We are about halfway through a rather extensive remodel of our home. Murphy has been a pleasure to work with since day one. We set out with a very simple idea. We wanted a larger bathroom and a more functional bedroom. What we have received from Murphy is a complete reimagining of the back half of our home. She is creating our dream master suite! It's as if she's know us for years. Or she can read our thoughts. Murphy listens to our every idea and concern and gently guides us down this path that I feel certain leads to a magical space that we are going to enjoy for many years. We can't thank her or recommend her highly enough.

JS design prepared the complete plans and drawings for our 475 sq. ft. den and office addition in Buda. This included the floor plan, foundation, electrical and elevations. The work was timely and competent. And the fee was very reasonable for the scope of work. Our general contractor, and his engineer and subs found the drawings to be thorough and accurate. We would recommend JS Design to anyone seeking residential addition design and drawings.

I had met with a few interior designers before I met with Darla and am glad I had waited before deciding who to select. Darla was very warm, but professional. She took the time to get to know me personally, my style, and my budget. She was able to come under budget and met a quick timeline to complete my dream of a coastal bedroom. She was very flexible, working around my work schedule and communicating the way I prefer and was easiest, texting. As I showed my friends the end result, they exclaimed "that is so you ", she had nailed it! She made the final reveal special by surprising me with it at the end of a long work day. I highly recommend Darla!

Nick and Zach did our bathroom backsplash, replaced a water damaged bathroom window sill, installed crown moulding in our bath and office, and repaired some damaged attic trusses. They did a great job on everything, especially the crown moulding. In fact I should probably have them come back and re-do all of the crown moulding that I did myself downstairs, since it is not nearly to their level of craftsmanship.

Hanniel is a ton of fun to work with! She mad what my husband and I thought was going to be a stressful project into a fun one. We really enjoyed working with her to design our bland place. She not only found great furniture pieces, she also made sure it was a good deal and affordable. She was very sensitive to our tight budget. In the end, she did an amazing job and went above and beyond our expectations. Not only does our home look AMAZING, it's also super comfortable and cozy. We now love coming to our beautiful home. Using Hanniel as our interior designer was the best decision! I recommend her without hesitation. Thanks Hanniel!

Our new backyard was clay and bedrock. Drainage was a major problem. We spoke with several 'designers' who offered generic suggestions without utilizing the unique features of the yard. None had solid ideas on drainage. TruCare helped us get the builder to understand how a proper french drain is built and resolve other drainage problem areas. TruCare listened to our thoughts, provided creative solutions, and built a backyard we can enjoy for years.

Murray has been great over the past year. I am doing my first complete house overhaul and he has been readily available and has assisted me after the original contacted designed work at a reasonable hourly rate whenever I needed him (even after his initial main contract work was done). His architect drawings for the entire new house (while integrating parts of the existing house into the design) were very well thought out and thorough. And he worked with me and the engineers to get the few change requests and the drawing ready for the city permit submittal. I have been very happy with Murray's work, attention to detail, and availability and would highly recommend him to others for both big or small jobs. - Jimmy from South Austin-

I instantly knew when I looked at Sara’s website that she was the designer for me. She was great to talk to, listened to my story and my vision, and I felt that we would make a strong team. I love the fact that she is willing to work within whatever budget I have in order to get the project completed. I’m very optimistic about our success in creating an environment that will be both functional and deeply appealing, encouraging return patronage because of the impact of the complete experience. We’re gonna do something really wonderful together in this space!

Bhavani was hired to help refurbish an old home. She drove from Austin to Houston to see the home, take measurements. She then provided drawings for demo work, lighting, kitchen redesign, paint colors. She continued to answer questions throughout the process and provide additional drawings for items that came up. The house is looking great, already have some buyers and renters asking about it and its still not finished.

My husband and I had been looking for an architect for months. I had searched thousands of stock floorplans and just couldn't find one that matched our needs. Victor is a well informed experienced professional. He listened to our needs and offered his advice when we had doubts. When we saw the first rendering of our floorplan and the home exterior I was brought to tears. My dream had finally come to fruition. We are almost finished with the plans and can't wait to start construction. Thank you Victor.

Toni McWilliams’ insight into property buyers led to the successful sale of my condo. Within a few hours of her arrival, Toni had transformed my condo into exactly what an investor in the Roaring Fork Valley looks for. She started by identifying key living spaces and arranged the existing furniture to best enhance the space’s features. With a few extra touches of her own, my condo went from looking rather small and lived-in to very polished and chic. I was impressed by Toni’s knowledge of the real estate market, her undeniable talent for interior design, and her professional, positive attitude. I sought Toni when I knew I needed every edge I could find to sell my condo during a time when the market was saturated. Shortly thereafter, my condo sold for over 10% higher than comparable units within my building. She provided me with a huge return on investment and I simply can't thank her enough.

Victoria helped me with color choices (there is not just one 'white'), moving and placing art, moving and removing furniture for better flow and usability, and she really helped me figure out how I wanted the rooms to FEEL. Oh yes, ORGANIZATION!! She helped maximize and better utilize my kitchen spaces, pantry and drawers and we created a coffe/tea bar that is now a welcoming useable area.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
