Ted did a fantastic job installing a new furnace and central air. The price was very reasonable and Ted didn't try and "upsell" us on things we didn't need. After having several HVAC contractors come in and try and sell us a system we didn't need, it was refreshing to have Ted's no nonsense approach. We will be calling him again for future projects.

There is nothing worse than coming home from vacation to find your AC is broken. I called 5 HVAC contractors to come out, and the soonest they could come out was 5 days later. I found Monarch Heating and Cooling on thumbtack and had my problem solved in less than 24 hours. We're happy and back to being cool.

Cody Replaced a furnace and added AC Central Air to our 100 year old home in the middle of summer. It was not an easy job and he remained positive and upbeat throughout. He showed up when he said he would, and cleaned up after himself. He honored his quote and delivered service above and beyond expectations. I highly recommend him. I work with a lot of contractors in my day job and he is at the top of my list.

Boyd arrived when he stated he would be here. He quoted the amount of time it would take to do the installation of a new furnace and finished early. He cleaned up the area well. He has also contacted me to make sure everything is working well. He quoted the price up front and it was very affordable. I would highly recommend this company for any HVAC work.

We just purchased a home where they had moved the washer and dryer into the kitchen, but the plumbing wasn't working there, and we wanted the washer and dryer back in the laundry room in the basement. The job ended up being more complicated then originally expected, but they stuck with their original quote, and I was very happy with the work done and the price paid.

Can't say enough good things about this company. It’s great to work with people that truly know their business. There are many HVAC companies that can lean a lot from Desert Star heating and air on how to treat their customer. Thanks again for the great service. It was a pleasure working with you!

Wayne and his crew were fantastic! He got me in really quick. He beat the competitors prices. His tech guy was very nice and helpful. He gave me a bid and stuck to it. Didn't try to sale me on anything else. He even left me with some extra filters for my furnace. They did a good job of protecting my floors and cleaning up after themselves. I would absolutely recommend them and use them again. It was a great experience! Especially after the other companies I have tried to work with that were awful.

We live in Twin Falls, ID (200 miles away from the Contractors office). We bought a new (built in 1999) home in September 2017. It was a VA purchase and should have been inspected better but when we were putting up the Christmas Lights in December we noticed that there was dry rot on the eaves of the home. The original shingles had not been overlapped on the eaves so water damage was discovered. I contacted several roofing contractors and SEARS was the Contractor we picked. Their professionalism and attention to detail was tops. Their response time was very short and I have never seen a better roof than we have now. I will use their Contractors in the future.

Thank you Andrew for your competence, honesty, and fairness.

Brock did an excellent job adding some vents to by basement. He was very professional and thoroughly explained what he was going to do before starting. He got the job done quickly and showed up when he said he would. He was much cheaper than other quotes that I have gotten. I would highly recommend him over any of the big HVAC companies.

I was a little skeptical with the pricing at first. It seemed almost too good to be true. Chris came in 2k less in some cases 4k. Fact of the matter is Hvac companies are making a killing. I found the parts online for 3k and these other companies wanted to charge me 6-9k for parts and labor. So we are talking about a ton of profit for a day's worth of work. I took a chance on Chris knowing it could be too good to be true. Well it was the best deal I've ever taken. Chris and his team came out and within 6 hours they installed a new furnace, AC unit, and lines. They were all very professional and always answered any questions or concerns I had. It's nice knowing that o have a got to Hvac guy now that charges a very very very fair price.I love my new setup!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
