Mike James helped us design and then he installed our new backyard. We knew we wanted and needed to redo it but weren't sure what to do. He patiently walked us through options based on likes and our budget. He then handled removal of old and install of new expertly. Mike stays on top of the project constantly. He pays great attention to details and can do just about anything that is needed -- from landscape to irrigation to fencing and much more. He is professional and outstanding with communication - he kept us informed constantly on all aspects. He and his crew were prompt, neat, quick and honest. This is our second project with Mike James and we have two more planned. I now look forward to working on projects again since finding Mike James.

If you need a fence repaired or replaced... don't go to a fence installation contractor. You will pay double the price. I contacted a number of contractors for repair of our boundary fence. Fully half didn't bother responding to my voice mail - I assume the job was too small. Of the four that actually responded, three were fence installation contractors and one was fence repair - Al. I could tell from the quote he sent me, he knew his business. There was no guessing. He quoted in linear feet and per post. When asked, he came out immediately to review the job and confirm the price and started working the next day. We were so pleased with his work quality, work ethic, and knowledge that we expanded (doubled) the work. He was able to do it all in two days. We are planning on having him come back to repair another part of the fence soon. Don't waste your time... hire Al for your fence repairs and replacements. He loves what he does, it shows, and you will not regret it.

Good quality, timely work with a very competitive price. I had a large fencing and landscaping project and they worked with me figure out what I wanted and then knocked it out quickly and efficiently. Their pricing was better than any other quotes I got and they were honest and straightforward to deal with. Will definitely be using them in the future.

Bladimir and Francis were amazing. I wanted to repaint my house exterior and I called two painting contractors who gave me bids just for the painting and not for the repairs that were necessary to prep the house for painting. I called Bladimir and Francys and the price they gave me for both the repairs and the painting was so good that I decided to contract them for both jobs. I was amazed by their work, the attention to details and their willingness to work with me. I had some doubts about how they were working on my main door and they stayed over time to make sure everything was done like I wanted. I am definitely going to call them again for all the other works around the house.

Michael Blake is very pleasant to work with. I have just short of two acres to fence in so it was a significant project. The outcome of my privacy fence was to my satisfaction and completed within the time frame Michael estimated with only one day delay due to rain. I now have a beautiful fence and can enjoy my pool in privacy. I'm very happy.

William & ATX Residential Construction has been great for our fence project. They came out and gave us an estimate ASAP organized it in a way where we could easily approach our neighbors about splitting the cost with us and was able to complete the work ASAP. I never had to wait long to hear back from him. The fence is partially complete already and looks great and they will be finishing the rest next Monday. 5 stars all around.

He tore out my fireplace and sheet rocked and textured the new wall, he replaced my small porch poles with larger ones and found and repaired a leak on my roof. I would highly recommend Vic Searcy of Searcy Construction to anyone. His bid was very reasonable. He is a crew of 1 but works like 10 men. He does beautiful work and will come back and make it right if you are not happy. I say this because after he was done and paid out we primed the new wall and the seams seemed to pop out after we primed. This was not due to him making a mistake - it really could not be seen with the texture on the wall until the wall was primed. I texted him and told him about what happened and came out the next day to look at it and he repaired it within 2 days. This contractor does not leave you even after you have paid in full - HE WILL MAKE IT RIGHT! I understand the fear you may have about hiring a contractor but with Searcy Contruction your fears are unwarranted. I would hire again. In fact I would not seek any additional bids. He is trustworthy and will do a great job for you.

Rene was awesome. Set everything up via text and e mail. He came when he said he would, provided a fair estimate and finished fixing our fence and gate in one afternoon! We have other projects that we will certainly be contacting him for in the very near future.

Hired Mario to rebuild a fence gate that fell down at my house. He checked out the fence, gave a reasonable price, and had his team come out the next day. The project went very smoothly and the gate looks great. I will definitely be hiring Mario and his team for future projects around my house and recommend his services.

Jose did a cement repair job for us and we asked him to look at our kitchen ceiling while here. He quoted a price and even though it was a harder job then any of us thought it would be he worked hard to get it fixed. It looks so much better! We would use Jose again for any of our home needs and repairs. I highly recommend Jose and his work.

Lance did a 6-foot privacy fence repair for us as well as building a small garden fence around our garden. He was very quick to respond and was able to come out for an estimate very quickly. He offered the estimate on-site and the only change in the cost was one extra 4x4 needed for the garden fence, totally reasonable. He was able to get the job done very quickly and his staff was on-time, friendly, and even very accommodating to our dogs that were in their work space from time to time. Highly recommend Lance for any project!

Ray and Ray followed directions carefully, communicated clearly, showed up on time every time, and did excellent work. They persisted thru unexpected challenges for a fair price. We've used a handful of fence contractors before. But we plan to go back to Knott's Fencing next time.

I had contact with several other fence contractors on phone before I found Ruben. I was unimpressed with the others' willingness to come out, or expectations for a travel fee just to do the estimate, or lack of response. So I was especially thankful when Ruben was quick to respond, and eager to help. He and his wife came out immediately, provided a fair estimate, and was willing to start work right away. The job was done within the week, and he was happy to accommodate special requests. He even suggested some extra decorative flourishes for the gates. The fence looks great, functions beautifully, and no doubt we will use them for additional work in future. Both he and his wife (and son, who I met one of the work days) were super nice, courteous, hard working, and professional. Highly recommend.

I am very impressed with J. Grover's craftsmanship. His attention to every detail, his extra effort to take the time of explaining to me how he planned on completing the job as well as the quality of the job he did. I have a rental property, to put it mildly the previous tenants vandalized before the vacated the property. The punched holes in the walls, broke the baseboards, busted a few door jams and somehow even tore up the privacy fence. J. Grover repaired everything. Actually, when the job was complete the property was in better shape than when I rented it out previously. My family has been blessed to find a quality contractor that we can count on. I highly recommend J. Grover contracting and property maintenance. Thank you J, I'm sure we will see you again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
