We are very grateful to have found Chef AJ as our wedding caterer. He exemplifies culinary talent and professionalism backed with years of experience in the catering and wedding industry. He is personable and very pleasant to work with outstanding problem solving skills. We had about 180 guests for a seated dinner. My husband and I did not have a wedding planner but with the assistance, patience, and experience from Chef AJ our wedding turned out spectacular with guests raving about the food! The table settings with napkins and dinnerware were beautifully set up. Thank you Chef AJ and to your team for executing our magnificent wedding dinner! We highly recommend Red Dot Cuisine!

ALL my guest felt the need to pull me aside and tell me about how fantastic the food was at my wedding. We (my now husband and I) asked Kevin to bring both our heritages into the food and that's exactly what he did. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and we are so happy with Masons Creative Catering overall. Thank you to Kevin and your team for making our wedding a very special day.

We hired Kelli with Arcodoro after meeting several other caterers. She was well organized, personable and we felt that our wedding reception was her top priority, no matter how many other clients she may have had. She met us at our reception venue and asked us questions about what we wanted our day to be like and came up with so many ideas that we would have never thought of. From our first meeting we liked Kelli and felt very comfortable with her. She only had two months to put our reception together and never made us feel like that was an issue. She helped us come us with a menu that was varied and delicious and was beautifully presented! The chef made a fantastic pumpkin ravioli with a cream sauce that was the hit of our reception! Kelli and her staff went above and beyond in setting up our venue and making it look even more beautiful that we had imagined. They set up all of the tables from tablecloths to decor to the lighting of so many candles. Our cake table and guest book table were simply amazing and Kelli even took charge of setting up and arranging our cupcake cake because the cake vendor arrived too soon and the cake table was not ready yet. Our cake looked EXACTLY the way we wanted it, even though Kelli had only seen a picture of it one time. She was the go to person for all of our other vendors and she made us feel like we had nothing to worry about. The staff was awesome as well, and everyone with Arcodoro made sure that my bride and I were taken care of all evening! We truly felt like everything was under control and we were able to be the guests of honor at our reception. Kelli is not just a wedding caterer, she does it all...and makes it look effortless. That's the kind of service that I will recommend to everyone we know. Kelli, Thank you for everything you and your staff did to make our wedding day the best day ever for both of us! The venue looked fabulous, the food was great and all of our guests just raved about what a great time they had! We heard over and over that it was the best wedding reception they had ever been to. YOU ROCK and we can't thank you enough for going above and beyond for us and allowing us to enjoy our reception and guests without worrying about a thing! You provided us with personal service from start to finish and we won't hesitate to contact you again next time we need the level of service you offer. Mollie and Kimberlie Hines

My wedding food was a hit! Keif's dishes tasted like home-cooked meals rather than normal bland wedding food which is why I loved Keif! We had baked chicken, green beans, rice, and fish. The menu varied so everyone got a little bit of what they wanted. The price was also very cheap compared to most catering companies for 200 guests. Lastly, we paid for two extra servers/waiters and they were also not pricey compared to other catering companies. Please do not look past Keif's Catering when planning your wedding! He is the best caterer with the best attitude and best wedding food. Thank you Keif and great luck with all your future endeavors!!

Met with Chef Joy yesterday for a Fajita tasting for our upcoming wedding in a few months! She was very professional, very polite, very kind and above all....had AMAZING food! My (soon to be) husband is a VERY picky eater. Especially when it comes to rice and meat and he had zero complaints on either. We booked that day and look forward to working with Chef Joy at Laniers Catering for our wedding in a few months!

We initially wanted to hire Moon as a caterer for our wedding, but when we met for our first tasting, it was obvious that she did so much more. She was so organized and seemed to understand our vision for the wedding, so we entrusted her with doing everything from the table settings to the linens to the lighting. And, of course, the food. We held the reception in a 1920s fire station, and Moon created styling that was totally beautiful and matched the prohibition/vintage theme. When I was clueless at our meetings, she was full of ideas and helped me to brainstorm. She was very cognizant of our budget, and she asked for approval any time she considered making a purchase that we hadn't talked about. Our ceremony was fairly traditional in a church, and she honored our wishes to keep it really simple. She had lots of creative ideas, and she helped us to achieve the semi-homemade wedding we had in mind. She even made the bouquets and other floral arrangements all by herself after the florist fell through, and they were gorgeous. Moon was great at coordinating with the other people involved in the wedding (band, baker, venue) and was always professional. I knew that if I asked her to communicate with someone else for me in the planning, she would be an excellent representative. Her staff was equally professional, and guests even commented on the friendliness of her bartenders and waitstaff. And finally, the FOOD. The food was just delicious. Moon does amazing food with south Asian flair (we had chicken tikka wraps), but she also does regular-old-American comfort food (we also had amazing macaroni and cheese "balls" that she invented). Our food was kind of an eclectic mix, and she was very effective at helping us decide what missing pieces we had and making sure we had enough to feed everyone. I would recommend Moon and Momo Catering to anyone. She made the wedding planning process incredibly easy for me, which is more than any bride can hope for. Her knowledge and creativity are extensive, and her pricing is very reasonable. She will plan a beautiful event for you.

Silvana was great to work with. I loved that we could make all the arrangements via text. We hired her for a fiesta-themed wedding shower and her decorated set up was perfect. It’s great to know she can also do Italian and other cuisines. I would definitely hire her again. Thanks!

Best catering company around! We have not stopped hearing comments from our guests about how amazing our wedding food was. We couldn't be more thrilled with the quality of the service as well. The staff was very professional and served everyone quickly. Mike provided us with appetizers while we were taking photos outside and even brought some to our table too so we got plenty of food. We highly recommend the shrimp + grits as they were definitely the winner of the evening. Thanks again!!!

Tammara was hired to cater my sisters wedding. The food was amazing! We got tons of compliments from the guests. She did dessert cupcakes in a jar with the bride and grooms name on the label as a take home gift. Easy to work with and professional!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
