Besides being punctual I was impressed with the skill and knowledge to fix a 23yr old unit that others refused to repair in order to install a new HVAC. Topping it all off Joe’s charge was reasonable. My friends and family will be getting his number for any and all future AC problems. Large or small I’m confident he can handle it.

Fred did an excellent job! He was reliable and honest about the work to replace my compressor, when another contractor from Thumbtack tried to scam me into paying 3X more because I'm a female. If you want trustworthy service call Fred!

New construction, HVAC install (spray foam home). I needed a high-quality system with a solid aesthetics in relation to box placement. My house also requires a contractor familiar with spray foam homes and Dayton was able to deliver. They were fast and thorough with rough-in. Looking forward to firing everything up when the other subs finish up.

Alfredo was quite knowledgeable and did a thorough test and clean of my old HVAC system. Other companies have only sprayed up under the vents and said they cleaned the coils but Alfredo removed them for a thorough cleaning. His testers showed that a capacitor on my outside unit and one on inside unit needed replacement so replaced those. I’m pleased and will recommend to new owner that she continue with him for routine maintenance.

I live in Houston and have a rental home in San Antonio so working with someone over the phone can be a challenge. I spoke with David who was very responsive to my needs. They responded immediately and they were out at the job looking at the projects that same day. I had two projects, a very large tree that had fallen, and roof shingles that had to be repaired because the tree damaged the roof. I was immediately called and given a quote. I gave TX Modern Contracting the job because I trusted what they said they would do and boy did they deliver. My tenant left for work and the tree and roof was repaired before they returned. They sent me pictures of the before and after job. The roof was repaired and it looked like I never even had a tree. Thanks David for a JOB WELL DONE!

Hamilton is what all contractors should be. He showed up on time, quoted all work before beginning, did exactly what he said and more, and left everything better than he found it. We will definitely use and recommend Sykes Electrical Service again!

I've gone through 5 other HVAC companies since buying my home 9 years ago and Andre was hands down the best tech I've hired. He fixed numerous design issues left by other companies and really did his homework getting me a much better condensate pump for a better price than the one replaced.

Chris did a great job removing the popcorn in on of our bedrooms. We didn't want to pay what the larger painting contractors wanted to charge and we didn't want to do it ourself so Chris was the perfect choice. He showed up when planned and finished in the expected time. Finished product looks great.

Jason responded quickly, was very professional (as all most all veterans are), found a problem in the HVAC wiring that an electrician could not find last week, fixed the problem, made sure everything was running an installed properly, provided a detailed invoice, accepted payment and left. I am going to use him from now on!

Spartan was very quick to respond to my request and even came out on a Sunday to do a hydrostatic test required by my insurance company. In all he installed 2 sinks, 2 faucets, a dishwasher, disposal, replaced shut off valves and supply lines. Replaced a gas valve to turn on/off my gas stove/oven, cleaned and replaced a toilet tank and put in all new inerds. Charged me what I thought was a very reasonable price, especially for coming out on such short notice and on a weekend. Evaluated and gave me several options to replace a tub that is leaking. We will most definitely be hiring him to do the tub replacement as soon as my husband and I determine which route we want to take on that job. He and his apprentice, son, were very easy and nice to work with and communicate with. They did a beautiful and professional job and cleaned up the job site very nicely before leaving. Best plumbing experience!

Kelley was very helpful with providing information and setting up an appointment. Mike and Jennifer are very knowledgeable and explained in detail everything we needed to know to make the best decision to fix our HVAC system. Luis and David did a great job with the installation of our new HVAC system. They went above and beyond to make sure we did not go more than one day without A/C. They explained everything to us and they cleaned up after themselves. Overall the customer service and product provided was excellent.

My neighbor had the same service done and paid alot more for the same size house. Wish I could have recommended them for her before she had her service done....very glad to recommend them to others!

Being in the commercial construction the bar is pretty hire when hiring contractors. Marcus was responsive, punctual, and stuck with the project until it was complete. He quickly diagnosed the issue with my 19 year old system and found a supply house open across town with the part in stock (on a Saturday). He ran, picked it up and repairs the system quickly. He didn't try to over bill me. Very professional. I would definitely hire him again without hesitation

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
