chosen another contractor. He also put on the locks. The quality of work was outstanding and the price was great too!

What a great company and owner! Chris is outstanding and does very detailed work. Before leaving he made sure I was ok with every aspect of the door & operation going thru each feature. As well did a complementary inspection of the door. I highly recommend Chris & Houstons Garage Door Specialist!!! We will use his services again!

My wife and I decided to remodel both bathrooms in our house. They needed a fresh look and a complete update. Having seen the quality of work done by Tell Projects, I knew that I wanted them to do the work. I had Zach come by my house with his truck (the mobile showroom) and show my wife the many samples of flooring, tile, cabinets, and hardware. She was so impressed with Zach and the quality of his products that she agreed with me that Tell Projects was the company we wanted to do the work for us. Tell Projects gave us a 10-14 day estimate to finish the work. The workers were courteous and respectful of both our home and the three cats we have in the house. Like any remodeling project there were a couple of things that we added to the project. Both times Zach came by to inspect the issue and let us know how much the additional work would cost. They finished both rooms in 16 days due to the additional work we requested. The whole process was a very positive experience. None of the nightmare stories that you hear about remodeling. Both Zach and Ellie kept in constant contact with my wife and I. They answered our questions and made suggestions for every decision that had to be made from the tile, to the flooring, to the number of shower heads we needed. Each day the men worked quickly and cleaned up before leaving. I would recommend Tell Projects for any job you have from replacing a door to adding a room to your home. If I could use three words to describe this company they would be honest, respectful, and quality. Thank you Tell Projects and especially Zach and Ellie for two beautiful bathrooms!! Ken Robinson

Mr. Garcia did an excellent job of replacing wooden posts on my front porch/garage and bricking up an outside door. He completed the job in the time specified and matched the brick quite well. I have already asked him to complete another job for me.

Rodney came to my house and put together a basketball goal that I’ve had sitting for almost 2 years. I am very happy with his work. I still haven’t shown my son the goal, because I have it hidden in the garage but he will be VERY excited when I show him. Thanks again

Scott came out the same day as requested, he explained everything he was going to do before starting work and went over everything after finishing. I had several outlets that needed changed out in garage and some new ones added as well, needed old wires to electrical box ripped out as they were not to code and Scott added the new wires which are to code. He was very efficient and did excellent quality work! He was very fair with price. I will definitely be using Scott for future electric work A++

If I could give Rick and his crew at Finishes Unlimited six stars instead of five I would. He's truly a professional, knowledgeable, on time, aims to please and his attention to detail is outstanding. Hire him. Let me tell you about the work he did for me. I inherited a house built in the 70's. Due to unforeseen circumstances I ended up living in this fixer upper nightmare and there's only so much I can do myself. There were cracks every where (ceiling, walls, fireplace) due to foundation problems I had repaired a few years back. I had mold growing on my vaulted ceiling in my loft game room and around vents in the den/loft from years of condensation dripping. I had practically no insulation in the attic from years of squirrels frolicking up there and my ac duct work had never been changed since the 70's (the air coming out of it was not too "fresh" - it also had a bit of squirrel damage too). I also had really dark paneling in the den I wanted removed (as it turned out there was mold behind it too, gag). All of it needed to be taken care of. Previously, I had a different contractor remodel/paint two baths and one spare room and it was a disaster - paint peeling from the trim work, caulking was used instead of mud to fill cracks so it looked worse, etc. - and I had reviewed this with Rick to insure the same thing wouldn't happen. Well Rick and crew did a great job and finished almost on time. The delay was partly due to me adding a few things to the scope of work like fixing grout in my kitchen/entry, caulking around the garage, hanging new blinds (omg the harvest gold ones HAD to go), changing all the door knobs in the house, hanging new curtain rods, adjusting my garage door so it'll stay open, yadda yadda. Btw, Rick didn't even complain when he had to remove the billion staples (I exaggerate not) left by the foundation repair guys when they had hung plastic on my walls. And if I wasn't satisfied with a particular patch he would fix it till I was satisfied. At the end, since I had added scope of work, I was over the original estimate which I expected, but he was VERY fair. He only charged me materials (he had receipts) and a little bit for labor. I will definitely hire him again - I have windows to replace, exterior brickwork that needs repair, the list is endless.

I hired Felisha and Dale to do some work at my house. They refinished (repainted) the tub, tile above the tub and standing shower white. It looks great!! Practically brand new. I was very pleased. They then painted and added metallic flakes to the kitchen and bathroom counters. Appearance wise, it is a great improvement. It looks good. However, the texture is not smooth. I wish they spent more time on sanding to have a smooth feel. It just feels rough. Their communication was excellent. I was constantly being updated. Over all I am happy and will hire them again.

We just moved into a new house and Dylan has helped me with a couple of small projects. He has consistently shown up early, does quality work, and charges a fair price. I won't hesitate to hire him again in the future if needed.

Other people were absolutely nuts about the price to build a replacement garage. He was reasonable. They came in and got the job done and even dealt with the city inspector who in my opinion was nuts.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
