My next door neighbor suggested that Lynn would be an excellent choice for a few jobs that I needed help with around my house. He was absolutely correct. I had wanted a pocket door for years to cut down on "door traffic" into my kitchen. Lynn installed it, then hung two more heavy duty doors from my house and through my garage. Later, Lynn painted my entire kitchen, den, and laundry room. He did such an excellent job of patching holes, picture nails, dents, marks, and an assorted collection of day to day scarring on the walls. He painted all the walls and all the ceilings, a tedious job at best. He is neat and organized and conscientious and timely! Lynn spent an adequate amount of time on each project. I would totally recommend him for any type of household repair or improvement. Woodworking is his specialty, but he accomplished my goals in my house very thoughtfully as though he were working on his own property.

James was fantastic! He quoted me a very fair price, communicated well before the project, showed up on time, did the job in a timely manner, was respectful & clean, and did a high quality job. I would hire him again for any carpentry/woodworking job.

Tom did an amazing job on our kitchen, utility and master bath cabinetry. He came out to the house, took measurements and created drawings for us to see layouts. He was very easy to work with and quality and value was great! Couldn't be happier with the way our remodel turned out and Tom was a big part of that. He even had some great ideas on materials for our floating shelves and vent hood! I would highly recommend him for your next project and we will be using him on future projects as well!

Beyond that, he is an impressive problem solver who is always able to address complex issues with strategy and confidence. Hai has always been an absolute joy to work with. My first home project turned out beautifully and I love it so much! Without a doubt, I confidently recommend Hai if you need a home project. Thank you for your beautiful works Hai. We were looking for a shadow box to be made for a birth present to give to our son who is very interested in all things horror film. My neighbor gave me a business card for B&W woodwork and said they build things custom designed. I figured why not atleast give them a call. The person who answered the phone was Thomas. I explained what I was looking for and we exchanged a few ideas back and forth through email. Once I decided on a final design, he went straight to work. 24hrs later I had a very awesome present for our sons dorm room. I couldn't ask for more. He was fast and gave a very honest price. The final product is beyond my expectations.

1. Service - Joe is a great guy, pretty friendly, and easy to work with. He listens to what you want, and he gave us a really good experience. We've hired him to build floor-to-ceiling bookshelves for our home office. 2. Price - my wife and I were on a budget. We've told him what we've wanted to pay and Joe was willing to work with our price. In fact, he was the cheapest of the other 5 offers that we've received. He allowed for us to pay in installments and that helped us out a lot. 3. Craftsmanship - Joe is my one and only craftsman I have ever worked with, but I can tell that he is really good at what he does. His work is amazing, and I'm really glad we've decided to use him. 4. Timeliness - very quick and ready to work. Joe gave us an estimated time frame and he even beat his own deadline. 5. Process - I've found him in the Thumbtack app. I didn't think too much of it, and decided to try the app and get offers from people for the upcoming day or two. Unexpectedly, he replied back within 5 minutes of my post. He even came out to the house on that same day to take a look at the space and gave us a free estimate. Through the course of the time, he kept us updated on his efforts through email. Most of our communication were documented by email. He built the shelves at his shop, and when he was finally ready, it only took him a day to build the shelves in our house. I've had a wonderful experience with Joe and I can't praise him enough. If I ever need anymore woodwork in the future, I would definitely go back to him. I highly recommend Culpepper Custom Woodworks!

I requested cabinets for my laundry room. From the start Mr. Thornton was very professional. He took the time to understand the design I wanted. He came by to measure and was very accommodating to the dimensions and design I requested. In the end, the final product came out how I envisioned. He and his nephew did a fantastic job installing the cabinets. Excellent work and support throughout the process. I would definitely recommend him. Job well done. Good quality and beautifully made.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
