After the first session, there was a huge improvement in my dogs behavior, and the instructions were easy to follow and continue after the instructor left the house.

Debi is by far the most trustworthyhy care giver I know. I've had the honor of knowing Debi for years and I can't say enough amazing things about her. You don't come across people like this very often, so when I say it's an honor, I truly mean that will all of my heart. I've known Debi as an animal control officer as well, and I'll just say you don't come across ACO's like her at all!!!! I worked in the veterinary field for 8 years, so trust me when I say that. She will treat your pet as if they were her own and nothing less! I love Debi and respect her to the fullest!

Stephanie is a wonderful dog trainer! She helps me train my 4 month old puppy. She is very knowledgeable of dog behavior in general, and breed specific behavior, too. She teaches only positive reinforcement training techniques and is very sweet with my pup. Lola loves her, too!

I can not say enough about the great service I received from Michele. She pet sat my babies (2 dogs) over the 2014 Christmas holiday Dec 22-Dec 26. 1. Communication was excellent. I received a quick response from her on the first day I posted my ad. She was prompt in her replies. 2. We agreed to meet on Monday 12/15 for a meet and greet, but I had to change the appt day due to my work schedule. Michele was very accommodating. We met on 12/17. She was prompt, came with a notebook and asked questions. My dogs took very well to her. You can tell she is an animal lover. 3. My cocker spaniel is very shy and does not eat well when we are away. Michele took great care of him and made sure that he ate his meals and even made boiled chicken and hand fed him to entice his appetite. She brought her girls with her and they helped and played with the dogs. 4. My second dog is an elderly dog (15 years old) who became very ill the day I was leaving. He had been having kidney & back problems leading to this trip and I was so worried to leave him boarded with his condition. Michele assured me that she would take excellent care of him while I was gone. My dog became bed ridden by mid week and Michele kept him comfortable until I was able to come home and make a decision about his health. Michele did everything in her power to ensure he ate, took his medication and cleaned any messes left behind. She was truly an angel. She did this several times a day all thru Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Unfortunately my dog has since then crossed the Rainbow Bridge, I find comfort in knowing that Michele was there with him. She is a trained vet tech and was knowledgable in caring for animals when an emergency situation arrises. She stayed calm and provided me with updates on his condition several times a day. 5. When i arrived home my kitchen was tidy and detailed notes were left on each day including, heart rate, behavior, eating and potty breaks. 6. There was also 2 cats and 2 turtles in the house. Michele filled the cat bowl and scooped out my litter box daily (this was an added bonus). She fed my turtles and even separated them if they got aggressive with each other. 7. Michele brought in my mail and packages (another added bonus). My doors were locked and secure. All in all Michele is excellent at what she does. You can trust your pets and your home to her. I would use her again in a heartbeat the next time I have to go out of town. Melinda S.

Nicole is an outstanding dog trainer! When we adopted two shelter dogs of different ages two months ago, we didn't realize what we were getting ourselves into! We decided to bring Nicole in to help refine our dog's behaviors and help them settle into their new home quickly. Nicole's approach is both gentle and consistent. She also provided great tips along the way for things we can do going forward as our dogs' training becomes more advanced. Communication was always clear and everything went smoothly from beginning to end. All of us, dogs included, miss seeing her every weekend. She was truly a joy to work with! We highly recommend Nicole to all of our family and friends, and the minute we decide our dogs are ready for more advanced training, Nicole is who we will call! Thank You NICOLE!!! :-)

Tena is amazing! I had two badly behaved dogs that needed training. Tena helped me set up a list of behavioral goals for my dogs. She then provided a detailed training schedule to help accomplish those goals. After just a few weeks of weekly training sessions, my dogs can now sit, lie down, stay, and “leave it” on command. They now walk on a leash without pulling – something I was unable to accomplish on my own. Tena is affordable, knowledgeable, patient, and dependable. She teaches you how to train your dog so that you can practice commands on your own. I highly recommend Tena for any dog training needs. Cyndi L.

Michelle did an excellent job with all of our animals. This was the first time we have left them and come back and they are not traumatized, house destroyed or having to take a trip to the vet. She seemed to really care for the animals and that showed. Michelle was respectful of our home and we really appreciated that also!! We will defiantly use her service again and I know the animals will love that!! Thank you Michelle!!

During the meet and greet one of our shy cats even came out to meet Dayna. My husband and I were both shocked! Animals must know she loves them! We have started calling her our cat whisperer. She did an amazing job of watching them and we will definitely hire her again!

Peggy is a phenomenal trainer! She has helped me be more confident in my training. Her methods always work even with some of my misbehaved furbabies! We started with basic training for two puppies and moved the whole way through graduation of advanced training. We are now working with my adult rescue dog that can be a bit of a bully. I can now control the situation and have learned what to watch for in advance to stop the bad behavior before it starts. I cannot thank her enough for for all our success!

Amber is very personable and seems to love animals. Her dog was really trained well and got along with ours right away. I will know more once we get our BG back when she is done. I was very impressed with her place. There weren't a bunch of kennels all over and it was spotlessly clean. I think we made the right choice...

We haven't even had the first session yet, but we have had the free consultation. It lasted about an hour and Tim did great with my dog. She showed us a few things while here and even just that little bit has made a world of difference in the behavior of my dog. Looking forward to a well behaved dog very soon.

Sarah did an amazing job teaching my whole family how to train our new puppy!  Even my 8 year old daughter works with our dog to reinforce what we learned in Puppy Kindergarten and Manners. We continue to use the positive training technique she taught us. Situations have come up we needed to address and by using treats (our dog is very food motivated) we have curbed the unwanted behavior. So many people tell us what a good dog we have and that he is so well behaved. We have come a long way in less than a year. We highly recommend Sarah!

She is very dependable and great with animals. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

Cathy and Jacob both took care of my cat while I was out of town. They were both very sweet to my baby and updated me every day with pictures and written texts. My cat has to take medication for renal failure so he requires more attention than an average cat and has to be fed twice a day. They asked what time I normally fed him so that way they would not throw him off his feeding schedule. My little man was very happy to have all the attention and I am thankful they took such good care of him ?. I Definitely recommend their services if you are in need of an animal sitter!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
