I am so happy with Mr. Gamez and his crew! They came in and did tape and bed and textured the whole upstairs that we have rebuilt in our 1892 farmhouse. He was very knowledgeable, professional and absolutely timely with it all. It all turned out better than I could have imagined. I highly, highly recommend him and his work. We even added two bathroom tile jobs for him and the work started the next day. Seriously satisfied with work, price, and professionalism.

Christine was a delight to work with recently while staging our condo in Vail, Colorado to prepare it to sell. We listed it last year following advice from realtor to list as is with no changes. After a 6 month listing with 3 price reductions we did not receive a single offer in spite of multiple showings. I was referred to Christine by a friend who loved her work and design style. After a walk through and consultation, Christine was able to clearly prioritize a short list of items that we needed to address to get the most bang for our buck while making a radical change in the appearance of the condo to potential buyers. We worried that we would have to spend a fortune on a complete remodel just to sell the property and barely break even. Christine encouraged us to focus on 5 things for a minimal investment to improve our showing potential. She insisted a professional deep cleaning overhaul would be essential, fresh paint throughout, new curtains were needed as an inexpensive option to replace outdated window treatments. We agreed to the changes and hired Christine to oversee the project and finish with professional staging to attract a buyer. I was amazed at how much better the condo looked with the few changes - small changes with drastic impact. Christine has a phenomenal eye for color and visual impact of space. She pulled out all of the ugly drab furniture and replaced with minimal pieces and paint that made the place feel so much bigger. She was extremely professional, considerate of our budget, and worked efficiently to help us transform and list the property. I am so pleased with her work and am blown away by what she was able to achieve in a short amount of time. We listed the property and within 2 weeks we received 2 offers. I'm certain the success is directly related to Christine and her magic.

Aisha was hands-on throughout the entire design, construction and completion of our master bathroom remodel. Her vision for our project was amazing - and she and her team turned our master bathroom into something I never imagined was possible. Perhaps most important, she was respectful of our budget. We're absolutely thrilled with the quality of the results, and we'll be hiring her again without any hesitation!

I've known Brandi for about five and a half years. She has worked on a number of projects with my husband and me, and I love working with her because she listens to my ideas yet doesn't hesitate to add some of her own. She understands that our family will be the people who live with the end product, and she excels at making "my dream" happen. She is not intimidated by strong opinions as she enjoys having solid direction. However, if I needed guidance, she was full of ideas and worked with me until I was comfortable and on board with the direction we were going without being pushy. Brandi is the only designer that I've ever worked with who has a program on her computer where she will take your room size and place the furniture in your room before you purchase it to make sure everything fits. On one job, it was extremely helpful or I would have had one chair too many and it would not have fit into the total design. Brandi worked with me on a job in Grapevine, Texas, Jaco, Costa Rica, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. In fact, I am getting ready to work with her on another job in Colleyville, Texas. Each job was completed in a timely manner and on target with budget. Another area that was very helpful in working with Brandi is that she doesn't intimidate anyone with a high-end budget. In fact, she has bargain fabrics in her work room and passes the savings along. If you can't find what you are looking for, no problem. She has many sources to find exactly what you want. She specializes in "fabulous". Brandi will always work with you until you are satisfied. In fact, she goes above and beyond what her profession might dictate. She wants you to enjoy your experience and love your completed project. In fact, when you are finished, you will realize that you have a new friend. I've tried to work with many designers, but it never worked out because they had their own agenda for a completed project and did not listen to what we expected for the end result. I don't want people coming into my home and recognize the work of a specific designer I worked with. I want our home to reflect our tastes, and Brandi is a master at making that happen. Working with Brandi was refreshing and, if you are in the market for a designer, quit looking and call her. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy the journey, June

I was negotiating a commercial lease for 1st generation retail space in McKinney, TX. In parallel, I reached out to Jason for Space Design Services i.e. Architecture Drawings, Mechanical Engineering Drawings and Structural Design. In my first call, he walked me through the process, timelines and what it takes to get it approved by the city. We signed the contract, exchanged notes on my hand drawing of the plan and met in the retail space for a walk through. I paid the advance fee in anticipation of signing the commercial lease with the landlord. Jason was prompt, worked with us to accommodate our schedule and soon delivered the first cut of the drawing. Unfortunately the lease negotiation with the landlord hit a wall and I asked Jason to put the work on hold. After 8 weeks of negotiation with the landlord, I had to drop the lease negotiation as the landlord was inflexible on lease terms. I reached out to Jason and explained the situation. This is where Jason came out really shining. He commiserated with me, said that he would fully refund the advance and I can reach out to him when I close on the retail lease elsewhere. I was very pleasantly surprised. As promised, he mailed the refund check for the full advance amount. Jason would be my go-to person for design services for his competence, professionalism and ethics.

Mary did a fantastic job with our Master bathroom remodeling. We have always dreamed of a spa-like concept for our bathroom and she delivered that vision right on target. Throughout the project, Mary was very professional and "hands on" with every detail of the project, and always cost conscious in making her suggestions to fit our budget. The project was completed in a timely manner. We couldn't be happier with the final results! Thank you Mary for making this dream come true for us!

I reached out for a home renovation I wanted to my older home. Mr. Perez promptly responded and came out to look at my house. He provided to an estimate on the project and explained the permitting process and the need to create drawings that reflected what I wanted and outline it to where I could understand it. Once we agreed on the final design he established a budget. The project involved installation of a new driveway, a sprinkler system, and landscape work to my front and back yard. His staff was kind and was able to answer all of the questions that I had throughout the process. I would highly recommend his services to anyone who is looking for an honest, and competent designer and contractor.

We hired The Home Store to provide interior design services to help update and redesign the layout of our living room and master bedroom. They also designed and renovated out kitchen and maste bathroom and did an outstanding job! They were very helpful with color and product pairing along with helping with furniture and accories for that living area and master bedroom styling. We have already hired then for our lake house and have referred them to friends. Their design showroom was extremely helpful with picking our products and pairing our colors and textures. Giacomo was patient and his experience with design and renovations helped bring the entire project together.

The Bella's team did an amazing job getting my home ready for me to sale. After the first visit and we agreed that I couldn't do all this by myself I agreed to let them do the job. They cleaned off shelves they rearranged my furniture to make the room so adorable. I was amazed at what they had done with the home. It did take all day but we knew that going into it. Jamie worked really hard to make sure we got exactly what we paid for

Kathryn helped my wife and I do an overhaul on our landscaping in the front of home. She reviewed what we liked and disliked, took into consideration some design and budget constraints, and produced some stunning handwritten design drawings. Kathryn was onsite everyday to oversee the project and kept us in the loop along the way. I am so happy we were able to work with her on this project, and look forward to the next project.

This company is amazing. They are very sweets and kind! They truly love what they do. They are honest about what they will be able to do. It is almost like being on Fixer Upper! They are just starting on our home. I'm so excited to see how it all turns out! I have no doubt it will be amazing. I met with several designers and Peekaboo was the only one that made me feel comfortable. Unlike the companies they did not look down on me or try to take advantage! They are just amazing!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
