Rob was so personable and good about getting the job done. No up selling or push to do more. Will have him do more for us he was honest, on time, kind, reasonably priced. It's hard when you get older not to have people take advantage of you.

Wow! I was about to delete this app because lately I've had bad experiences from contractors on Thumbtack. Darrell turned that around; what a great, honest, hard working guy. I would definitely recommend to everyone. He is very knowledgeable and is quick to find solutions. He quickly found the problem and solution to my low water pressure in my sprinkler system. Great guy! Thank you, Darrell!

I enjoyed working with Mindy and Brittany. They did a full house deep clean for us. They worked hard and did a thorough job on what they did, especially on my bathroom and kitchen tile. She even bought light bulbs and stove plates and replaced them for me. Mindy was fun to talk to and gave me some good home decor advice as I organized and decluttered alongside her. She underestimated the time it would take to do the job, so she came back the next day for an additional 4 hours to scrub the grout in our tile so we could seal it. She still didn't finish everything, but she gave us some cleaning supplies and kept the price she originally quoted. I chose Mindy because she gave the most competitive bid and because she included scrubbing the tile grout in her bid. Had she estimated the labor hours more accurately, she likely would have increased the price and been on par with the other bids. Given the price I paid, I am satisfied with the service I received.

Needed some help digging under a sidewalk. The response time from the scheduler was great. The laborer was late, but he called in advance to let me know. Once he got there, he was polite, great at what he did and I couldn’t have been happier.

I needed a 6’ section of fence replace with an additional 6’ gate to the RV pad and man gate replaced from natural wear & tear. After meeting and explaining what I wanted & expected, within a couple days, Bill emailed me a his bid for the job with a breakdown on the material, labor after interviewing a couple of local handymen, ended up being a fair proposal. He did his prep work by digging the needed fence post hole and setting the post in concrete a few days before he was actually schedule to show up for the job. He showed up on time and worked non-stop throughout the day. Once the job was completed he also was willing to do a few little extras by repairing our ailing neighbor’s gate and secured a section of fence at no extra charge. He really cares about the work he does supported with his professional attitude.

Greg and his team were amazing. Hands down the best option for plumbing, water heater, etc. needs. Great price, best I could see. They also include a 2 year labor warranty which most other companies don't. I posted on Thumbtack at midnight, and he was the first to place a bid. By 2:00 the next day I had a new water heater fully functioning. What is more, the worker slightly nicked the door trim when putting in the new heater. Not only did he apologize over and over, he pulled out $25 cash of his own money to pay to fix it. Truly a great experience with High Point plumbing. Spread the word - this is the company to use!

DJ came to install a screen door for the back patio. From the get go, he sent me multiple options for doors with prices, and gave me a set price for labor. He bought the door for me and all the parts that were needed. He was able to squeeze me in last minute, and he had the door installed within a few hours. DJ is very affordable, professional, and I would highly recommend him!

Dan did exactly as we had discussed, and more. I had a few other items to be fixed, and he completed those at the same time, and for the same amount! Nice to see someone take pride in their work.

Our home is 40 years old. The lights worked great until we put a new ceiling fan in my bedroom. The fan worked, but not the light. The screws used were too small and it fell. Efrain came to install it and fix the wires. No matter the combination it didn't work. He said he thought it was in the other bedroom. I doubted it, but let him try. He found that the switch in the other bedroom had been wired incorrectly. He rewired it, and all three lights worked. He was very reasonable with his labor. Thank you efrain I will use you again.

Overall, Kumi Finau did a good job. I was satisfied with quality and price and have recommend him to two others. He's building his business in the US, so the market at times can still be new to him, including bids, supply of labor, etc. Make sure both parties are on the exact same page, and then pay attention to the detail and his methods for accomplishing the final product. Be clear on expectations, communicate regularly and I think you will be pleased with his work.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
