We had millipedes crawling all over our new home and called Jony. He was able to come that day itself and treated the entire house - inside and outside. We saw results right away. I was flushing down 25-30 of those on an average day but now I'm down to maybe two or three. We were told that we may see them for a few more days. I feel like I got my sanity back thanks to Jony.

I wound up hiring 2 services through Thumbtack. Ashley was graciously flexible and willing to help me with organizing, rather than cleaning. My craft space is amazingly organized now!

I loved his work. He installed a cabinet and over the range microwave. He had to remove some of the wall beacuse I have very low ceilings and wanted a microwave over the range. It saved me space and looks really good. He responded to all my phone calls/text. He worked diligently on my project. I was so impressed; he will be working on another project for me soon. Very Pleased !!!!!

Exactly what I wanted! Hugo is a professional in every sense of the word. He understood what I wanted for the built in cabinets in our living room and exceeded my expectations in every way. He got the job done faster than expected and it fits the space perfectly. He has my highest recommendation.

The tile work is fantastic! Rodrigo puts a lot of care and pride in his tile work, and it shows. He attends to detail of laying tile right. Our floors look wonderful!!! Tiling stairs is a tricky thing to do - and we are happy with that result as well! A lot of thought went in to getting them done right for stability, longevity, as well as for aesthetics! The only thing that was not satisfactory was the clean up after the project. Even after Rodrigo's initial cleaning, the floors required multiple cleanings to get the grime up, and there was quick set on everything (baseboards, walls, door knobs, inside and outside the toilet, toilet handle, banister and poles, in the grout of unassociated tile, and more). There was no care in keeping the dust and grime from the rest of the living space. And our trash cans were filled with nearly 400 pounds of debris (after we asked them not to bc of the 50 pound limit for trash pick up). My husband had to load it and haul it to a dump site. The tiles look wonderful! Excellent craftsmanship! We just weren't anticipating the giant mess at the end of the project. Being transparent about the mess and/or offering solutions within the pricing would be an easy fix for this issue in the future. I definitely recommend Rodrigo. I am very happy with how my floors look!!! (Just be sure to iron out the details of project clean-up before getting started.)

Daniel did an excellent job of building our shaker style kitchen cabinets and arches to match the existing in our older home. He was thorough and patient as we went over design ideas that I had collected from Pintrest. He used the ideas and incorporated them into our space. He met with us several times to go over the details and timeline. He went above and beyond to help me coordinate with the other trades for our remodel. He also put me in contact with a painter and sheetrock repair to help with the job. I highly recommend Daniel and would definitely use him again for any of our carpentry needs!

Kelvin had the very difficult task of bringing an already assembled (pre-owned) Precor EFX through my front door, up my stairs and through a narrow doorway into my exercise room. He and his crewmate Rita would not give up! The angles and space to maneuver the huge piece of equipment were really tight and very difficult to manage - but with teamwork and a "never give up" attitude, this crew got it done! I am still in shock! Thank you so very much for your great attitude and your professional demeanor. I would hire you again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I were interested in building a custom loft for our ten year old daughter. Space is at a premium in our Houston home and the slanted ceilings in her room made it difficult to find anything over the counter. Philip did a fantastic job of understanding our needs and built a beautifully designed, extremely solid loft. We would highly recommend him for any custom project in your home. He was on time, on budget and very easy to work with. We wouldn't hesitate to use him again in the future.

I hired Welton to remove the popcorn textures on my bedroom walls and ceiling. He visited my place before I hired him to take a look at the work to give me a quote. He got the job done within 2-3 days, and he did an amazing job. He was very open and communicative with me and also mindful of my space. I'm very pleased with his work and will be hiring him again for future work at my place!

I would like to say that Dirty Birds did an outstanding job in helping me clean out my garage. In the beginning, my garage was stack to the ceiling with stuff that I had collected throughout the years. After the clean up, I now have enough space to park both vehicles inside garage. Dirty Birds did an excellent job in cleaning my garage from top to bottom. The garage is like brand new all over again. They were on time, very professional, and payed attention to all the details that I had requested. Their services are very reasonable, and I would definitely use their services again in the future.

They created a lovely bathroom with a beautiful tiled shower in a space that has many difficult angles on the walls and ceiling. I had three other contractors tell me they could not build a workable shower in the bathroom due to the constraints of the space. Their workmanship is excellent. They produced a very high-quality bathroom on-time and within my budget. The bathroom has truly exceeded my expectations.

Several things stood out to me regarding Mark Thornton, Jewel Stone Services. First, he called me back and responded to my texts within hours (as opposed to days with another tile person), and second, he did not make false promises as to when he could come out and do the repair. Once at the condo, he and his team were on time, pleasant to work with, realistic and Mark did a great job on a potentially difficult repair. His price was also fair considering the space challenge he faced and the extra care he had to take to make sure the repair was a solid one. I will call Jewel Stone Services again for help with my tile repairs!!

Thorough, professional, and nice. Really couldn't ask for a better cleaning service. We first met Jorge when he helped do the pre-move in cleaning for our townhouse. Since then, we've routinely invited him back to help clean the space. Jorge and his team are a great choice for any type of home. Highly recommend!

I hired Gary to replace/install 2 commercial doors on my warehouse which he did very well, but in the process I gave him a variety of other jobs that needed to be done such as hanging the ceiling in my office, fix the lock, fix some structural problems, wire lights, build a louvre box for my exhaust fan and I must say I was thouroughly impressed with his professionalism and very high quality of his work, his punctuality, and excellent communication. He is definitely a jack of all trades and I would highly recommend him to a friend or a family member. Also, it is worth mentioning that his prices are very reasonable and will not break your budget.

Tyrone is one of the fastest and most efficient electricians I've ever seen on the job. For those with puzzling electrical problems that other less experienced electricians can't figure out, Tyrone is the guy you call who can actually fix the issue. I didn't have to take his word for it when he said over 20 years experience in the industry because it shows in the quality of his work. You won't be disappointed. This guy is an expert at what he does; whether in a commercial space, factory, or a house.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
