All the great reviews are there for a reason. Really nice work (on the drywall repairs) and professional. They left my place as though they were never there.

I hired Brothers to do a large drywall repair job in my garage including the removal of the old popcorn ceiling, retexturing ceiling and walls with the knock down texture and painting the entire garage and two standard access doors (not the garage doors). There were many large holes in the ceiling and some on the walls that were repaired also. Brothers completed the job in two phases because I had an epoxy floor installed after the initial drywall work was done, then they returned to complete some additional minor repairs and paint. I could not be happier with the results. Santos Chavez and his crew were very professional and take a great deal of pride in their work. Their attention to detail is stellar! I will be calling them again for future jobs. Good drywall work is an art that requires skill to look professionally done and these guys really know what they're doing.

Ryan and crew were more than I could have hoped for. I provided exacting specs for the job I wanted done, and they delivered — even suggesting improvements along the way to yield an even better end result than I could have hoped for. They removed a pass-thru wall air conditioner for me, reinforced the structure once the hole was wide open, added insulation, and then covered the exterior with OSB plywood and hardie lap siding and painted, per spec. Interior, they patched with drywall, taped and floated, then painted. Great work, will use them again.

Really enjoyed working with David and his team, he's honest, reliable, and puts in the extra effort to get the details right. We used him first for drywall floating/texturing and are hiring him for a number of other jobs on our home.

My project was installing double doors in an opening that had to be reconfigured in size and required installation of a header, drywall work, texture, painting, installation of the prehung double doors and door hardware. Sonny was responsive to messages via Thumbtack and also while doing the work, checking in with me throughout the project to make sure it was to my satisfaction at various points. His rate was reasonable and he was able to complete the work in a timely manner. He was respectful and courteous. I'm very pleased with the result and would recommend him on this type of project without reservation.

Mr. Leon responded quickly and came out the same day (late Saturday evening) to stop the water leak. We scheduled a follow-up visit to address the water damage (replace drywall, etc.), giving it some time to dry. Mr. Leon was punctual, professional, neat and provided outstanding quality, at very reasonable rates. I will absolutely keep his number for any future electrical, plumbing and carpentry needs.

Jesse of Modern Handyman expertly completed several repairs for us prior to putting our house on the market last week, and I could not be more pleased. He fixed several nail pops in our drywall, re-textured and repainted the walls and ceilings beautifully, and repaired other areas where chairs had scratched our drywall. He even fixed a couple areas I hadn't seen. Jesse freshly painted our front and back doors and removed two baby gates for us, filling in, texturing, and repainting the areas where they were attached to our stairwell and walls. All of his work was excellent, and our house looked excellent for the real estate photos. I needed his help quickly, and he came out to give a quote the same day. He was able to start the work the next business day. He was diligent and hard working, returned messages promptly, was on time and stayed all day to get the work done -- I barely saw him take a break! He contacted me a few days later to make sure everything was still looking okay (it was, of course). His pricing was very reasonable, and I felt he deserved more than he asked -- I paid him more than the bill. Jesse even humored my curious 3-year-old son who kept "checking in" on him and asking him what he was doing. I felt very safe with him in my home around my two little kids, even with my husband gone with the Army. I will hire Jesse again for any other repairs we need prior to moving, I've recommended Modern Handyman to several friends since then, and recommend him to you as well.

WE LOVE BUD! Bud and his team completed a kitchen, bath, and living/dining area remodel for us and we couldn't be more pleased with his beautiful work. He custom built additional kitchen cabinets on-site. The cabinets look stunning with our existing cabinets which he also stripped, hand sanded and painted . His designs were well thought out which provided us with the maximum use of space for storage for storage. (which we really needed) The bathroom looks like a spa! The tile work is gorgeous! Bud brilliantly thought of a way to build us an extra master bedroom closet which he finished in two days. Great job! Always on time, very knowledgeable and VERY TRUSTWORTHY IN YOUR HOME!!! Darn friendly too I might add!

Eduardo responded immediately to our request for a quote, showed up when he said he would, and carefully reviewed our project. He gave us a bid that was very reasonable and was able to start the next day. It was a two day job. He showed up each morning on time and was very professional: from covering our floors and protecting all the surrounding areas to complete spotless cleanup. The result was flawless patches where needed, to perfect texture matching to surrounding areas. I would highly recommend him for anyone who needs drywall work of any kind.

Berumen Salas Drywall was outstanding. We live in an 85 year old home in Seguin and we had some very outdated, dilapidated, heavy floor-to ceiling cabinets that were very sturdily attached to an entire wall of our kitchen that needed to be removed, and then we needed clean, fresh drywall hung where the cabinets used to be. Berumen Salas Drywall did that perfectly. They showed up on the day they said they would show up on. They finished when they said they would finish. They were very polite and friendly and professional. Our four dogs don't really like anyone but even our dogs liked them and were wagging their tails when they came. I would (and will) hire them again for my drywall needs. Outstanding service, value, and professionalism. Thank you.

Robert and his team are amazing! He is my GO-TO when it comes to any construction in my house, big and small! Projects at my house include: bathroom remodel, drywall, painting, roof repair, fence building, electrical updates, plumbing, tiling, kitchen remodel, door repair/hanging, outdoor fireplace, window install, rock work, you name it, Robert and his team can do it! He is on my speed dial. Seriously. I come up with crazy ideas and we brainstorm on the best way to get it done. He is very respectful to me and my ideas as well as my house. His team is honest and fun. I am a woman and never have they made me feel uncomfortable or made me feel like I don't know what I am talking about. Again, good people and can't say enough nice things about them. I just wish I could win the lottery so he can make all my home project ideas a reality!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
