Mike came out this morning, very nice man. I had a long list we finished all but 2 items. One which will take a good hour to finish, so we rescheduled for next Thursday. I was so excited to get the little Honey Do's done. He also hung a new mirror I had bought and I knew I could not do it. Took time to show me what to look for on our water heaters. We discovered one was a 2011 model and one was a 2006 model. Which very soon will need to be replaced. I will very much keep Mike's number on hand for any future handy work that I need done. He was awesome. Very pleasant, a big plus in my book!!! Kathy Williams

Steve and Nita replaced two water heaters in my attic. They were able to schedule my job earlier than other contractors and were priced very competitively. I purchased the water heaters in advance and they picked them up for me and arrived at my home on time. The installation was performed in a matter of hours and I was happy with the quality of their work and the cleanliness of the job.

Tankless water heater install. Required 4 new circuit breakers in the main box and running new wire about 25 feet from box to closet...both located in garage. Knowledge of electrical seemed good. Price was reasonable. A little frustrating wanting to leave wire laying on ground along wall in garage when I wanted it in pvc pipe along the top of the wall...both for cleaner looks and insulation from being touched or exposed to the elements. Finally got on the same page with me laboring some. Water heater mounting in closet where previous traditional tanked unit was is neat and tidy, freeing up floor space. I paid directly to Home Depot for all materials yet somehow was left with no scraps. I am an avid DIY'r but weak on knowledge of electrical...therefore I re-use a lot of scraps. The leftover 8 guage wire was expensive and would have helped complete another repair on my list. Overall seemed a little rushed to get to next job, but made sure mine was done. I had some cleanup to do afterwards. Considering price and task completed, I am happy with the service.

Michael came out and showed me what was wrong with the hot water heater. Sadly, I had to have a new one put in. He said he would be here at 8 a.m. and was here on the dot. Showed me that some connections needed to be replaced (40 yrs old) and when the job was done, it looks fabulous.

Billy’s Services took on the job of replacing all of the water lines leading from the city meter to and throughout my house. As part of that job, his men also replaced the bathroom floor and all of the bathroom fixtures. Additionally, the drain from the kitchen sink was rerouted to allow the water to flow more directly to the sewer line. Because my hot water heater is powered by natural gas, the tank had to be replaced in order to comply with my city’s building code. Once everything was in place, the bathroom floor and walls around the bathtub were tiled and the rest of the walls painted. All of this work was scheduled for completion within a two-week period. Heavy rains, however, caused the job to last a few days longer. Overall I am extremely pleased with the work done by Billy Blankenship. His workers were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. I was given a projected cost before the work ever commenced and the job did not exceed that amount. In my opinion, Billy Blankenship is very honest and is more than willing to work with his potential customers to ensure their complete satisfaction. I would definitely recommend his service to anyone whose home is in need of plumbing and/or remodeling. The only thing I could suggest as an improvement to his company might be better communication with and among those who work for him.

Exceedingly nice group of people. It's always nice to find a company who doesn't charge you for a simple quote. Answered questions about water softeners and ended up saving me hundreds of dollars before I almost bought the wrong equipment, and that wasn't even why they were there. Work was quality, quick, and reasonably priced. Will absolutely use in the future.

Chad is amazing! Our hot water heater went out on a weekend. Chad came to our house at 8:00 on a Sunday night to replace it. He didn't charge extra for an ofter hours call and his bid was less than anyone else. But, you would never know that by his work. His work excels them all! In addition, he is very professional, punctual, and responds to Thumbtack and text messages promptly. I highly recommend him and plan to use him in the future.

Mr. Blankenship and his crew were able to come the same morning I called. They did a fantastic job and even corrected something that the AC technician from the day before didn't do which, in large part was the major reason for the water in the closet the carpet being soaked. I will certainly call him again if I need further work and would recommend him to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

I noticed the upstairs tub faucet is dripping slightly, and I assume it needs a washer replaced? However, the water in the tub/shower is control by a single faucet handle (Delta) and I believe requires a cartridge replacement, not just a washer? (I had a similar job done once in the standalone shower downstairs years ago) Problem is, I have no idea what model it is, but the handle is a plastic knob that you turn towards the left to go from cold to hot.
