My wife and I struggled with this review. First, let me start by saying that Clay is a very friendly person that has the best of intentions. I really think the difficulties we had with him were partly due to the sheer size of our project.
Pros: He was very reasonable in his estimate. Not so far below everyone else that it was suspect, but he was very competitive. He communicated well throughout the the bid and selection process and offered some very good advice on what product and color to use.
We hired him to paint the interior of our house and it was a very big job. He had to cover 4 different colors on tall walls and architectural walls. He definitely got everything covered and the house looks better than it did before. He painted our baseboards without us asking him and he went above and beyond to match the color of our ceiling.
After the first few days of him painting, we offered him more work finishing an area of basement that we started and lacked the skills to complete. He taped, mudded and painted this area and did a very good job. I left him a mess and he did a very good job completing it.
Cons: He did not ever arrive on time. We allowed him to tell us when he could be here and he was 2-3 hours late most every day for the first week. I talked to him about it, but it only got a little better. We changed our schedules and our son stayed home from his personal time to be here and let Clay in, but it didn't matter. Clay even joked later after setting a time to come and said "but, we both know I'll be late."
Once he neared the completion of the project, I think he lost focus. We have spent the 2 days after he left cleaning up caulk and touching up paint all over the house. We had paint in the carpet and on furniture too.
I believe that he wanted to do right by us, but the project was too big. It took him A LOT longer than he planned.
Recommendation: I would hire him again for a small job, if there was no time constraint.
