Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you do with a broken LCD TV?

Nationally, the average price range for TV repair is $60-$90. LCD TV repairs are one of the most common TV repair requests. A liquid crystal display (LCD) TV uses the same technology as your smartphone and most computer screens. Images are created on an LCD screen by electric currents that pass or block light through liquid crystals that are encased between two polarized, glass-like sheets. LCD TVs can be very thin and are relatively affordable, making them one of the most prevalent types of TV on the market. If you have a broken LCD TV, it can probably be repaired. Common problems that can be repaired include a blank screen, sound issues, power problems and digital connection problems. Here is one example of LCD TV repair cost:

  • 55-inch Samsung LCD TV repair: $150, including parts and labor
    • The LCD was intermittently powering up and powering off. The main circuit board was removed and replaced.

Can you fix a flat screen TV?

Yes, you can usually fix a flat screen TV. Whether you have a plasma, LED, OLED, HDR, HD or even LCD, TV repair pros can repair your TV. Flat screen TVs are expensive, and when they stop working it can make your heart stop. But TV repair technicians have advanced along with TV technology and are equipped with the proper tools and training for major and minor repairs. If your flat screen is too massive to transport, most repair companies have pickup and drop-off service. For the most common problems, TV repair pricing might range between $175 and $200 on average. Here are examples of the most common problems:

  • Power problems: The TV won’t turn on or will not stay on once started.
  • Digital problems: All connections are in place but you’re not receiving any signal.
  • Sound problems: There is no sound, the volume doesn’t respond to attempts to raise or lower it, or the volume is inconsistent.
  • Screen problems: The TV is on but there is no picture.

Is it worth it to repair a TV?

It is worth it to repair your TV if the cost of the repair is significantly cheaper than the cost of buying a new TV. The most expensive repair for a flat-screen TV is usually a cracked screen — this repair tends to cost more than a replacement TV for all but the largest screen sizes.

How much does it cost to repair a TV?

If your TV isn’t working, don’t despair. TV repair professionals can handle almost any situation, no matter how new or outdated your TV’s technology. The national average TV repair cost is $50-$90, although prices can be higher based on the type of TV and the work required. Because most TVs today are much too large to transport in an ordinary car, many companies provide transportation services for an added fee. Here are some examples of average TV repair costs for specific problems and TV models:

  • 65-inch Sony DLP TV repair cost: $275, including parts and labor.
    • Removed old light engine and bulb and installed new.
  • 42-inch Sanyo Plasma TV repair cost: $200, including parts and labor.
    • Multiple circuit boards had gone bad in the TV. Technicians installed a new Y-SUS sustain buffer board and an X main board.
  • 55-inch Samsung LCD TV repair cost: $150, including parts and labor.
    • The LCD was intermittently powering up and powering off. Replacing the main circuit board solved the problem.

How do you know when your flat-screen TV is going bad?

If your screen is displaying bars, lines, dead pixels and other abnormalities, your flat-screen TV might be going bad. It might also be dying if it won’t turn on, the sound quality is bad or the screen keeps flickering or fading.

Is it better to repair a TV or buy a new one?

The answer to this question ultimately comes down to the cost of both options. If it’s more affordable to repair your TV instead of buying a new one, consider hiring a professional to fix it. But if your TV keeps giving you issues or it’s outdated, you may want to upgrade your TV instead.

Chat with a professional and get price quotes so you can figure out which option is right for you.

How do you fix a TV with no picture but has sound?

You can troubleshoot your TV by double-checking the cable connections and devices that are connected to your TV. If you can’t find anything wrong, you may need to contact a technician to fix your TV.

What do you do when your TV turns on, but the screen is black?

If you’re able to turn your TV on, but the screen is black, you can try troubleshooting the problem. For example, you can:

  • Unplug the TV.
  • Assess the TV’s backlight.
  • Turn the power off and back on.
  • Check all of the connections, cables and cords (like the HDMI cable).

If you can’t fix the TV on your own, hire a technician to examine and repair it.

Came out and took a look at my tv. Honest and knowledgeable. Told me that taking care of the issue with my tv wouldn’t be cost effective instead of trying to charge me for an unneeded repair. I highly recommend his services. Thanks a lot.

Evgeny is a very honest and professional business man. He’s punctual and very polite when working in your home. He did trouble shooting on my TV that went out and came out a total of 3 times to get the unit fixed. I paid the initial labor/diagnostic fee and didn’t pay for the parts until the repair was completed and working. Being a pregnant mom, he also gladly helped me with other small tasks to help move/secure furniture. (Tipped him in addition) Thanks Evgeny! You saved me a lot of $

I originally reached out to him in May 2020 to repair my 75 -inch samsung TV. It was a $65 diagnostic fee. He diagnosed the problem and starts looking for the main board which is not working. He finds a main board for a reasonable price in June ($115 including labor) but by the time he's able to buy it it appears it's sold already. He finds another main board for almost double that price ($210 installed) and I'm hesitant because of the price jump. He states if I purchase the part, will come and install for $55. So I start to actually look for the part and able to find it in mid July and purchase it for $85 and ask him to come and install it. He asked for a picture of the part I guess to confirm and save himself a trip and make sure I didn't buy the right part which I get oblige.  I send a couple of follow up messages because he is not responding to set up a time to install.   He then sends me a message on July 30, 2020 that he is "shutting down his business due to COVID, please find someone else to install board". This is after 2 months of corresponding. I then look at his reviews and notice reviews as recent as August 15, 2020 (2.5 weeks after he told me he was putting his business on hold), and a total of 4 reviews after he told me he was "putting his business on hold". I message him concerning this and he does not respond. Do not let the good reviews fool you.  Very shady business tactics and I have included all the screenshots as proof.  AVOID.
