It has been a great experience having Janet as a tutor. She has worked with my daughter to strengthen material learned in the past so it will help her with the new material she receives. Janet has been able to catch her up with difficult Geometry lessons and get her ready in advance of the material she is going to learn. My daughter's grade went from nearly failing to all A's in B's in K Level Geometry. I can definitely reccomend Janet as a tutor.

We loved Alfonso! He was flexible in scheduling and very sweet. My daughter liked working with him. He made went the extra mile to make sure she was comfortable with the lessons. He even made her laugh a few times which is a rarity when she does math!

Working with Oludare was a great experience. He really took the time with me when working on problems and made sure I knew the material forward and back. I haven't come across a tutor that was willing to adjust their office hours to accommodate the students school schedule. He was a great mentor and friend.

My son had several lessons with Ozer. Ozer's knowledge of three subjects(physics, mathematics, chemistry) helped him a lot. He spotted my son's problems quickly and helped him to fix them. His academic background is also fascinating.

I have been unsure about a personal tutor, and Mike and his team made it so easy that I wish I would have hired one sooner!! He has worked with the unexpected changes from dates/times to changes in the subject matter of each session. Cody (our tutor) is always on time and prepared. Even after a month, we saw a noticeable improvement with his school work.

During the school year I needed a tutor specialized in enhancing the reading comprehension and writing competencies for my daughter who is high school junior. After a consultation, my daughter had multiple sessions with an experienced tutor who helped her develop overall study habits. Her reading comprehension and desire to write increased after the sessions. I would highly recommend their services.

My 5th grade son, Jonathan was struggling terribly with reading and writing skills, which included fluency, comprehension, spelling, sentence structure and writing paragraphs/essays. He was very frustrated and unmotivated about going to school and doing any kind of academic work, just at the point where he didn't even want to try (at school or at home). It was a constant struggle and battle at home after school during homework/study. Not only was my son frustrated, I was too, day after day, week after week. After contacting Club Z and meeting with the area director in my home, I still was not sure what to expect. During the first tutoring session, Jonathan immediately clicked with his tutor. I couldn't believe it! His tutor was very patient and understanding and was also like a mentor/role model for him; he was able to get Jonathan to work. The tutor combined Jonathan's school curriculum and his own lessons based on Jonathan's learning needs and was successful in helping my son retrieve the reading and writing skills that had been lost along the way. Jonathan's teacher has noticed such a positive difference since we implemented after school and Saturday tutoring and called to tell me how impressed she was. Our friends and family also noticed the difference in Jonathan's overall attitude! Not only does Jonathan look forward to going to class, he is even excited about going middle school next school year. We will definitely acquire the services of our Club Z tutor, if/when any future academic needs arise. I truly mean it when I say Jonathan's tutor was a god-send and my family appreciates him more than words can ever describe! The addition of a tutor made our lives so much better! Thank you so much Club Z!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
