I got 4 reviews in about an hour on Saturday evening: $75, $80, $120, and $129. Lone Star was $80, and the only one with an appointment button for me to click on, it said "9:30am Sunday (tomorrow)". Click, done! Mike was on time, friendly, hauled the stuff out quickly... I would definitely hire him again for lawn, landscape, sprinkers, any of the stuff he does. Great experience all around.

I recommend Jeff highly. He was very conscientious about doing a great job estimating, trimming and cleaning up afterward and exceeded my expectations. He genuinely cares about what he is doing and over delivers on his commitments. i had 6 large trees badly needing the trimming as well as some large shrubs that Jeff and his crew took care of as well. The trees look great and the mess was minimal. I have extensive experience with contractors, having done full renovations on 3 homes. Without a doubt Jeff is top 5% in the world of contractors.

Good quality, timely work with a very competitive price. I had a large fencing and landscaping project and they worked with me figure out what I wanted and then knocked it out quickly and efficiently. Their pricing was better than any other quotes I got and they were honest and straightforward to deal with. Will definitely be using them in the future.

I really enjoyed working with Michael and his team. He was very professional, on time, and his team didn't leave any trash laying around. He also suggested a number of little tips (we called him in during construction) that will make things so much easier that our general contractor failed to mention. I will definitely be calling on Lushscapes for all future landscape needs and projects!

It was great working with Sean and seeing our design ideas come to life. He has a great vibe about him and delivers beautiful work at a fair price. He gave us some great ideas for a low maintenance, front landscape and treated our garden as his own. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Sean again in the future!

Manny did a fantastic job for our sod installation and helping with a bit of landscape design. Our front yard was a mess - had to be leveled, weeds removed, a dead tree removed. He went in and laid sod, weed barrier, and new stone xeriscaping. His prices were the best we found. We hired him again to lay sod in our side yard and plant a crepe myrtle in our front. He was very quick and reliable. We would recommend him!

Eli and his team were fantastic. Helped me visualize my concept. Provided and quote and worked with my schedule. The end result is a great new landscape design in my backyard. I’ll continue to use Eli and his team for future work.

Excellent job by a true professional. I have had issues with this particular sprinkler before and having a landscape professional look at it made all the difference! He identified a large root that was pressing up against the pipes and that was why I was continuing to have issues with it. Very friendly, hard working and professional.

Existing overgrown landscape removal, install new landscape with new rock borders, new plants, mulch and new grass sod with a few sprinkler moves and repairs. Jeremy and his crew did an amazing job. Jeremy is very good at keeping you involved in all parts of the project and let us pick out the plants, stone, etc. He was able to start our job quickly and took the time to get things done right. Our yard looks amazing now and we could not be more satisfied. I highly recommend them for any landscape project.

I'm very satisfied with the the quality of work of our new landscape install by Crafted. The crew that we got to know over the course of our 2 week project was professional, knowledgeable while being friendly and approachable....they took the time to explain what they were doing at different stages of the project every time I stepped on the site. We love our new patio, horizontal boarded fence and landscaping the crew installed. These are our go to guys for our future landscaping needs.

I contracted Pablo to landscape my backyar. I already had the design in mind. The job took 4.5 days. The yard looks great. It's exactly what I wanted. I even added some lawn care to the front based on the great job they did. Pablo was very accessible during the job and proactively communicated any changes. He was always on time. Love my minimal maintenance backyard and I will use this company again.

I ran a landscaping business several years ago but I'm not able to do the labor anymore because I messed up my back and I'm getting old, so I reluctantly admitted that I would have to hire someone to help me. Having been in the business I have pretty much seen it all and know how hard it is to find someone who cares about quality installation and customer service. Roberto responded with a quote within minutes of me posting my project. His quote was higher than the other 3 quotes I received but his reviews were excellent (unlike the others) and I could tell he knew what he was doing. We agreed on a firm price and he completed the project 2 days later (today). He showed up on time. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Didn't try to up-sell me on anything. Did the work exactly the way I wanted it, cleaned up everything better than he found it, and even did some extra little things for me without changing the agreed price. I wish I had known him when I had my business! I would have hired him in a second. Excellent experience from start to finish. I am already planning another project for him to do.

Steve was very timely with getting me a bid on my yard work as well as getting started on it right away! I have hired several different companies and individuals and have never had my yard look as amazing as it does now thanks to Steve! I will definitely be keeping West professional landscaping as my go to for ALL of my lawn care needs!

I really thought that it just wasn't possible to find a good landscaper in Austin. Then I met Lyle, who is awesome! He is the first landscaper I have worked with in the 20 years I have owned my home who is competent, knowledgeable, reliable, and not overpriced. I have learned over the years that it's possible for landscapers to have one or two of these attributes, but definitely not 100% of them. Lyle is also the first landscaper who has completely explained why some plants in my yard don't work in the areas they're planted in and has given me suggestions for what to do in those areas to achieve success so that my plants actually thrive instead of continually dropping dead. Lyle also put some new plants in my yard and continues to check in with me to see how they're doing. He responds promptly whenever I have questions, either by text or phone. Lyle is really professional, courteous, and has a great sense of humor, which is a bonus because some parts of my yard are no laughing matter when it comes to getting plants to grow! I hope RLC Services remains in business forever, because I will continue to be a repeat customer and won't work with any other landscaper. I highly recommend Lyle and RLC Services because there isn't a better landscaping company in Austin and the surrounding area, and believe me, I have been trying to find a good one for 20 years!!

Brad has taken care of many landscaping projects of various sizes for us over the past 10 years. We’ve always been pleased with the quality of work that he provides and will keep coming back to him, even if we move and have to start from scratch. He’s always friendly, polite and very knowledgeable. As a side note, he can also throw a fantastic crawfish boil!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
