Marti is wonderful! My son was struggling with a 4000 word essay, and she helped him understand (what the school should have taught) how to do more extensive research, structure his paper and make it interesting. We have used several other tutors, and she is, by far, the best!

I was a colleague of Rick Tobin in the field of emergency preparedness. He was a proficient and succinct writer, delivered the product on time, and was highly regarded by management and co-workers. He assisted others by helping edit their plans to fit a common goal. Much of his work was technical. He prepared plans, presentations, training materials, power point presentations and delivered them in a professional manner. Rick is an accomplished author. He has an ability to write both fiction and non-fiction. He has a very creative mind, both in his writing and ideas for future projects. Rick’s creativity is a gift few people have. I can honestly say he is the most creative person I have ever met. A true artist. The Thumbtack website is not working correctly. In trying to score Rick on the qualities listed, it will only allow one of the categories to be scored. I chose Professionalism and scored him a five star. The other categories would also be five stars, but to chose another category negates the previous one.

Rachael helped me with college essays and several writing assignments throughout high school. She was constantly available when I needed her assistance and always provided me with excellent feedback. Many tutors just do the work for you or help you with minimal effort; Rachael always met me in the middle. She would provide me with ideas for new topics or help me come up with a better way to put my thoughts into words. It is always helpful to have someone who encourages you to succeed and keep going, rather than strictly tell you what is wrong and skip over the things you have done right. Due to her prior experience, Rachael is knowledgable in several areas of writing and I would recommend no one but her to assist someone in this particular area of study.

Clifton was a very efficient and professional resume writer to work with. He took my poorly written resume and completely transformed it into a straight to the point, professionally written resume that was able to land me an interview with a great company within a week. Clifton wrote my resume using the right words and emphasized my past accomplishments and past experience. He also worked very fast and had written my resume by the following day. I would definitely recommend him.

Janelle helped my complete an essay for school. It was a really tough subject and I was having difficulty even starting it. I reached out for help when I was running out of time and Janelle came through. She was able to sit with me and explain the best way to outline my thoughts so the essay would be easy to write. I got an A on my paper, some great tips on how to write essays, AND now I have someone I can call in case I'm having trouble and its crunch time! Janelle was easy to talk to, easy to meet with, and hands down the best tutor I've had!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
