Every time I move I have always vowed to get movers, but at the last minute I usually decide to "save money" and do it myself. I usually end up regretting the stupid decision midway, but pushing through because the job must be completed. I later find myself completely bruised & banged up, exhausted, and dirty by the end of the day... because it always takes ALL DAY!! All because I wanted to save a few dollars. Well FINALLY... I did the smart thing and researched movers. I was delighted when I came across Thumbtack who provided me with several movers quotes for me to choose from. Making my task to "research" very easy. I checked out the ratings and customer reviews and the best of the best were Texan Movers. I remembered having seen their trucks on the road and decided to give them a call. This was on a Sunday, and they were closed. Despite being closed I still received a call back minutes later, because someone happened to swing the the office that day and saw my missed call. I immediately made my move appointment. I found that the pricing was affordable and competitive. The day of the move they arrived right on time. Three men and a 32-ft trailer. They immediately got to work. They were professional, polite, and thorough. I was pleasantly surprised. If I had something to move that was "risky" they let me know they weren't comfortable with moving it. Which I appreciated over my things being damaged. Anyway... this is getting too long. They moved everything. Furniture, TV's, servers, glass tables. Nothing was damaged. I have never moved without breaking something. They started at 8am and finished at 1pm. From a 2200 square foot townhome with stairs moved across town to a 2300 square foot house also with stairs. That was the best money I spent and would do it again. I am literally waking up from a nap on move day and now I can start to unpack as I get up feeling refreshed. I think the next move I'll take it a step further and hire packers too. I hope to be able to do business with Texan Movers again. Thanks so much!!

We were coming in from out of state with the U-Haul and a commitment from other movers who pulled out at the last minute. Wilson was wonderful to take us on out of the blue at the end of what was a very long day for him. He was completely positive and professional the whole time as were his helpers! We would recommend him without hesitation and appreciate the great job he did for us!

I have moved around a lot as a military kid and even when I was a young professional. My experience with 1st Choice Moving & Storage was 100% positive. We we sold our house and decided last minute to utilize professional movers. Last minute as in we called Bruce the day before we needed movers. Bruce was great and accommodating on a Sunday and made sure we were scheduled for the next day. The moving team came within the window Bruce provided us. The lead was Alex McKinnon and I couldn't possibly come up with enough compliments for his work ethic. It was obvious that he has a depth of knowledge in regards to moving items and setting up efficient moving chain. He lead the team very well and did not try to eat time like some movers do. He kept me informed at all times and had answers for all of my questions. I would definitely recommend his expertise on any moving team and we plan to move in a few months and would not use 1st Choice Moving & Storage without him. Alex's associate Ronnie Rush was utilized heavily in the big furniture moves in regards to wrapping furniture and transporting items to the truck. Ronnie was extremely efficient and I definitely saw the value he brought to the moving team. He appeared to have the same knowledge as Alex in regards to moving, which brought immediately value to the team. The third associate was Miguel Prada. Miguel was vital in the fact that all moves are about volumn. While Alex and Ronnie worried about the bigger items, Miguel moved all of the items very quickly, which made me feel like there was no downtime in the moving process. Overall, the team was extremely efficient compared to teams I've utilized before and I have moved probably 18 times in my entire life. I really appreciated that the entire team was respectful and friend to my wife and I. They made what was a very daunting task enjoyable. I would want the SAME exact team for our next move. I feel bad that we didn't provide pizza/sandwiches but next time there will DEFINITELY be a few pizzas at the end of our next move. Great guys and great company!!!

I hired two movers with Graceful Movers and was impressed with their communication and professionalism. Everything was moved with care and wrapped accordingly. I would absolutely recommend them, and if I hire movers again I wouldn't hesitate to use Graceful Movers a second time.

I loved these guys! So professional! On time! Extremely patient when they had to deal with the silly rules of my building. Fast, efficient, nothing was broken. A pleasure to speak with. I kept telling them how amazing they were which was probably annoying. I had a work emergency that required me to go in at the last minute and the movers allowed me to reschedule without any drama. I can’t recommend them enough!

I was very pleased with most of the work from the movers. My only disappointment was when I looked at my bill. They had quoted me one rate, then billed me for a different rate for the first two hours. The movers worked very hard! They had to move the contents of a 2 BR apt from a 3rd floor apt to another 3rd floor apt. They would even offer to take the belongings into a specific room of the apt at the new location (even after I told them that wasn't necessary -- that we could get everything into the right rooms if they just stacked all the boxes in the LR / DR. I would definitely use this company again.... (I would just make sure what the specifics of the quote were in advance).

With all of the news stories about movers ripping people off, I was concerned about finding a moving company to move a 1 bedroom apartment from Houston to Memohis. A-Star movers came on time, they were clean and courteous and everything was moved. Their bid was the cheapest and without surprises. What was most amazing was they picked up the furniture and delivered it the next day! I'm very pleased and would highly recommend them for a local or out of state move.

I was very pleasantly surprised with Uriel Movers. I was a little nervous at first booking a company with no reviews, no website, etc, but it turned out really great. They were very punctual, responsive to a few time changes I requested, and very nice guys that helped me. I would highly recommend.

I was in a situation that I could not schedule movers until the day before I needed to move. Not ideal, but this was also mid-month and mid-week so it wasn't impossible. The first company I hired mentioned that while it was the day before the scheduled move it shouldn't be a problem as there were no other moves on the calendar for the next day aside from mine. One hour before the movers were scheduled to arrive I received a phone call stating they could only provide 1 person vs 2. They asked if I still wanted them to send the 1 mover. Having heavy furniture required at least 2 movers so I had to cancel and then scramble to find other arrangements. I called Michael and he was not only able to make arrangements to be there, but he did so enthusiastically. He and his team did an excellent job not only protecting my belongings but taking care to make sure everything was arranged on the truck in a manner that made the move on both ends efficient. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to others! Thank you, Michael!

I'm so glad that I chose Bellhops for my move. I used the labor option w/o moving truck because I was moving less than 50 ft. from my old apartment to an adjacent unit. The two movers arrived as scheduled and went above & beyond their work duty! One mover helped repair a broken bookshelf that I had planned on throwing away. Alongside the amazing repair, the movers both worked very quickly and efficiently. I cannot praise them enough! Thank you Myles and Eric for making my move so easy!

William Betton and the two Movers, Cesar and Thomas, did a great job in moving us from an apt to house last weekend. They dis-assembled and assembled our furniture with great care. They also wrapped all the important big items nicely in a plastic wrap. I would recommend them to anyone in future.

These guys are absolute machines. They moved me from a second story unit to a third story in 90 degree weather in about 4 hours, transit time included. I got them lunch on the way and they barely stopped working to eat. Not a single scratch or dent on any of the furniture, they took a lot of care wrapping everything well. Did not find any other movers that even came close on the price. Definitely will keep Victor's number for any future moves and would recommend Precise Moving to anyone looking to move.

Timely, Organized, and careful are the words I use to describe this company and the people they employ, which are not typically words I have used to describe moving companies in the past. I called Sugar Land Moving to move our office from Main St in Houston to McGowen St the the day before in a pinch and the movers showed up that following morning early and ready to work! Not a single item was damaged and everything was moved within the same day! I will absolutely be using them for all future moves to come!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
