Juan did an incredible job! He is very professional and provides quality service. I always worry about the quality of service, especially when it comes to construction in my home, however I could tell Juan knows what he is doing and he doesn't take short cuts. He does the job thoroughly and EFFICIENTLY. I got two ceiling fans installed on my patio, beforehand I joked with my husband that I don't want the fans to wobble since they drop down, but they are sturdy and steadfast, as Juan put them on high as soon as he finished and I've had them going all day. I read the reviews before I booked JLD Services and I want to tell you to go ahead and book if you want great handiwork that you will be satisfied with. 😃

I had Blast build a custom accent wall piece for our Master bedroom. I had the pattern drawn out in Autocad with dimensions and angles to help aid the work being done. Blast did a great job turning my design on paper, to a work of art on our wall. My wife and I were very happy with his work. I would use his services again on my next project.

I had all but wonderful experience with PES construction on their roofing job. The quote was detailed with all the explanation of what to expect and what's the pricing of the labor and materials used(breaking down to what materials used further) and the men were really punctual and worked all day and finished the whole roof in 2 days. I am definitely recommending them to my friends. True professionals with neat job.

John Guillot, the owner of Atlas Construction and Remodeling, is a very friendly guy who is courteous, kind and professional. All attributes consumers like me look for when hiring professional help around the house. It is also a huge plus that Mr. Guillot is very knowledgeable and does amazing work too. I hired Mr. Guillot to do a welding job to my favorite chair. My chair is like new again! Without reservation, I highly recommend the services of Atlas Construction and Remodeling. We are using Atlas Construction and Remodeling for our 'bucket list' of work starting with painting. Thank you, -Tim Tim Kightlinger BSN, RN League City, Texas 77573

Our house flooded in the May 2015 Houston flood and we chose Precision Construction to do the water damage repairs. One word - AMAZING. Tom, the owner, gave a very detailed and easy to read quote/bid for work and said he had experience dealing with insurance and would help us through that. Throughout the renovation, Tom was always available to answer questions we had about the house and how things were going. He gave us amazing recommendations on where to buy materials such as granite countertops, brick for our exterior, and our flooring. It was great to have somewhere other than Lowes to go to for our material needs! Our insurance company tried to low ball us by paying $x/sqft for flooring and sheet rock, and Tom helped get us more money by educating us on the industry standard pricing for work and helped us be prepared to ask for more from insurance. We did, and it worked! The timeline for work was given in an honest and straightforward manner. Tom is very organized and was able to keep his crews on our projected timeline (which is a rarity with construction projects!) We had such a positive experience that if our house ever floods again, we will go with Precision Construction again no questions asked.

Fantastic job! My family and I are so pleased with the work Immediate Painting did to our home! I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a painting company. A couple of the other companies were basically construction companies trying to subcontract that work out for cheap. Eric and his team specialize in painting only and it showed. Glad I found them on Thumbtack!

Houston Flooring and Remodeling (HFR) recently completed a shower re-build for me. I am a practicing architect, so I am somewhat familiar with the entire construction process. Overall, HFR did a very good job on my project. Katrina showed up when she said she would, followed up when she said she would, and had her crew on site without any missed days. You would be surprised how rare that is in the residential contracting world. Based on my experience, I would recommend Katrina and HFR to others considering them for a small to moderate renovation project. I am also very satisfied with the quality of the work they did, and actually had nothing for the punch list - even though I am very picky and demanding in that respect. Good job HFR!

Did great work and price was honest and reasonable. They did the tile work for the dinning room floor, bathroom floor, and bathtub surround. In addition, they replaced the bathroom vanity, painted the kitchen cabinets, and applied epoxy to the kitchen's laminate counter. Levi was responsive to my texts and phone calls, and didn't have any problem with the additional requests made once construction started.

I am more than pleased with the master bathroom remodel that Twelve/12 created for me. The two owners of the company, Oliver and Jeremy, are a dynamic duo who successfully guided the project from planning to completion. Oliver met with me several times at the planning stage to to determine exactly what my vision was. His knowledge, patience, and understanding helped us create a workable plan within my budget that included all the features I wanted plus some touches that I hadn't even thought of. Then Jeremy took charge of the construction and brought the plan to life. He is a perfectionist and ensured that every detail of the work was done to the highest standards. We established a project schedule and they stuck to it. On the day that the countertop crew was in my driveway, cutting the quartz to fit, it began raining heavily. Rather than lose a day, Jeremy made a quick run to Walmart, purchased a canopy, erected it on the driveway to protect them and their saws and the work continued. The beauty and functionality of the final product exceeded my expectations and the project cost was very reasonable for the quality of the work. I highly recommend them for any remodeling project you may be considering.

I had a large portion of my dining room that caved in due to water entering through a vent. I was on a budget, and they truly helped me come up with a solution and worked with my price range. They were punctual, cleaned up after themselves, and were so kind! They did a beautiful job, and even repaired a portion of the roof for good measure. I plan to use them again and again for future house projects!

Working with TNT Construction (Tony Salazar) was a pleasure. His team performed everything we discussed throughout the life of the project. Tony is very professional and easy to get along with. The foundation work, sidewalks and drainage were all constructed as designed and ahead of schedule. They even worked at night to avoid the possibility of rain issues the following day. They also made recommendations as the project progressed that gave me alternative ideas. All in all, a good experience and I will use them again on any future concrete projects.

Xclusive Residential Construction is amazing! I posted my request for a concrete job on thumbtack and within 10 minutes i had an email from the owner Jeffery. Within a day he came out to speak with my husband and I and provided us with a quote. Out of 7 different companies he was the only person to mention placing rebar into our existing patio slab so that the concrete would last longer and not separate. Once we were ready to have this project completed Jeffery and his crew were at our house ready to go in two days! The entire crew was very professional and timely. Within Two days they had dug out all of the dirt, placed rebar down and poured concrete! We are beyond excited to be able to use our new patio space this summer and wouldn't have been able to do it without Exclusive Residential Construction and Remodeling. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who is needing concrete or any other type of home renovation.

I had the unusual request of constructing a wooden platform between the front row and middle row of my SUV for my greyhound to travel. I contacted thumbtack and was fortunate enough to hire Reza Kuhi. Reza took ownership of my problem, took the time to go with me and advise me in what material were best for my project. He took the time to study and re-measure and make sure the end product was what I needed. Even though the project was time consuming and difficult to archive, his price was more than fair. He is a people person and willing to do whatever it takes to please the customer. I have kept his card and will not hesitate to contract him again. He did a great job!

I hired R.S.G. to paint the exterior of my house and they did a great job. Ricardo gave me a great offer and was very responsive to the questions I had. There were heavy rains in my area for almost a week, the first day that showed clear sky's R.S.G. came that day early in the morning to start work. I will definitely hire them again for any painting projects I have.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
