Dan is a great handy man! I had him rebuild the patio in the back and he did a great job. He cares about his work, is honest, and will let you know if there is something he can't do. I also hired Dan to replace some wood siding and some plumbing work. He does what he says he is going to do and makes sure it is done correctly. I will definitely hire him again.

Dale was wonderful! I had a patio set and and entertainment unit that needed to be assembled and he stuck with the job until it was finished (which was fabulous since the manufacturer forgot to include the hardware for the tv unit and I had to make a Home Depot run to get parts). Friendly, professional and a really nice guy. I will be using him again soon for a lighting project. :)

Josh's project was a nine piece build from IKEA. He put in eight hours of work over two days. My living and dining room look phenomenal. We had such a great experience that we are already agreed to schedule another job. I would recommend him to anyone in need of a build project.

Juan has been doing work for us for several weeks. He is multi-talented and resourceful. He has done handyman-type jobs for us such as hanging curtain rods in the house. He has planted our gardens after meticulously preparing them. He thinks ahead and suggests better ways to get things done. He has done painting on our house. Our biggest project to date has been building wooden screens for the windows on our house in a historic district. You can't buy wooden screens anymore, and you can't put up aluminum screens in our neighborhood. He has done a super job of building the screens from A to Z. We have other projects that he will be doing, including relocating and installing some windows on our house. I highly recommend Juan for his abilities and careful work, and common sense.

We hired Eric and his team for our 10'x20' concrete patio addition/pergola, they did a fantastic job. We met with a few contractors prior to Eric coming out, once he was able to meet with us, he was able to show his expertise and really made us feel comfortable. For our project, we told Eric that we wanted to get a pergola with the idea of getting a outdoor fireplace in the future. He did a great job to explaining the structural implications of the fireplace and how we can prepare for it now. Eric said that it would take about a week to get everything completed, unfortunately weather did not allow that, but his team was more than willing to make sure that the project was still completed in an ideal time. His team was very polite, easy to work with and even did a great job of keeping the yard/patio clean when they were completed. Needless to say, we will definitely be going with Eric and his team again for our fireplace and possible outdoor landscaping. If you are looking for a very respective contractor/team, you will want to go with this team. Thanks again for working with us to make sure that we got exactly what we needed.

It's hard to get someone to do small jobs like this little planter that I wanted to build as a memorial for my dog, who died recently. So the job got done quickly and I was grateful.

I had no idea how bad my drainage was until Rich arrived. From an upside down p-trap to many unnecessary pieces, causing slow draining and build up that eventually caused blockage beyond the wall. He cleared the drain and then took it upon himself to just fix it (he said it was usually it’s simple to rework, unfortunately, not in this case here). He minimized piping to just what was necessary, with all correct down flow and proper washers. Including cutting 45 from wall outlet and adding new trap adapter to make proper connection to Ptrap. Most PVC replaced with all new except a few pieces reused for under sink equipment connection. He also made recommendations for disposal use & maintenance. He did all of this, and spent nearly 3 hours, for a minimal fee. His clean up was great and the drainage is a work of art (see pic). We are truly grateful Rich showed up. I highly recommend him and will definitely use him again.

Dan is a swell guy. Interesting person to chat about and I enjoyed his thoughts on the projects I was doing to my home. I actually changed a plan of mine that I never had thought about (the placement of a door I'm building) and....well, that brought a lot of value to the work he did. Fun guy and I suggest picking his brain...he'll give honest feedback. Cheers

We hired Nayel for weekly lawn mowing services with some added extra maintenance type items in the yard. I am very impressed with their professionalism and attention to detail. They are a knowledgeable and polite father/son team that are just starting to build their business and with what my husband and I noticed, they will be successful. We have had 4 different lawn care providers over the past year and they were all sub-par doing the exact minimum amount of work (just lawn mowing) but Nayel and his father went above and beyond that to make sure other obvious items were also taken care of to make sure our yard looked great when they left. They are very responsive with calls, texts, and email and we will be referring Nayel to all of our family and friends in Dallas.

Martinez Masonry & Landscaping did a wonderful job building a stone mailbox, flower bed stone borders and repairing brickwork on the house and patio wall. Silvino is a hard worker who takes pride in his craft. We have received so many compliments on the work Silvino did and so many inquiries as to who did our mailbox and stonework. I cannot recommend Martinez highly enough. And I encourage anyone who needs masonry work to contact Martinez Masonry & Landscaping. You will not be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
