Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I could have chosen all five items above. This electrician gave me by far the best price of all the electricians I contacted. He came the next day, and he did the repairs quickly. He and his assistant were friendly and informative. I will definitely call him the next time I have electrical problems.

Alex was a great electrician and did a phenomenal job in getting the work completed efficiently and quick. While walking through the house, I showed him a concern we had in another room and he was able to resolve and address it.

Texas Electric and Junk Removal, did not and has not completed agreed to repairs, did not return to complete switching out the fan switch, did not return to replace their damage switch cover plate, and use improper electrician safety that has resulted in outlets not working in the home that were working. Because of this non-completion, error filed electrical service, breech of verbal contract, false free estimate service, and after giving Texas Electric and Junk Removal the opportunity to return and complete the service, which they did not, we placed as stop payment on the check. It is incredulous that they would say we did not pay them. The matter is closed. We will not be using Thumbtack, or any of its vendors after this ordeal. Please review our entire conversation with Texas Electric and Junk Removal below: "Friday, Feb 26th electrical damage in home for winter storm. Lights flickering electric/gas fireplace not working, etc. 3:40 AM Good morning, Can you please send me information so I can give you an accurate price on the work that needs to be done. Please feel free to contact me directly. Thank you, Texas Electrical & Junk Removal (346) 773-5890 Can you provide your address & contact # to (346) 773-5890 so I can get you on schedule to come troubleshoot your electrical issue? Thank you, Texas Electrical & Junk Removal 8:18 AM Ernest Polk, 3604 Parkside Dr., Pearland, TX 77584 available today through Tuesday 9AM-2PM phone 281-489-2690 cell 504-251-8779 Breakers may need to be changed out, after winter storm, lights in bedrooms flicker when another switch is turn on. 10:03 AM I can come now. I am actually 22 minutes from you. 2:15 PM Hi New, I'd really appreciate you taking a few minutes to write us a 5 star review of my work that I can include on my Thumbtack profile. Reviews are important because they help me get new customers. Thanks in advance! Please leave a review 5:28 PM Saturday, Feb 27th When you come to replace the fan switch, bring a new 3 plug plate cover. You cracked the one you put back. Please confirm when you will be back. Thank you for your help. 4:20 AM Sunday, Feb 28th Didn’t want to pay for the troubleshooting at 1st 11:41 AM Monday, Mar 1st You were given a check for $100.00. If I did not want to pay you, you would not have received a check. If you do not make the additional repair and replace the 3 plug plate cover you damaged, you can destroy the check and we will be done. The fact is I asked you to give an estimate to change out the breakers on the electric panel. You decided to go into the wall. Then you decided to make repairs without consulting me, and then after going into the bedroom multiple times you said it was the light bulbs on the fan which you could have said from the beginning. So I need to know if you are going to send the invoice and finish the service you agreed to for the $100 payment to change out of the fan switch and replace the switch plate cover you damaged. I need to know before 8:45AM, 3-1-2021 your decision to either destroy the $100 check, or send an invoice and come back out to finish the job." Because of the aforementioned, we are done with Thumbtack, Texas Electrical and Junk Removal, and any vendor represented by Thumbtack services. The rating for both companies are the poorest rating that could possibly be given which is never use again and never recommend anyone else uses both companies. Update 3-17-21 Company contacted me to resolve the matter saying they will not fix damages they caused, will not fix outlet they disconnected, and will place a lien on the house for the work they did not do. Therefore we will have to go to court counter sue them for fraud and libel. We look forward to showing the broken 3 panel outlet cover, video of the outlets that now do not work, and other proof in court. Do not use Texas Electrical and Junk or Thumbtack.
