Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Reviews for Killeen painters

We originally hired Reyes Painting to paint the exterior of our house in Killeen. They offered a fair quote unlike other contracts that we received estimates from. Prior to painting the exterior of the house Reyes Painting discussed color options and also pressure washed the exterior of the home to ensure that the paint went on smoothly. The original bid included painting the exterior of the house however more work was added on during the course of the project. The additional worked included fully cleaning the interior of the home so that it was move in ready. The overall work that was completed on the home was excellent. They completed all of the work in a timely matter and kept us updated as to the progress of the projects. Upon completion of the project the interior and exterior of the home looked like a brand new home. We spoke with a realtor who commented that the home looked better than some homes that were freshly built. Should we need further work completed on the house the first call will be to Reyes Painting to see when they can come by and start.

I could not be more please with the work and professionalism of the Reyes Painting and Cleaning Service. This family is amazing. I recently bought my first house and had the Reyes family paint the interior. The attention to details, being patient with me as I decided what paint color and going above and beyond what I was expecting. I can not recommend them highly enough, from start to finish they worked with me and took care of my first home like it was their home!

I’m very impressed with Tate’s & Company painting. I love the way my pergola turned out. It now looks the best it ever has since buying the home five years ago. The paint job for my child’s bedroom with an accent wall is perfect. I couldn’t be more happy with the work that was done over the past two days. I attached before and after pictures of the pergola.

I am a brand new home owner and my mind was going 1000 miles a minute with everything that comes along with that! I reached out to Pvt Ryan Painting and set up a meeting within a day or so. The entire team was very professional and friendly. They did a beautiful job on my fence in addition to correcting one side of my fence that had been painted prior to me purchasing my home. Hands down amazing service! Wish i could give 10 ⭐️. Would definitely work with them again.

I needed my kitchen painted from lime green to a nuetral color. Debbie suggested the perfect color after sending her a couple of kitchen photos. She was on time and offered additional service if I wanted her to return. She was polite and even pointed out a possible leak near the ceiling that I hadnt noticed. She came reasonably price. I would hire again.

Well first off they tried to buy the minimum paint and had to go get more , more than once. Second off they tried to finish our job in one day! And the two days we set aside for them they were trying to push out from coming the next day to coming on Friday. And Third They also tried to get away with one coat of paint! Then there have been several spots I've had to touch up, including my entryway ceiling did not get a second coat and they didn't cut in around my light. I had to do it myself. She charged me an extra $75 for adding an extra wall which was not a very big wall. The cut in lines on my accent wall were not good at all, I've had to fix that and at my ceiling on the added wall the cut in line is bad and I don't have a way to fix that. There's also a few spots showing on my black ceiling that needs to be touched up. Which I'm not sure I can reach because I have extra high ceiling. And my main color a gray which was color matched in Georgetown and that's around 30 miles away from where I live, after all I was charged they left me less than a 1/4 a cup of it. So after I got my new baseboards in I had to drive there a purchase a can which runs around $62 so I could touch up after putting them in and have some for any touch ups needed. I also found dried paint splattered on my couch upstairs luckily I was able to get it off! So I'd say good luck to you if you choose them maybe you'll have better luck!

This contractor was hired on November 13th to paint a home we are trying to sell. It is now December 18th. He STILL has not made it out. Last week alone he rescheduled 3 times. He has already been paid as well. So disappointed after reading 19 reviews. We thought we were dealing with a professional. I will only change this review if he gives a full refund. Can't refund the time we have waited but can at least refund the money.
