Hi Team! This is my first time to post. I moved to Texas in August and met Carlene Saelg. I am 53 and weighed 170lbs. My goal was to change my ways and create a new and sustaining lifestyle for myself. That starts with baby steps. One of the those steps was to start the a supplements program. I started in November with Carlene's guidance. I appreciate the difference this has made in my well being. My energy has increased, as well as my focus. I am eating cleaner and exercising daily. I now weigh 140lbs. I have lost inches going from a size 14+ to now a size 8. ( All of the new clothes that I bought for my jobs, when I arrived to Texas, now fall off of me. YEA!) It took me years to neglect my well being and gain the depressing weight. Losing this weight has been faster than I thought it would take. Patience is a virtue. Believing is trusting. Love yourself and stay the course. I have a plan. Carlene Saelg's guidance and coaching has been invaluable. I am grateful for her easy and constant presence. Support is a beautiful quality and a key to one's success. Thank you, Carlene for adding to my life.

Melissa Walker is a really good Career Coach. She has a way of melding all the information she has learned from books, real-life experiences in the corporate world, and deep experience running her own business into a wealth of fantastic information. She was patient to listen and guide my thoughts through a series of probing, insightful questions that helped me improve my Career goals. I was recently promoted and believe some of the information she provided me helped with that process. I wholeheartedly recommend Melissa as a Career Coach for anyone who is struggling with challenges or just wanting to take their career to the next level.

Pre Tiffany, I was STUCK. I had talked to two other business coaches about the same problem and they both gave very conflicting information, that didn’t get me anywhere. When trying to find my “path in business,” it seemed like anywhere I reached out for help, everyone was just repeating information they read in a blog post = not helpful. I was in that place where you’re so frustrated and confused about what to do, that you don’t do anything. Since I was doing nothing, my business wasn’t progressing either. But after one session with Tiffany, my path as a coach, my target market and how to actually find these ladies became crystal clear. A problem I had been struggling with, for what felt like forever, was solved after 24 minutes on the phone with Tiffany (really, I checked the time haha). She gave me resources that no one had mentioned before, she made it clear WHY I needed to do certain things first so that I know I’m working on the right things, and she gave me an exercise that helped me figure out my unique edge. I left our call 100% clear, instead of confused with a million questions about how I take my next step. I recommend Tiffany to any business newbie who needs some guidance.

I was at a dead end job that I had been working at for a little over 7 years, and knew it was time for a career change. It was a tough time for me, and I did not believe in myself and needed the extra motivation and coaching moving into a new career. Amanda was there for me, and was not only able to assist me with finding a new career, but was also able to build up my confidence and help me believe in myself to conquer the new challenge. Amanda was very professional, and understanding throughout the process, and I would strongly recommend her services to anyone that’s needing that extra help.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
