Elise P. says, "Wow! Jackson came into our chaos and brought our family peace. We had just purchased our 1950’s home 3 months prior and pretty much the day we moved in we realized the house was in much worse condition than we expected. In fact, by the time Gayle Renovating took over (from a inexperience handyman who made things even worse than before) our house was almost doomed to flood from bursting pipes, burn down from sparking light fixtures, or cave in from the leaking roof at just about any moment!! We were living a nightmare, but didn’t want to give up on a home we had worked so hard to get for our family either. Jackson managed our emergencies while working with us to determine our short term and long term goals for updating the house. He has creative ideas for design, an eye for detail, and patience to listen to concerns I brought up. He is respectful, responsible and makes sure his team is too. Our home is not only now safe enough for us and our children, but incredibly beautiful as well. I’m grateful we found Gayle Renovating when we did and we will definitely use them again should have any more home improvement needs."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

We recently needed a deck built on the back of my dad's home to replace a cement patio. I went to Thumtack, which of late I always do, and found Dillon and All Aboard Decks. He was congenial and straight forward. I also took three other bids for the same job. Most of them were more costly than Dillon's, put what put me off of all of them was their slow response and also their apparent need to explain to me why their price was so high. Dillon arrived on site right on time and he and his crew had a brand new cedar deck built in TWO DAYS! This included railing all around the deck surface and steps with a handrail. It is difficult to even see the screws used. My father, for whom the deck was built kept saying, over and over, "This is not a deck, it's a masterpiece!" My dad is not easily pleased and especially when he is spending money. The highest praise came while he was sitting on his new deck and looking around and said; the deck was "Worth every penny!" If you can't tell by now, I would highly recommend All Aboard Decks for your project. I've already got them in mind for an upcoming project on our new home!

Wade was great and easy to work with. He was willing to accommodate a couple of my requests into the build of the deck and made the whole process start to finish seamless. Eric and Tom, who did the build were very professional and did a quality work making sure every aspect of the deck was fully thought through and addressed. They got it done in 2 days as promised and we are now looking forward to using this deck going I to the spring and summer season. Definitely would hire Wade and his team with Sturdi fences again. 5 stars.

Gabriel and his crew were awesome to work with! He was prompt coming out for a quote to refinish our deck and made recommendations on the best product to use for the job. Once scheduled, he was great about communication allowing us to be prepared for their arrival/departure which is important when you have dogs. They maintained professionalism when it started raining the day they were painting and let me know right away they they would need to delay for the rain. He was very accommodating of our schedule and the many rainy days we had, remaining in constant contact about when we would be able to finish. As soon as the rain stopped and we had a day to dry out, they were back for the job completion. We are very happy with the finished product and his excellent customer service. *before and after pics attached- they were able to paint without us having to remove our plants!
