The packers and movers did a great job for me. They have a fantastic work ethic and took amazing care in handling my property. I thought carefully about what really stood out about my experience as I don't leave reviews often. Every aspect of the move was excellent from the office call to the estimate to our movers professionalism, timeliness, friendly & honest nature to them making the move fun. It speaks volumes when you see employees are happy, pleasant and work well with one another. When I read reviews I find it helpful when the reviewer gives complete information on the experience and why they selected to hire or utilize services. I received 4 estimates from moving companies via Thumbtack and felt somewhat discouraged in the beginning after learning 2 of the companies I received a quote from were not professional movers nor were they insured. Naturally I was reluctant to book any company from Thumbtack after realizing the range of standards between the companies. After carefully researching the Movers and the other company, I hired the movers not only due to their reviews here but from the many other great reviews I found online. Kingsley was also very nice about answering all of my questions and my many calls. Bottom line I am thrilled I used them and have nothing but great things to say about the services I received. I hope my review is helpful to others looking to hire a moving company.

The Other Side Movers did a great job for us, short notice, at an awesome rate. They showed up on time (even a few minutes early?) and worked hard the whole time. Our last few moves have been company-sponsored relocations with full-service professional movers/packers. I didn't want to return to self-packing, but didn't know if I could/should afford to hire out the packing. The Other Side came through with an awesome rate and got the job done quickly with a courteous crew who worked hard as a team to get my house packed. It is a training program, and as such the crew doesn't have as much experience as some crews, but I was very happy with their work. They didn't think they had room in their schedule to do the actual move, but a day after packing they called back to say they had some scheduling changes and would be able to move us. They made quick work of transferring our possessions from our home to two drop-off locations. I would use them again and recommend them. It feels good to help out with the program, and it is a very affordable way to hire out the tough work of moving/packing.

I was very pleased with the work provided by Right Track Movers. Two men came. They were careful moving the items I had and listened to my request to place items by when I thought they would be removed from the storage unit. They organized the items well in the storage unit. Both men worked quickly and efficiently even when talking to me. They assisted in wrapping some of the items that I had not wrapped well or that came loose and made certain everything was placed well and safely. My husband was surprised at how well the storage unit was packed and surprised at how much space we had left to use. The men completed the job within the 3 hour minimum window. I was pleasantly surprised by how little the move cost. I would recommend them to anyone who is about to move. These guys do an excellent job and are very careful with your belongings and furniture. I give them 5 stars!!

I hired them because I thought they were professional piano movers. I have had another company move me 3 times in the past 5 years (divorce). The were all professional looking, matching T-shirts from the company, clean, respectable looking. Erik's guys were nice enough, reeked of cigarettes, not very clean, in my opinion not a good representation for the company. But got the piano here on time safe & sound.

Best movers I've ever use. I will use them again and would recommend them to anyone. Austin was responsive and a real pro. They came with tools and equipment and the move was done with relative ease. I wish I had found them earlier!

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

We hired upside movers to move and put together all of our office furniture for our new office location. They completely exceeded our expectation and put in well over the amount of time and work expected to complete the job. Their attitudes, friendliness, and time-management was absolutely wonderful, and our over-all experience was great. I would highly recommend them! Thanks Upside!

Connor helped us to unload the moving boxes and furniture of a one-bedroom apartment. He carried and put our stuff carefully and finished the job in around 3.5 hours. We think that he was doing a good job and the charge is relatively low compared to other movers.

These guys were great! My sister and I had to bring the u-haul ourselves. We were a little nervous about everything. These guys went above and beyond! They asked where we wanted everything placed. They were very careful, yet quick. They even helped us assemble bed frames and a mirror that we had no idea how to do. They packed our empty boxes back to the u-haul as we moved along in the process. Hire Mastermind Movers! You can't go wrong. Friendly. Professional. Great service.

I had them unload my moving PODs. They were polite through the entire ordeal and knew how to take care of my expensive stuff. Thank you Smart Move and thank you Thumbtack.com! Samwell

Red Barn movers arrived on time. After instructions, they quickly went to work to remove all furniture from the top floor of my home in preparation for new paint and carpet. Very courteous and very careful in moving furniture to make sure there was no damage to the walls or the furniture itself. Highly recommended. Great experience.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
