Ben has been my son's private instructor for 3 years and has been a great influence for my son as well as for his growth and development as a percussionist. Ben is patient and positive. My son's comment when I asked how is Mr. Pham as an instructor: "He treats me with respect and has very high expectations for me but it's all worth it in the end". With Ben's help, my son made All-Region band this past year and has made the marching band drum line. My son had ZERO experience in music and wouldn't have achieved these accomplishments without the support and guidance from Ben.
My son took percussion lessons from David Nathan. My son describes him as a solid teacher with a good ear, patience, and good direction. As a parent, I appreciated David's communication -- he would send regular emails. I know he would do a regular showcase of all his students, which was also a lovely thing.
Chris is an awesome drum instructor. As a drummer myself, I can attest to the fact that he knows his stuff. He instructed my son, and was thorough, and professional. He was on time, and would even go long if necessary. He is great with a 7 yr old kid, and able to get the best out of someone with that attention span! We plan to have him teach again when our schedule permits.
A friend of mine referred me to Ross for drum lessons for my 13 year old son about a year ago and we have never looked back! My son has some challenging behaviors and takes longer than typical kids to learn new things but he is totally rocking out with Ross. Ross is more than just a music teacher, his passion for music and its benefits is obvious as well as his patience and understanding. He has a natural ability to relate to the needs of each student and teach at their level while pushing them forward at the right pace. My son loves learning drums and I love watching his confidence grow. I’m just thankful that we found Ross…Also, his student showcases are a blast!
Sherry is an exceptional being with such a wonderful accepting attitude. She is so supportive in all aspects as I have taken lessons, purchased a drum and had various maintenance drum repairs. I highly recommend any interactions with Drumz and Sherry, as we are so very lucky to have this store in our town! I love all the different percussion instruments we are offered to play at the end of each class too.
My previous drum teacher moved and I found myself in the unfortunate position of looking for someone new. For me it's difficult as I'm looking for someone that can teach me the way I need to learn. I don't respond well to the old-fashioned rudiments on a practice pad routine, so I really dreaded this process. I'm also looking for someone that has a feel for the drummers I admire so they can better understand how my thought process works. For me, finding the right teacher is more than just someone that's a proficient player and can explain the lesson. It's really a relationship...the right teacher can understand where you're coming from and be able to help you achieve your goals, understand your strengths and weaknesses and connect with you in musical way. I probably read through the profile of every drum teacher in Austin, but after receiving a message from Pedro on Thumbtack, I checked out his website and I could tell somehow he was different than the other teachers I'd researched. After my first hour lesson today, I know I'm going to learn more from him than anyone I've worked with before. Pedro has a really great way about him and is genuinely interested in making you a better player. In my introductory lesson, he walked me through something I thought would take some time to get worked out but he had me playing it by the end of the hour. He's also encouraging me to work on some form issues by way of explaining why it's important and why it will make me a better player. I can really embrace logic like that as a lot of teachers will only tell you to do something this way or that way...Pedro will walk you through the process and how it can and will improve your playing. I'm probably not his typical student, but I get the feeling he teaches a fair amount of adults like me, as well as beginners of all ages. I really fought taking lesson for a long time, but if I'd found Pedro years ago, I know I would be an infinitely better player at this point in my life. If you're looking for an enthusiastic, down to earth teacher that will teach in the way you need to learn, Pedro is your guy. Already looking forward to my next lesson!
I've worked with Ed on and off over the last few years. As a player, he is a total pro, able to deliver at a high level across many styles. What I really love about playing with Ed is that he is also a great person - always a positive attitude, punctual and prepared. Ed is my first call when I need a drummer, for both live and studio work. He has also given some drum lessons to my son, providing not just style and technique, but also some great philosophy and guidance about music in general.
I'm very pleased that my nine year old daughter is enjoying her soon to be second year with Franklin Music Academy. Most of all I would like to thank JP for all of the encouragement and confidence he has given her. I appreciated all of the hard work he puts into making piano lessons fun and interesting for my daugther.
I've been taking drum lessons from John for a few years now and can't say enough good things about the experience. He's patient, kind, supportive and has brought things out in my playing that I never knew were possible.
Sidney seems to be doing very well and making great progress with his drum lessons. We are very content with the work Mr. Pete is doing.
One of the great things about Taylor teaching our son is his wide range of percussion knowledge. Whether he wants to work on marimaba, drumline, drum set or any number of other instruments, Taylor has the experience and knowledge to help him learn.
Patrick's first trip to our home was fantastic. Our son learned quite a bit and was able to play some basic riffs after only his first lesson. Great personality and very patient with our son. We would recommend him to others.
We had Matt as a teacher for three years, for our children. He was so talented and such a blessing. I am quit convinced that Matt would be able to successfully take on any challenge he is given.
