Great company to work with. Our home me is over 100 years old located in Sugarhouse. They did a fantastic job helping us understand what issues we were having and how to economically deal with them. They installed a reverse osmosis machine, a dishwasher hooked up a gas stove, put an expansion tank on the hot water heater and installed a pressure valve. All very a very reasonable price. They were very professional, cleaned up after their work and were nice to speak with while they worked. Will definitely hire again.

Such a great experience, where do I start? Our water heater broke. I submitted a request Monday evening for a pro to take a look, and they reached out that same night. I called Tuesday morning to set up a time for them to come check out our water heater. They came that Tuesday afternoon for a consultation. They told us we'd have to replace our water heater, which is what we were expecting. They came prepared with a replacement, so they were able to install the new tank and take our broken one right there during the consultation. All in one day. I had a hot shower this morning and I just couldn't believe how quickly and efficiently they took care of us, communicating each step with us along the way.

He asked to come over the day before he was scheduled in order to do some measurements for the water heater installation, but ended up staying and getting the job done then and there. He was thorough, meticulous and even has a fun sense of humor. Highly recommended!

I hired Henrie Plumbing (Keith) to remove my old defective hot water heater and install a new one. He purchased the new one and installed it a very timely manner and at a very reasonable price. He also removed my broken garbage disposal. Replaced it with a new on at the best price I could find. He is very efficient, does very good work, very knowledgeable about plumbing. I highly recommend him for any plumbing needs.

My regular plumber told me my water heater would need to be replaced soon and he quoted me $1,500. I put off replacing it because I thought I had some time. However, late Saturday night my water heater started leaking. I was going out of town Monday morning and had arranged for someone to stay at my house to take care of my dog. I needed to get this fixed quickly. I called my regular plumber and was told that I would be charged extra for a weekend call plus they wouldn't be able to replace it anyway because the shop was closed. Not very helpful. On Sunday morning I was frantically searching for a plumber and found Thumbtack. I explained my issue and said I needed the water heater replaced that morning. Aaron responded within 15 minutes. We had a conversation and he was at my house in an hour. Aaron went above and beyond. The way the furnace was installed made removing the old water heater difficult and he had to cut out some framing in the wall. Despite all of difficulty and a Sunday morning call, his price for the water heater replacement was well below what my original plumber had quoted me. I think I have a new plumber now. I would highly recommend Aaron. He was prompt, courteous, cleaned up, did a great job, and was very reasonably priced. I would not hesitate to recommend him.

I have worked with Kore Investments on several home improvement projects. In this case they replaced 2 old doors with new ones. We live in an older home without standard door sizes. They did a professional job in manually cutting and fitting the doors. They look like they were custom made for our 1941 home. They were quick and efficient from quote to invoice. I would highly recommend Kore Investments to anyone looking to do a home improvement or maintenance project. They've done everything from updating electrical, replacing windows with doors, installing a water heater, and now replacing 2 exterior doors. The knowledge and expertise of Matt LeMelle and his team is extensive. There is no home project I wouldn't consult and hire them for.

Tim with Water Heater Specialists was an easy choice when I posted a job for a water heater replacement. He replied very quickly with a quote and a water heater option. A few more messages back and forth through the app and I had an appointment setup without ever talking on the phone. Other responders wanted me to call them even though I had provided pictures and ample information detailing what I needed. Tim arrived on time and communicated both through the app and text message (I didn’t pick up when he called, oops) when he was on his way. He worked quickly and finished in just over an hour. He left behind a nice clean installation as well as laminated tags indicating what lines to turn off in the event of an emergency (my wife was excited about this). Tim was very personable, friendly, and easy to work with. If I ever have the need, I look forward to working with him again and highly recommend him.

I hired Steve to install a kitchen faucet and garbage disposal. Not only was he prompt in his initial response/quote, but he showed up on time, completed the work quickly, and was far less than his competition. After finishing his work, he waited an extra 30 minutes at no charge while an installer from RC Willey finished our dishwasher ( the water was turned off and Steve wanted to ensure his work was done properly). It won't take long for Pollard Plumbing to build their business as they're honest, prompt, and and perform quality work. I'll have Steve back out in the next six months to replace our water heater. Hire Pollard Plumbing and you'll have a plumber for life!

I was looking for someone with a lot of experience as water was getting into my basement and I didn't know how. I have had other plumbers come out and be unsuccessful in finding the problem, but they still charge for the visit. But Gilbert came out and quickly figured out the problem and then fixed it - for even less than his original bid. My wife said he was very punctual, very friendly, and very honest. I will be calling Gilbert for my plumbing needs from now on.

Jason has done a lot of plumbing for us. He helped us do a huge remodel putting in sinks, toilets, faucets, shower heads. He's replaced our water heater on a Saturday. He's fixed a stubborn basement floor drain. With each job, he's been honest, efficient, knowledge, friendly, and always cleans up after he's finished. His prices are fair and we always call him for all our needs. We always recommend him because he really is THE BEST PLUMBER!

I called Shaun on a Friday around 4:30pm. My water heater was done! He was quite a ways away. I had hot water running by 8pm that night. Price was fair! I totally trust Shaun to work in my home, even when I’m not there.

Had a water heater replacement done by Budget Plumbing. Appreciated their friendliness and quality of service. Could work on timing, other than that, I would recommend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
