Wow. I never imagined that training our dog could be so easy. Something as simple as determining and then providing the toys that my puppy favors has made her an absolute pleasure to hang with. There's no more nipping, biting, or mouthing of my hands and feet. And with the game that Rona taught us to teach our puppy to look to us for assurance and confirmation, she's already listening better. In 24 hours, it's literally night and day between how she was before Rona came over and how she is now.

We highly recommend K-9 Kenny for dog training. We originally wanted to prepare our Pit Bull for our upcoming newborn. Specifically, we thought we needed to introduce Zeus to baby sounds and smells in order to prepare him for the huge addition. K-9 Kenny suggested we work on obedience training instead as a way to maintain control of our pup. The six sessions were money well spent! We now have a 6 week old baby, and Zeus is the most amazing dog and big brother ever. Before the training, I was unable to walk Zeus because I had no control over him. Today, I am able to walk Zeus and the newborn without any reservations or issues. Zeus is so obedient. K-9 Kenny was attentive in listening to our concerns and list of bad behaviors Zeus had, and he successfully developed a strategic plan each week to attack the issues. Kenny followed up each week with an elaborate email describing what we worked on. Not only is K-9 Kenny amazing at training, his friendliness and personality makes the training experience enjoyable. We are forever blessed to have met K-9 Kenny, and Zeus misses him already!

I have an 11 month pup that I was quite frankly having a hard time getting under control. She's my first dog out of college and I quickly realized that I was in over my head. After searching the internet, I decided to give Kevin with Aloha Canine a call. From my initial phone call to my drop off- Kevin was ready to answer any question and walk me through the game plan with my pup. He outlined a training program that was easy to follow and individually tailored to my dog's needs. She spent 3 weeks with Aloha Canine and I can honestly say she is a changed dog. She is much calmer and responds quickly to my commands. I am absolutely thrilled. I know that training a dog is a daily habit, but I am sure that with the foundation that Aloha Canine has now provided we will be A-OK! I look forward to working with my pup and mastering all of her new commands together. And I'm sure that if I have any questions in the future- Kevin will be there to help. Thank you so much Aloha Canine!!

Really liked working with them. We were super worried about how our Great Dame would react to a trainer, because he has such bad public manners and is super crazy toward people and animals, but they were willing to work with us and meet us a few times before training so our dog would feel comfortable when they did take him for two weeks. We had a great response with their training and are continuing to work with them after the two weeks.

Tiffany was wonderful with our old man (dog) Carl! He had some medical issues and needed attention throughout the day while we were at work. Tiffany went above and beyond to make sure his needs were met! Thank you Tiffany!

Brought both our 'boys' (Bouvier des Flanders - head strong!) to Canine Academy for puppy training nearly 10 years ago and have continued to use them for boarding since then. Can't say enough good things about Lisa and her crew. The boys are so well-behaved (and know some pretty great tricks) and perk up when we say "Are we going to see Lisa?" Highly Recommend for training and/or boarding!

They take a genuine interest in the health and happiness of our dogs. They truly care about them and how they interact with us in our personal situation. We have had three dogs trained by them and all three have come home as pets adaptable to nearly any type of situation. We have also been thoroughly pleased with their grooming services. Our dogs come back to us as “show” quality and we have personally witnessed the effort they take to achieve this result.

Viri did a board and train for my 5 year old dog, Nona. Up until Viri took her in, she would not listen and was just very high energy. 2 weeks after leaving Nona with Viri she was a whole new dog. She learned multiple commands and actually holds those commands until told it is ok to move around. I'm giving Viri a 5 star rating because I never thought Nona had a chance to be an obedient dog until Viri gave her a chance. You can also tell she just has a way with dogs.

Michelle was fantastic! She came to my home to work with me and my puppy, Bennet. We worked on all kinds of things from obedience to loose leash walking to greeting other people and dogs. Bennet has been making such progress, I don't know what we would do without Michelle's help!

      About

I work with the dog owner and his/her dog to learn basic commands like sit, stay, come, down, heal, off, place, etc.

      About

I have always been a lifetime lover of dogs. When I had to leave my puppy behind and move across the country to attend college, I still wanted to be able to do all the things I enjoyed doing with my own dog. Happy Hounds is a business that provides services such as dog walks, play time, checkups, or feeding when you're away. It's great for anyone who may have a busy schedule and wants to give his/her dog some extra exercise or fun time!

      About

I love dogs and taking them on fun walks so they can explore the outside. Dogs have unique personalities and are fun to get to know!

      About

Honestly, my dog walking business is just getting started! I have a bachelor's degree in English and taught high school English for 10th and 11th graders. I'm now a stay-at-home mom with three children, and I am just looking for a part-time job that I will enjoy, so that I can still pick up my kids from school, get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and make your dog happy with a walk!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
