My experience with K9 Kountry was been amazing. I came to Butch last year inquiring about obedience and protection training for my german shepherd. From the moment I left, after the first training session, my dog and I began to accomplish our training goals. Butch has been extremely generous with his time and is always available to help or answer any training questions. I couldn't ask for a better k9 companion after working with Butch. He has really helped me and my dog to develop extreme trust and responsibility to each other. I went from having a crazy puppy to a well mannered dog who I am now able to bring ANYWHERE with me. Before working with Butch, I wasted time and money with other local trainer and facilities. K9 Kountry is hands down the dog training in the DFW area!!!!!!!

she's very prompt and very reasonable, she found where my Peke had a couple ingrown nails (that my former groomer apparently "missed" which is not good) and I am very happy and thankful she took time to take proper care of our puppy... she also did the Chiu on short notice, no problem... she needed some care too. Will be calling her back often- we are very happy and our dogs are too.

We've only had a couple of sessions with Stephanie and our two French Bulldogs but we already know she was a great choice for our dog training needs. First of all - she loves what she does and it shows in her work. Stephanie is also very responsive to the behaviors that we want to change in our dogs, and is able to make the training fun. Additionally, my wife and I have busy schedules, and Stephanie is very flexible to finding training times that work for us. I highly recommend Stephanie to anyone considering training for their dogs.

I found Nancy online almost a year ago, and found myself having a hard time figuring out what dog training classes I needed for my dog Bowinkle. We had just adopted Bowinkle and he was about 6 months old and into everything and HORRIBLE at walking on a leash. When I called and spoke to Nancy I immediately felt I had made the right choice in calling her first. I didn't want to have to take Bowinkle to a class group setting and not get one-on-one attention and struggle with Bowinkle being to "interested" in the other dogs. The fact that Nancy does all visits at our house and offers many different types of service plans was a huge plus. I had no clue what we were getting into and how long we may or may not need her. We decided to sign up for a year; since then she has come every 2-3 weeks. What I like most about Bark Busters is we as dog owners are learning the correct way to train our dog(s) and become their Pack Leader. I can have as many dogs as I want from here on out and know that I can train/lead them on my own, and if I have a hard time I can call Nancy and she'll be here to assist. Nancy is a very professional and respectful person whom my pets, and myself have grown to love. I recommend her to everyone who is interested in dog training. I thought my Bowinkle was never going to grow out of his old habits and today I have a completely different dog. Thank you so much Nancy for your help, care and knowledge. Thanks, Krystin Scott

I have talked with Wanda on the phone. She was very thorough and explained her program to me. I have not had a class yet. Puppy is not with me yet. I feel she is the right trainer for me. Thank you Wanda for your time. I look forward to meeting you in a few weeks.

Tena called me in a short amount of time, and was very friendly. My particular problem falls far outside the normal purview of any dog training, as such she had not encountered this before. She was very eager to brainstorm with me over the phone giving me several ideas on how we might rectify my situation. We spoke for about twenty minutes, and concluded with her asking me to keep her updated on the progress. She seemed genuinely caring for me and my dogs, even though she hasn’t met either of us. She was happy to help, and didn’t say she needed to come and give an in home consultation, that would have cost money, which I thought was extremely generous of her. Thank you again Tena! Adam.

Brian was very good with our dog. He's much better walking on a leash and listens to us better than when he left. The only downside to training our dog this way is that it's a remote location so we have far more distractions in our neighborhood than out on the ranch. But Brian did some socialization training and left us with good tips and instructions for continuing to help our dog learn that he needs to be calm when approaches other dogs. Our dog was sad to see Brian leave.

Liz was great with us! She taught my husband and me how to use clicker training with our dogs. She arrived promptly and was professional and courteous. She explained what she did as she was doing it and helped us understand how to continue with them.

We are blown away with the progress of our rescued Border Collie puppy. The trainers at TDS Canine Solutions took our fear agressive 6-month old to a well behaved puppy in just 5 weeks. We could not be more impressed with their style and results. Loving traing that not only taught our puppy how to behave, but professional expertise that taught us how to raise this sweet boy. We are forever grateful. By the way, we've had more than 10 dogs in the past, but simply couldn't figure out how to deal with with fear agression. This team knows their stuff!

Rachel was the best. She kept me up to date with how the dogs were doing along with a video and pics. Rachel and her boyfriend were very nice and treated my dogs like their own, which is all I could ask for. She was very accommodating with our schedule for pick-up and drop-off. I felt totally relaxed leaving my dogs in her care. I will absolutely be calling her in the future for any dog sitting needs. (on a side note my 4yr daughter liked it there so much when we dropped the dogs off she kept asking to go back)

Great class. The trainer is very patient with the dogs and their owners and you can tell that she loves dogs. She gives you homework to do with your dog for the next class and if you follow her directions, you’ll see the progress with your dog. The trainer provider great info on dog behavior.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