Terry is a very kind, polite and professional musician. He arranged to come and meet my son for a lesson. I appreciated his candor and professionalism in letting us know that he would not be able to meet my son's particular lesson needs.
I offer private drum and percussion lessons for all ages and levels of players. I have been a very active member of Austin's teaching, performing, and recording community for many years, including several years as assistant director/lead drum teacher at The School of Rock -- formerly Paul Green SOR. Along with performing with several notable artists from around Texas, I also have a very strong rudimental/marching drum corp-style background that enables me to teach aspiring students of school band programs. Thank you for your consideration.
Cameron Carbone (@carbonedrums) is an educator and performer in the Austin, TX area with a B.A. degree in Music Education from Texas Christian University. He has performed nationally and internationally, and also teaches around his touring schedule. He believes in the importance behind convenient lessons and loves helping others overcome music-related challenges!
I look at getting you confident on the drums ASAP. I don't read or teach reading music per say. Although we will occasionally look at some drum notation, charts and rudiments, it's not a focal point, but more a tool to help explain a concept or idea. For more advanced players, I'm not going to tell you what you are doing is "right" or "wrong" and typically won't mess with your self-taught or learned technique unless I feel it will prevent injury or improve your playing. For the stronger players I will try to stump you with new concepts and styles you probably wouldn't have come in contact with playing in your rock band. These ideas will strengthen your overall playing and adaptability. My goal is to get you to a place where you can teach yourself.
Beginner, intermediate and advanced students are welcome. I have a studio in South Austin. Since the age of 15, I have been performing. I have played in rock, jazz, pop, Zydeco, cover, funk and experimental projects. As a top drummer for hire in town, I'm the guy you call on short notice when your drummer can't make it for some reason or quits. I also play in a classic rock band and in a variety band. I have extensive stage experience as well as studio experience. I am specifically interested in students who are prepared to take their abilities and stage dynamics to the next level. I teach from the perspective that some musicians have a lot to say (dynamics and phrasing) and some musicians have a large vocabulary (many chops). We will work on what you have to express and say and how to say it through the most passionate and powerful of instruments. Also, I have worked for a Fortune 500 company and have been in the business world for numerous years as a headhunter and consultant. You can rely on a conscientious and professional experience. I also have numerous years of experience as an adult educator and a coach. Rates are $35 per hour at my studio near Riverside Dr. and Pleasant Valley. I love drums, and I love teaching. Call me! Let's set your free first lesson.
I am a certified teacher to tutor science or math; guitar, bass, or drums; or pool/billiards or tennis any day of the week.
I teach all styles of music, from beginners to advance. I have been teaching music for over 12 years and playing for over 25 years. To check out my bio and prices, go to my website.
I teach drums/percussion of all genres (Latin, funk, hip hop, rock, experimental, fusion, reggae, country, metal, progressive, and creative). I also teach songwriting/ lyric writing. I have a unique approach to teaching/coaching. I am very patient, creative, knowledgable, open minded, fun, and some what talented ;). I want to provide lessons that, at some point, head in a creative direction and, ideally, grow our relationship towards a place where we can inspire each other! I am a strong believer in the fact that everyone is creative, and I will help you find your voice, and use it. Of all these, the main characteristic that I pride myself on as a coach is creativity. I have always practiced different and creative approaches to my students, which is mutually beneficial for both the teacher and student. It benefits the student because I, as the teacher, don't go off a "script" so to say, yet I have fun with it and take a real interest in the progress of the student. It also personalizes the lessons for the student so they can learn at their own pace and get what they want out of lessons while also obtaining an entire wealth of knowledge they didn't previously know existed, and it keeps the student invested and consistently interested in the instrument (because we all know how humdrum music lessons CAN be). I will learn the way you learn, and I will speak your language, and I will be creating ways that constantly improve your skills, increase your knowledge, and keep you constantly curious and full of wonder about the instrument. Who knows, you could revolutionize the instrument for the rest of time. It benefits the teacher in that I am practicing my creativity by seeing the student as a work of art to build, rather than just another person taking lessons. It also benefits the teacher by obtaining faster and more long lasting and rooted results, which is the most rewarding aspect of teaching in my opinion. I will teach you the basics and build a foundation. This will start with the different ways to grip your stick that is most comfortable to you. Then I will teach you rudiments, then beats, then fills and when to and when not to use them. I will teach you how to use space and how to use proper restraint to get the most out of your playing. I will show you all the tricks that will REALLY entertain. I will teach you how to flow through different time signatures. I will teach you 4 way coordination (every limb is playing a different rhythm). I will teach you how to be a player that gets asked to play the most gigs. I will teach you how to maintain your set and how to properly tune it. I will teach you how to get different tones and different sounds out of your drums. I will teach you the ins and outs of being a professional drummer. I will teach you how to improv with other players, and I will bring other players in for you to practice it with. But MAINLY, I will show you the beauty of this wild instrument and I will teach you how to have FUN playing.
