Debi is by far the most trustworthyhy care giver I know. I've had the honor of knowing Debi for years and I can't say enough amazing things about her. You don't come across people like this very often, so when I say it's an honor, I truly mean that will all of my heart. I've known Debi as an animal control officer as well, and I'll just say you don't come across ACO's like her at all!!!! I worked in the veterinary field for 8 years, so trust me when I say that. She will treat your pet as if they were her own and nothing less! I love Debi and respect her to the fullest!

Stephanie is a wonderful dog trainer! She helps me train my 4 month old puppy. She is very knowledgeable of dog behavior in general, and breed specific behavior, too. She teaches only positive reinforcement training techniques and is very sweet with my pup. Lola loves her, too!

Working with Howard was a great experience. Anyone looking for a caring, compassionate but firm animal lover will find it in him. He has taught us how to be alphas in our home and earn the respect of our 3 furry pets. They are all challenging in their own way but working with Howard has taught us how to read each one and to communicate effectively with them.

Wanda was wonderful with my 2 year old previously neglected foster dog and was able to teach me some very simple techniques to start training him. After one session there was already a marked difference in his behavior. I am no longer as stressed on the what or how to train him. She is prepared with treats and how to start. And she emailed me further instructions on how to work with him until our next session. I would definitely recommend her to anyone. Before her help, he was too antsy to pay attention, and I had no way to reach him. Now he makes eye contact and enjoys our training sessions.

Pamela did amazing with our dog. She was very good at explaining our dogs behavior and how to correct it. We were able to conquer basic commands and break his jumping habit. She was a pleasure to work with and very flexible with our schedule.

Tena is amazing! I had two badly behaved dogs that needed training. Tena helped me set up a list of behavioral goals for my dogs. She then provided a detailed training schedule to help accomplish those goals. After just a few weeks of weekly training sessions, my dogs can now sit, lie down, stay, and “leave it” on command. They now walk on a leash without pulling – something I was unable to accomplish on my own. Tena is affordable, knowledgeable, patient, and dependable. She teaches you how to train your dog so that you can practice commands on your own. I highly recommend Tena for any dog training needs. Cyndi L.

My dog Bruno is a young rowdy pup, very smart but also very strong willed. After attempting to watch You Tube videos and train him myself, it seemed like I was getting nowhere. I was at my wits end and discouraged. I needed serious help! I brought my Bruno to Canine perceptions after reading good reviews elsewhere and needing help with his behaviors. He went through the 6 week off leash program and graduated yesterday. 1st, I'm very happy to have him home for Christmas but the change is so noticeable! I knew he would be super excited to be home and expected bad behaviors once he left. Only one day, but the change is extreme. The Staff of Canine perceptions returned my baby not only well cared for, but well mannered! The training they gave me put everything into perspective and gave me the understanding I needed to continue Bruno's training. I could not begin to explain how grateful I am to them.

Elizabeth is such a blessing; I cannot say enough great things about her. I recently adopted a puppy, as a first time dog owner, and made the BEST decision to work with her every step of the way. She helped me since before I even adopted my puppy - she helped me find the best puppy for me and prepare my house to bring her home. After our first obedience training session, the puppy had already learned (among other things) how to sit!!! She is helping me socialize the puppy with my cats who have never been around dogs, and has taught me so much about understanding my cats behavior and body language that I had no idea about. Elizabeth is always available to answer any questions I have and is always willing to help. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone and everyone!!

Kay has been my pet sitter for many years. She is wonderful with animals, and I have cats and dogs. The thing I like best is her prior experience as a vet assistant . During a trip I was on, an emergency related to my pet's health came up and she was able to deal with it and by the time I arrived home, my pet had been taken to the vet and treated.

Beth was called to our house to help us with our rescue pit bull. She is a people person but most importantly she is knowledgeable trainer. Her philosophy on training meshed well with my family. She does not implemented dominance strategies which is unlike some other trainors here in the area. We want a family pet not an animal that fears us. I feel confident that with her helpful tips and training we will have the dog of our dreams. Our dog was abused prior to us having him. Already I see a significant improvement. I would strongly recommend her to anyone that has doggy behavior issues.

Great class. The trainer is very patient with the dogs and their owners and you can tell that she loves dogs. She gives you homework to do with your dog for the next class and if you follow her directions, you’ll see the progress with your dog. The trainer provider great info on dog behavior.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
